1 Top Pick Wednesday 21 March 9.00pm Sando Victoria ‘Sando’ Sandringham (Sasha Horler) is the charismatic loose cannon CEO, and public face of, beloved department store chain ‘Sando’s Warehouse’. Australia knows Sando as the larrikin ‘Package Deal Queen’, a born performer who for decades starred alongside her young family in their own furniture commercials. But things began to unravel for Sando the day of her daughter Susie’s wedding, when it is revealed that following a drunken night at a family weekend away, she became pregnant to Susie’s fiancé, Kevin (Firass Dirani), and was excommunicated from the family. Ten years later we catch up with Sando, freshly removed from her own company by her nemesis company CFO Tony (Rob Carlton), following one too many all-night benders. Her assets frozen and with nowhere else to go, Sando realises she must reconnect with her family if she’s to have any chance of rekindling the halcyon days. While granddaughter Rian (Sierra Lewis) is easily won over – as is son Eric (Dylan Hesp) for whom the parental flame was never extinguished - daughter Susie (Krew Boylan) has a much larger axe to grind. Even though she’s now happily married to dependable Gary (Uli Latukefu), Susie has never forgiven Sando and doesn’t intend to now that she’s back. Fearing another banishment, Sando fakes a stroke in order to buy a few crucial days to convalesce in the family’s pool house. Then, by blackmailing her ex-husband Don (Phil Lloyd) and Susie’s best friend and live-in life coach Nicky (Adele Vuko), Sando manages to further extend her stay.

For 30 years he has ruled the world of retail fashion – bringing the high street to the catwalk and the catwalk to the high street – but after a damaging public inquiry, his image is tarnished. To save his reputation, he decides to bounce back with a highly publicized and extravagant party celebrating his 60th birthday on the Greek island of Mykonos. A satire on the grotesque inequality of wealth in the fashion industry, the film sees McCreadie’s rise and fall through the eyes of his biographer, Nick (David Mitchell). • Masculinity in Comic Midlife Crisis in Michael Winterbottom's Trip Series
139 LUCIA KRÄMER The Imitation Competition: Masculinity in Comic Midlife Crisis in Michael Winterbottom's Trip Series "It's not about the destination, it's about the journey." (S1E5)1 1. Introduction Although the comedy programme examined in this article is simply, and somewhat self-deprecatingly, called The Trip (2010-), rather than 'The Journey' or some other title with more gravitas, the implications of the overarching metaphor are independent of genre. The geographical journey evokes the theme of the journey of life: its phases; the events, obstacles and detours on the way; the persons encountered during the journey, as well as its inevitable destination, i.e. death. This article examines how Michael Winterbottom's Trip series uses this metaphor to present its two middle-aged male protagonists – played by the British comedy stars Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon as fictionalised versions of themselves2 – in a way that combines the ridiculous with the absurd by evoking what Martin Esslin, in his seminal book on The Theatre of the Absurd, called a "sense of metaphysical anguish at the absurdity of the human condition," fuelled by the "senselessness of life" (1980, 23-24) and the elusiveness of a sense of self. In fact, the statement from the character of Steve Coogan in The Trip that precedes this article self-referentially encapsulates the life situation of its two main characters as well as the non-teleological structure of the programme.3 After a general introduction to the Trip series, the initial focus of the following analysis will be on the show's extensive use of intertextuality and the protagonists' obsession with performance.

  • Madness and the Manipulation of Power in Three Spanish American Plays on Juana La Loca
FALL 2008 81 Governing Juana: Madness and the Manipulation of Power in Three Spanish American Plays on Juana la Loca Kimberle S. López and Angela Marino Segura Playwrights not only in Spain, but in Spanish America as well, have long been intrigued by the tale of Juana of Castile. Like Spanish plays, Spanish American works suggest the injustice of the conspiracy to usurp her power and enclose her for half a century in Tordesillas, but also clearly portray Juana as swept away by love sickness, contributing to the popular understanding that her jealous passion drove her mad. Early representations of Queen Juana, such as that found in La locura de amor (Spain, 1855) by Manuel Tamayo y Baus, resurface in the works by contemporary Spanish American playwrights in the form of what we might call generically the “locura de amor” thesis. By the expression “locura de amor” we are not implying an uncritical stance on Juana’s madness; indeed, as Martha Halsey observes, Tamayo y Baus’s 1855 play itself examines the political intrigue in which her alleged insanity was used as a pretext to prevent her from exercising her legitimate authority (47-48). Although various characters including her doctor assert that allegations of her madness are slanderous, by the end of Locura de amor, Tamayo’s Juana chooses to embrace the label of “loca” and willingly abdicate her authority rather than admit that she has been deceived by her husband both in affairs of state and affairs of the heart. While many Spanish and Spanish American plays dramatize intricate schemes to depose Juana, most also fundamentally support the notion that she was indeed insanely jealous, as stage directions and dialogue generally direct the actress playing her to perform as a madwoman.
