  • Keyham News April 2017
KEYHAM NEWS A Load of Rubbish I wanted to say a huge thank you to all those who turned out to do the litter picking on Sunday 12 March. I was overwhelmed to see 16 people and we were able to do far more than originally anticipated on roads surrounding Keyham. In all we collected 30 bags of rubbish which were then placed next to the bins outside the Village Hall. What a service from Harborough District Council who collected the very next day! Litter Pickers about to do battle on 12 March (see opposite and page 6) Diary Dates There are simply too many heroes to thank April: individually but I would like to give a special 4th Film Night Double Bill in Village Hall 7:30pm mention to Steve Bailey who not only joined in 10th Parish Meeting in Village Hall 7:30pm on the day and stayed long into the afternoon, 24th WI Meeting Keyham Village Hall 7:30pm but also did a second weekend’s worth on his 27th Vestry & PCC Meetings Keyham Church 7:30pm own, collecting 28 bags and loads of other strange items. Church Services April: Lent, Holy Week and Easter Services: The intension is to run a second such event in 2nd Passion Sunday, 9am Holy Communion (Hungarton) June, just before Keyham Open Gardens (I am 9th Palm Sunday, 9am Holy Communion (Keyham) proposing the morning of Sunday 18 June?). A Holy Week: number of people thought it would be good to do Monday of Holy Week, 7pm Compline (Keyham) a social, so we will do just that; tea and cake at Tuesday of Holy Week, 7pm Compline (Hungarton) the Village Hall was mentioned! Wednesday of Holy Week, 7pm Compline (Skeffington) Maundy Thursday: In the meantime, I have been thinking of how we 7pm Holy Communion with (optional) foot washing (Billesdon) can keep the areas surrounding Keyham clean.

  • The Skeffingtons of Skeffington
SKEPPINGTON HAU,—EAST FRONT THE SKEFFINGTONS OF SKEFFINGTON INTRODUCTORY NARRATIVE BY S. H. SKILLINGTON APPENDIX BY G. F. FARNHAM, F.S.A. The Skeffingtons of Skeffington Introductory Narrative By S. H. Skillington The small Leicestershire village of Skeffington, in the hun dred of East Goscote, is situated near the main road from Leicester to Uppingham, ten miles from Leicester, in a direction slightly south of east, and nine miles north-west of Uppingham. The villages immediately round it are Billesdon, Tilton, Loddington, Tugby and Rolleston, and the remains of Laund priory are about four miles away to the north-west. As Professor Hamilton Thompson has more than once told us, the medieval history of an English village can only be derived from the extant legal and official documents relating to its manorial lords and other owners of land within its bounds. The researches of Mr. Farnham show that Skeffington presents no exception to this general rule; for nearly all that is known about it has been culled from the records of the family that bore its name and were for many centuries its principal residents. By means of the docu mentary abstracts which form the second and more instructive part of this paper, we are able to trace the close connection with the village of successive generations of Skeffingtons, from the reign of Henry II to a date that is comparatively recent. Before doing this, however, we must say what we can of the tenurial conditions which existed there during the two centuries or so that followed the Norman Conquest.

  • • in the Last Newsletter, It Was Clarified That the Highways Management Group Had Asked All Parish Councils to Express Any
Issue: November 2014 Welcome to the November edition of the Parish Clerks’ Highways newsletter. We will use this newsletter to provide you with updates on highways maintenance, reporting defects and the Customer Service Centre. IN THIS ISSUE: Next year’s grass cutting Winter preparedness Highway maintenance funding spend Highway forums Salt bin update News for your Parish Budget cuts in the Medium Term Useful contacts / Stay up to Financial Strategy (MTFS) date Next year’s grass cutting In the last newsletter, it was clarified that the Highways Management Group had asked all parish councils to express any interest that they may have in carrying out the urban grass cutting in their own area. This was on the basis that Leicestershire County Council was prepared to allocate to parish councils the same level of funding per cut that was provided to the outgoing Highway Works Alliance contractor (Lafarge Tarmac) for a minimum of five cuts per season. Any parish council that was interested in this offer was at liberty to consider funding as many extra cuts as it wanted to undertake locally, above what will become the standard level of service for Leicestershire. In reality, not as many parish councils have chosen to enter more extensive discussions on this opportunity as expected. The current situation regarding those parish councils that have indicated a desire to cut the grass, no desire to cut the grass and are still deliberating over the offer available is set out in the following table. If Parish Clerks believe that the information set out in that table is incorrect, please contact Debbi Payne via email at [email protected] by 30 November 2014.
