  • APPENDIX Lesson 1.: Introduction
APPENDIX Lesson 1.: Introduction The Academy Awards, informally known as The Oscars, are a set of awards given annually for excellence of cinematic achievements. The Oscar statuette is officially named the Academy Award of Merit and is one of nine types of Academy Awards. Organized and overseen by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS),http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Academy_Award - cite_note-1 the awards are given each year at a formal ceremony. The AMPAS was originally conceived by Metro-Goldwyn- Mayer studio executive Louis B. Mayer as a professional honorary organization to help improve the film industry’s image and help mediate labor disputes. The awards themselves were later initiated by the Academy as awards "of merit for distinctive achievement" in the industry. The awards were first given in 1929 at a ceremony created for the awards, at the Hotel Roosevelt in Hollywood. Over the years that the award has been given, the categories presented have changed; currently Oscars are given in more than a dozen categories, and include films of various types. As one of the most prominent award ceremonies in the world, the Academy Awards ceremony is televised live in more than 100 countries annually. It is also the oldest award ceremony in the media; its equivalents, the Grammy Awards (for music), the Emmy Awards (for television), and the Tony Awards (for theater), are modeled after the Academy Awards. The 85th Academy Awards were held on February 24, 2013 at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, California. Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Academy_Award Time of downloading: 10th January, 2013.

Sydney Film Festival - a gateway to the best in film Sydney Film Festival is Sydney and New South Wales' pre-eminent showcase for contemporary cinema from Australia and around the world. Established in 1954, Sydney Film Festival is a major cultural event on the city's social cultural calendar, one of the world's longest running film festivals and the only Australian film festival to present an international competition that is FIAPF* accredited. We have been extending our reach to audiences in regional centres with the Travelling Film Festival since 1974 with screenings and events in regional New South Wales, Queensland and the Northern Territory. Audience engagement The Sydney Film Festival plays an active role in connecting films and the film industry with audiences and provides a context for the discovery, exposure, marketing and promotion of emerging and established filmmakers both locally and internationally. Like many of our peer organisations funded under Screen Australia's Industry and Cultural Development Program, audience and industry development are at the core of our business. Biographical Note Lynn Hershman Leeson (b. 1941) is a performance artist and filmmaker who, in various media, has investigated the idea of selfhood and what establishes an individual as a sentient, gendered, unique person. Between the years of 1974 and 1978, Hershman Leeson spent much of her time performing as an alter ego, the character Roberta Breitmore. Much of the work--drawings, photographs, clothing, medical records, letters, etc.--Hershman Leeson produced during the Breitmore years related to the character's emotional and practical existences. Hershman Leeson seemed to be demonstrating that the two existences could and should not be easily separated--nor should the artist herself be easily separated from the character she created.
