Knights Family of the Month for May is Bob and Jean Cross. Jean is a teacher at St. Patrick Catholic elementary school and Bob was the art instructor at Royster and re- cently retired and helps out with art and other activities at St. Patrick Catholic School. Bob and Jean both volunteer at church as Jean is in the choir and also cantors and plays several musical instruments in support of the Liturgy while Bob has been an usher for many years and helps with special occasions at church. Bob donates time at the Bargain Store, he also has helped with the fish fry’s and other activities at the Hall.

Knight of the Month is Bob Huerter. Bob has been Grand Knight and had 4 years as District Deputy and was responsible for 5 councils getting their forms in and holding Degrees, He has held many positions in our Council over the years. Bob is responsible for renting and scheduling the hall and does many more chores when renters don’t comply with clean up inside and out. Bob works at the Bargain Store twice a month and helps when we have functions at the Hall. Bob is currently our oldest and most active member, a tremendous accomplishment. Thank You Bob!

St. Patrick Bargain Store Dinner for all the regular day workers was held this past Wednesday. Our Council puts on a dinner every year for the regular volunteers from the different churches. We have done this since 1993, when the hall was completed and Val and Clara Webb were the store managers. It was about this same time that Father Mike Maybrier separated the store from the church and had them become a non-profit corpora- tion with a Board of Directors. When health issues began to plaque Val and Clara, Sandy and Roy Beins took over management of the store. Now Julia Peters has taken over management and Roy has stayed on to do repair work. We greatly appreciate all the people who volunteer and they designate their hours to go to their different charities.

St. Patrick Knights of Columbus will award their scholarship to one of our Seniors at the 10:00am Mass on May 5th and after Mass will serve a brunch for our Seniors and their in the Parish Center. Congratulations Seniors! We will still have donuts, hot chocolate, and cof- fee on May 5th after Mass in St. Patrick Catholic Church Gym!

Family Picnic will be held at the Spieker Farm on June 2nd. We invite all Knights and their families to come out about 4:00pm if you wish to go fishing or just for fun and games and we will eat between 5:00pm and 5:30pm. We ask that you bring a covered dish and the council will provide the hamburgers, hotdogs and polish sausages and drink. We will set up a variety of games for young and old alike, or you can sit around and shoot the breeze.

Looking for a few good men to cut grass and weed eat around the hall. The heavy mowing will be taken care of by another Knight. This is just up around the building and around the trees. Contact John Busse, council di- rector at 431-8482 if you would volunteer just once during the summer if we can get enough volunteers. The ditch and around the shelter has partly been taken care of and the rest will be bailed.

On the lighter side: A Diplomat is someone who tells you to go to hell in such a way that you look forward to the trip. Take life with a grain of salt….and a slice of lime and a shot of tequila.

By Elaine Colvin

Sign-up is now open for the 2013 Mission to The Kitchen in Springfield, MO. The Kitchen, Inc. is an organization that began in 1983 by Franciscan Sr. Lorraine as a soup kitchen and has since expanded to provide an array of services to those in need, such as housing, food, counsel- ing, healthcare, education, youth services, clothing, advocacy, life skills and homelessness prevention. Our vol- unteer hours usually include a variety of work, such as small construction projects, organization, cleaning, serv- ing meals, etc.

We stay at the Franciscan retreat house in Republic, MO - Little Portions - where we will enjoy daily prayer and Mass together, as well as prepare our own meals and find some time to simply relax at the end of each day.

The schedule will include departing from Chanute the afternoon of Sunday, June 16th and returning early Friday evening, June 21. Youth who are currently in the 8th - 12th grades are encouraged to participate. If you are in- terested or need more information, please contact Elaine Colvin at (620) 431-0393.

St. Patrick Catholic Altar Society News! By Teri Kepley

Ladies of the parish, we appreciate your help with donating food, money for purchasing potatoes, or help with preparation or serving.

Hope to see you there! Volume 142 5 May 2013 Crumbs from the Master's Table A Brief Message from Matt Umbarger, Your Pastoral Associate Following Our Pope Into In his very first message to the faithful, our new Pope shared these striking words: "Now, we take up this journey: Bishop and People. This journey of the Church of Rome which presides in over all the Churches. A journey of fraternity, of love, of among us. Let us always pray for one another. Let us pray for the whole world, that there may be a great spirit of fraternity." Here Pope Francis uses a title for the Roman Church that is gleaned from one of the oldest documents in the Church's history, St. Ignatius of Antioch's letter to the Church in Rome, written sometime around 100 AD. In this letter, Ignatius calls the Roman Church, "the Church which is beloved and enlightened by the will of Him that wills all things which are according to the love of Jesus Christ our God, which also presides in the place of the region of the Romans, worthy of God, worthy of honour, worthy of the highest happiness, worthy of praise, worthy of obtaining her every desire, worthy of being deemed holy, and which presides over love, is named from Christ, and from the Father." The Church of Rome presides over love. The word we translate as love or charity is the Greek word agape. Let's meditate on this very fundamental word for a bit, so we can pursue our new Pope's vision for the Church. There are four different words for love in Greek, phile, or "," , "familial ," , (surely I don't have to translate that one), and agape. By contrasting agape with the other -words, you get a bit of an idea for what agape is and is not. Evidently, agape is not an appro- priate word to use for friendship, familial or sexual love. In some ways, this makes for a more general and inclusive kind of love. In today's culture, this seems more weak and anemic to us, I think. But listen to how agape is described in the old dictionaries: "brotherly love, charity; the love of God for man and of man for God." It is the word that is used to de- scribe "treating with affection, to caress, be fond of." Agape is the New Testament's favorite word for love. It shows up about 230 times. I put "love of God for man" in bold because I think that really defines how St. Ignatius viewed the role of the Church of Rome, and how Pope Francis views it, as well. Agape is tapping into the infinite love of God, manifested in His unceasing giving of His very Self, particularly in the sacrifice of Calvary. For us to practice agape means loving one an- other the way God us. The Church of Rome, ruled over by its bishop, whom we call Pope, presides over this festival of love. Pope Francis has invited us to journey with him into the free range and exquisite vistas of agape. Are we willing to follow? Chanute and Humboldt are more than 5000 miles from Rome, as the crow flies. But agape uses a completely differ- ent map. If we respond to our new Pope's invitation, I am sure that we will find that we have become suddenly closer to the Church in Rome, and along with Rome, the rest of the world.

What does agape look like in Chanute and Humboldt in 2013? Let me offer a few suggestions:  Make a decision to participate in the "Welcome Home Project." (You should have a pamphlet about this that you got last Fall. Please look through it and make a prayerful response to it. If you can't find it, ask the office for a new one).  Invite a friend to discover the fullness of the Christian faith in the Catholic Church through our new Spring RCIA. Offer to come with them!  Come talk to me about volunteering with PSR or youth ministry next year. There is always room for more.  Do you know someone whom you haven't seen in church for a while? Make a friendly invitation to come back.  Strive to spend a bit more time with your family.  Start evening devotions with your family each night. This requires little more than reading a passage of Scripture together and saying a family prayer. Start small, but do make a start!  Do everything possible to eat dinner together as a family.  Share your faith in friendly but assertive ways with your friends and at work. Don't clam up. Speak up!  Practice the spiritual and corporal works of mercy.  Read Matthew 25, and make it your ambition to be a sheep, and not a goat.  Volunteer time as a Big Brother or Big Sister. They have a huge waiting list. There are kids in our community that are languishing in despair, just because they need someone to reach out and spend a little time with them.  Visit a nursing home.  Choose not to perpetuate gossip.  Accept wrongs and injustices against you or your loved ones gracefully, and commit your enemies to God's love in prayer.  Pray for your community, and pray, and pray some more.  Suffer whatever is making you miserable today with dignity, and offer it up for the good of your community.

These are just a few of the innumerable ways that you can imitate God and follow our Pope in self-giving agape. Volume 142 6 May 2013
