    Lund University FKVK02 Department of Political Science Spring 2020 Peace and Conflict Studies Supervisor: Fredrika Larsson The Battle of Eurovision A case study of Russia and Ukraine’s use of the Eurovision Song Contest as a cultural battlefield Character count: 59 832 Julia Orinius Welander Abstract This study aims to explore and analyze how Eurovision Song Contest functioned as an alternative – cultural – battlefield in the Russian-Ukrainian conflict over Crimea. With the use of soft power politics in warfare as the root of interest, this study uses the theories of cultural diplomacy and visual international relations to explore how images may be central to modern-day warfare and conflicts as the perception of. The study has a theory-building approach and aims to build on the concept of cultural diplomacy in order to explain how the images sent out by states can be politized and used to conduct cultural warfare. To explore how Russia and Ukraine used Eurovision Song Contest as a cultural battlefield this study uses the methodological framework of a qualitative case study with the empirical data being Ukraine’s and Russia’s Eurovision Song Contest performances in 2016 and 2017, respectively, which was analyzed using Roland Barthes’ method of image analysis. The main finding of the study was that both Russia and Ukraine used ESC as a cultural battlefield on which they used their performances to alter the perception of themselves and the other by instrumentalizing culture for political gain. The author explores the topic not only from the academic perspective but also from the performing angle, as Sonevytsky is a practicing multidisciplinary professional with extensive professional training and significant performing experience. Sonevytsky’s unique capacity to see connections between music and Ukrainian politics in the context of history already found its reflection in her earlier projects. “The Chornobyl Songs Project: Living Culture from a Lost World” was released in 2015 by Smithsonian Folkways and elaborated on the effects of the Chornobyl nuclear disaster and the revival of rural musical repertoires. Focusing on such key terms as “sovereignty” and “Wildness,” Sonevytsky creates a unique blend of fields combining ethnomusicology, politics, feminist studies, and history. In the preface, Sonevytsky mentions that the key term “sovereignty” emerged from the acuteness of the political instability in Ukraine in the years when she was conducting her research. The second key- term “Wildness” was in her original focus when she studied the reflections of civilization and barbarism expressed in the sonic products of Crimean Tatars and Hutsuls.

For more information, please contact us at [email protected] or visit our website at www.contemporarysee.org Introduction: Gender and Geopolitics in the Eurovision Song Contest Catherine Baker* Introduction From the vantage point of the early 1990s, when the end of the Cold War not only inspired the discourses of many Eurovision performances but created opportunities for the map of Eurovision participation itself to significantly expand in a short space of time, neither the scale of the contemporary Eurovision Song Contest (ESC) nor the extent to which a field of “Eurovision research” has developed in cultural studies and its related disciplines would have been recognisable. In 1993, when former Warsaw Pact states began to participate in Eurovision for the first time and Yugoslav successor states started to compete in their own right, the contest remained a one-night-per- year theatrical presentation staged in venues that accommodated, at most, a couple of thousand spectators and with points awarded by expert juries from each participating country.     EuroMaidan - represented by Mustafa Nayem, Ruslana Lyzhychko, Yelyzaveta Schepetylnykova and Tetiana Chornovol Nominated by Jacek Saryusz-Wolski and 52 other MEPs Euromaidan were prompted in November 21 by the government decision to refuse the signature of the Association Agreement with the EU. Protests soon spread to over 40 cities and towns around Ukraine, where it became a true expression of pro-democratic will of the Ukrainian people who rejected the dramatic slide into semi-authoritarian regime in recent years. Ukrainians stood for common European values - dignity, liberty, equality and the rule of law. For thousands protesting under European and Ukrainian flags, these values were embodied in the fullest by the European Union and the perspective of the Association Agreement. Peaceful protesters in Kiev were to pay the highest prize when the government decided to disperse them violently, eventually ordering sniper shooting. The prize is to be awarded to four representatives of Euromaidan civil society grassroots. Mustafa Nayem, an independent blogger and Hromadske TV journalist, was the first to urge Ukrainians to gather on Independence Square and was instrumental in making their voice heard. Eurovision Song Contest winning artist Ruslana Lyzhychko acted as leader of the Euromaidan Council, the governing body of the protest movement, and provided support and inspiration to the crowds gathered in Kiev. From January 2014, she started meeting key EU and US politicians with the aim of raising awareness of the protest and asking support for Ukraine. Yelyzaveta Schepetylnykova was a student representative in the Euromaidan Council Presidium. She embodies the struggle of Ukrainian students, who were on the frontline of the effort to uphold the common European values - dignity, liberty, equality and the rule of law in Ukraine.

Bien que 1968 soit le troisième concours Eurovision organisé par la B.B. C., c’est en fait la première fois qu’elle l’accueille après une victoire. Comme en 1960 et 1962 c’est Catherine Boyle qui anime la soirée. Le Royal Albert Hall est aménagé pour la circonstance et c’est à travers une immense réplique du logo étoilé de l’Eurovision que les 17 concurrents pénètrent sur scène. Une caméra placée en coulisses permet de suivre les quelques secondes qui précèdent leur entrée dans la salle. Mais la grande invitée de la soirée est la couleur. Détail curieux, si le spectacle est relayé dans tous les pays d’Europe en couleurs, les britanniques devront se contenter du noir et blanc et attendre la rediffusion du lendemain pour apprécier le concours en polychromie. On s’était bien aperçu dans les dernières années que les tenues des participants se faisaient plus brillantes, les jupes des chanteuses plus courtes, mais ce progrès technique permet de découvrir des roses, des bleus et des jaunes que l’on aurait eu du mal à imaginer. Aurait-on autant apprécié les costumes médiévaux de l’ensemble yougoslave Dubrovacki Trubadori ( recomposé en un duo et trois choristes, le règlement n’autorisant que deux interprètes ) sans la couleur ? Parmi les 65 chansons présentées au comité de sélection français, c’est “La source” qui a été retenue. Le titre, dont le texte est signé Guy Bonnet et Henri Djian et la musique Daniel Faure, avait déjà été présenté en 1967 en sélection française.
