Chair of Governors

St. Martin’s School, Fangfoss

from Revd. Jan Hardy

St. Martin’s School Fangfoss is a Church of England Aided Primary School for children aged 3-11. It is also a community school serving the villages of Fangfoss, Spittal, Bolton, and .

Central to the ethos of the school is its foundation and links with the church. The incumbent Revd. Jan Hardy leads an Act of Collective Worship once every two weeks. She also helps deliver Religious Education when there is a topic which is particularly apt. Walking around the school one is able to see clear and visible links with the school, parish church and the Diocese of York. Last year, 2017, the school was visited by the Bishop of Selby and the Archbishop of York.

The children attend St. Martin’s Church at the end of each term for a service in Church. As St. Martin’s Church is a relatively small rural church two services are held, one for Early Years Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1, and one for Key Stage 2. St. Martin’s Day is celebrated on 11th November each year with the emphasis on the life of St. Martin and the links between church and school.

Children in Year 6 are offered the opportunity to be Confirmed if they wish and classes are held in school during the summer term led by Revd. Jan. A Christmas Fair is held at the beginning of December in school; this is a joint venture between the Friends of St. Martin’s school and St. Martin’s Church. Messy Church has also been held on the third Sunday of the month in St. Martin’s School, but is currently on hold pending a relaunch in September. Messy Church aims to further increase the links between church and school.

The School was judged to be Outstanding in its last SIAMS Inspection and links between the school and church were particularly recognised. One of the recommendations was to have a dedicated notice board in church, which has been acted upon.

The congregation of St. Martin’s Church prays regularly for the school and is involved in the appointment of Foundation Governors, which is something it takes very seriously. We consider it a great privilege to enjoy the positive links we currently have with the school and would hope that the person appointed would seek to build further on the existing links. The positivity regarding the Christian ethos of the school and the church’s links with the school is equally valued by parents and the wider community. We will be particularly remembering the school in our prayers in this time of change and look forward to working with the new Headteacher, in ways that promote the Christian ethos of a very lovely and special Church of England, Aided Primary School.

About our school

Classes

The school has been on its present site since 1976 and pupils are organised into four classes:

• Class 1 – Early Years Foundation Stage pupils Our Foundation Stage Unit caters for children from the age of three and follows the Foundation Stage curriculum. FS1 is affectionately known as “Red Tops” to the school and Reception as “Blue Tops” on account of the colour of the uniform. The published admission number in Reception is 16. • Class 2 - Key Stage 1 pupils • Class 3 - Lower Key Stage 2 pupils (Years 3 and 4) • Class 4 - Upper Key Stage 2 pupils (Years 5 and 6)

Each class is staffed by a teacher and teaching assistant or nursery nurse in the case of Class 1, with additional teaching assistants working on a one-to-one basis in some classes with pupils with SEND.

Breakfast and after school care

The school has a breakfast club and after school care that are staffed by play workers and provide valuable care both before and after school for children.

Community links

The school has strong links with St. Martins Church, and also with “Open the Bible”, a Christian organisation who visit school to tell Bible stories through involving Class 4 pupils in drama and puppet shows presented to the rest of the school. The school also has strong links with Jubilee Park, a park run by a volunteer committee in the village, which provides a wonderful play space for local children to explore and learn in. The school supports fundraising for the running of the park.

Christian values

Our values and beliefs are embedded into our way of life at St Martins; we have a prayer barn that all children are encouraged to use to take time out to reflect and pray, as well as a prayer corner in each classroom and a prayer tree in the library. We have strong links with the local church and diocese. Each half term our collective and class acts of worship explore a particular value such as justice or perseverance. Two of our four key school values are responsibility and compassion and we collect all year round for a local foodbank, as well as running events to support other charities.

Our School Prayer

Christ has no body now on earth but yours, No hands but yours, no feet but yours, Yours are the eyes through which Christ's compassion is to look out to the earth, Yours are the feet by which He is to go about doing good, And yours are the hands by which He is to bless us now. The Prayer Barn. About our village

Fangfoss is a welcoming, attractive village nestling at the foot of the Yorkshire Wolds. Although essentially a rural community, it is just twenty minutes from York and under an hour from Leeds, the Yorkshire coast and Moors, and the Dales.

The expanding market town of Pocklington, which offers local amenities such as a supermarket and sports centre, as well as shops and restaurants is less than five miles to the east, whilst the smaller, but fast growing village of Stamford Bridge is a similar distance to the west. St Martins School attracts children from the nearby villages as well as from the surrounding towns and villages.

For such a small village Fangfoss is full of surprises! Known as a centre of practical arts it boasts a world-renowned Rocking Horse Shop, Gerry and Lyn’s long established Fangfoss Pottery, well known furniture makers Harry Postill and Gary Longley, as well as a number of painters and sculptors. All this creativity comes together at the annual Fangfest during the first weekend of September, when thousands of people flock to see a wide range of demonstrations and exhibitions. Since 1999 it has grown to include all the village businesses, the church, Jubilee Park, the school and various local charities, and has become a major fundraiser for everyone involved. This creativity can also be seen at Jubilee Park, an innovative community green space designed, created - and paid for - by the people from the village.

A vibrant village community should have a vibrant village pub and The Carpenters Arms is just that!

Situated just off the village green, St Martins Church is closely connected to the school with both regular services held for the school and school visits from the incumbent, as well from the Bishop of Selby and the Archbishop of York.

Put together you have a friendly village community that looks forward to welcoming the new Headteacher and would offer its full support in continuing to develop a school with the highest standards! FOSS – Friends of St Martins School

We are very lucky that we have a proactive and hardworking PTA, known as “FOSS”. They arrange many activities throughout the year, their purpose being:

• to raise funds to provide extra resources for the school • to develop effective relationships between the staff, parents and others associated with the school.

They do this through arranging many events across the school year and organising joint events with the church and community. Regular events include movie nights for pupils, a Christmas fair with St Martin’s Church, bag packing at a local Sainsbury’s, and coordinating car parking and refreshments for the annual Fangfest. A particular highlight last year was the ball held in conjunction with Langlands Garden Centre. There is also a FOSS 100 club, which both families and staff can join.

Recent purchases funded by FOSS include:

• an outdoor classroom • new trim trail equipment • help with school trips and theatre visits • new Chromebook laptop computers • replacement and additional books for the reading scheme. All parents are encouraged to join FOSS and they offer a lot of practical support to new parents including coordinating the purchase of uniform. They also have their own section on the school website to keep parents updated.

Enjoying the new outdoor classroom.
