UT ARLINGTON BASEBALL 2017 UT ARLINGTON RETIRED NUMBERS Butch McBroom 30 February 5, 2000 The first number retired by the UT Arlington baseball program was the No. 30 belonging to long-time head coach Marvin “Butch” McBroom. McBroom was associated with The University of Texas at Arlington’s baseball team longer than anyone in the history of the program. The team’s head coach from 1974-1999, McBroom won two Southland Conference championships and took his team to the NCAA Regional in 1990 and 1992. McBroom roamed the Mavericks dugout for 26 of his 33 year coaching career, winning 758 games. Among the honors McBroom received during his distinguished career were NCAA South Central Region Coach of the Year in 1990 and four SLC Coach of the Year awards.

He posted 14 consecutive 30-plus win seasons (1980-1993) and helped produce 65 players who moved on to the professional ranks, 48 who became coaches and 46 who earned All-SLC honors in a UT Arlington uniform. Over the course of his collegiate coaching career, which also included two years at Union (Tenn.) University, McBroom won 806 games. McBroom also spent five years coaching in the high school ranks. The former Baylor graduate standout catcher was inducted into the UT Arlington Athletic Hall of Honor on Sept. 25, 2004. Clay Gould 8 February 17, 2002 Clay Gould’s jersey No. 8 joined the number of his former coach, Butch McBroom, on the outfield wall at Allan Saxe Stadium (now Clay Gould Ballpark) on Feb. 17, 2002. A former Mavericks player and head coach, Gould won championships in both capacities. As a player, Gould was the Southland Conference Player of the Year in 1993 and was nominated for USA Baseball’s Golden Spikes Award, presented yearly to the nation’s most outstanding player. He led the Mavericks to NCAA Regional appearances as a player in 1990 and 1992.

Gould was an assistant coach at UT Arlington from 1997-1999, before being named the school’s fourth head coach in 2000. His 2001 Mavericks won the Southland Conference Tournament and advanced to the NCAA Regional, making Gould the only member of all three of UT Arlington’s regional teams. He was named Co-Coach of the Year in the South Central Region by the American Baseball Coaches Association in 2001.

Gould passed away on June 23, 2001, after a courageous battle with cancer, but his memory lives on in the hearts of all who knew him. Trey Hillman 1 May 8, 2010 Trey Hillman’s jersey No. 1 became the third in UT Arlington history to get retired at Clay Gould Ballpark on May 8, 2010. Hillman is the only three-time All-South- land Conference baseball selection in UTA history. His .442 batting average in 1985 led the SLC and remains a single-season record at UTA. Hillman was named the 1985 SLC Player of the Year before signing a free agent contract with the in 1986.

After a brief playing career, Hillman blazed his new path as a in 1990 at 27 years old, winning the Carolina League championship in his first season. He was named the 1996 Florida State League Manager of the Year and the 2000 Manager of the Year. In 2006, Hillman won the title and Konami Cup as the manager of the Nippon Ham Fighters. Hillman realized the dream of becoming a manager in 2008 when he took the reins of the . Prior to his current position of bench coach for the , Hillman served as the bench coach for the .
