Southern Exposure Seed Exchange Catalog and Garden Guide Dear Gardeners and Farmers, Welcome to our 2005 catalog! Thank you all for making our 21st year our best ever. In spite of record rainfall and four hurricanes we grew some great seed—a testament to the vitality and adaptability of our heirloom and open-pollinated varieties. We are introducing several exciting new varieties this year, along with a few old favorites that have been unavailable for some time. We're happy to have a much better supply of Kaskaskia Garlic (in 2004 it sold out in June!) as well as more perenni- al onions. For you organic market gardeners we now offer many more bulk packs of your favorite organic seeds. Our cooperative will miss Cricket Rakita, our hard-working manager for the past five years. Cricket now coordinates the Saving Our Seed project (www.savingourseed.org), which works on seed saving with farmers, gardeners, and extension agents to increase the availability of certified organic seed in the southeast. Southern Exposure has co-hosted several exciting and pro- ductive seed-saving workshops with them. We hope you will join us in supporting a cooperative and self-reliant seed movement. What began in 1982 as one man’s love affair with heirlooms continues as a reliable seed source and resource to gardeners, offering over 500 heirloom and open-pollinated varieties, detailed growing guides, seed saving resources, and supplies. For those of you new to us we invite you to explore our listings and try some varieties that are new to you. We want to take this opportunity to thank Dr Jeff McCormack and the many others of you who have nurtured and supported us with your advice, encouragement, and special varieties. And a special thank you to our returning customers. We would not be here without you. Starting in 2007 our catalog will be free to all gardeners. It was acquired from the Amish near Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Amish Paste Bright red 8-12 ounce fruits vary in shape from oxheart to Indeterminate 74 rounded plum and is the best for sauces and canning. Its deep red fruits are large with "real tomato" flavor. Not overly acidic. Big, succulent fruit can reach 8–12 ounces with a complex blend of flavors. The vivid, rosy-blushed fruit has iridescent, Berkeley Tie Dye - Pink green skin with sunny yellow streaks and an interior that’s a Indeterminate 70 fascinating kaleidoscope of green with trails of red and yellow. Heirloom too rarely encountered, this delectable variety fully merits a place in the garden and on the dinner table. Yields Black Cherry plentiful clusters of perfectly round 1" true cherry tomatoes Indeterminate 65 that are deep red with a blackish hue. The flavor is complex, rich, juicy and sweet. Medium-sized, very dark maroon beefsteak, with wonderfully rich flavor, originated in Crimea, a peninsula in Black Krim the Black Sea.
