Lakshman of Srinivasa- puram, a colony located near the sea off Foreshore Estate executed this work of art on the wall of his house. And he had a subtle but strong message in it - digitisation and flex banners has virtually wiped out the vocation of artists like him who painted signboards, cloth banners and on walls. But Lakshman, who has been in this line for some 25 years says he has not given up. If you need his services, call 8939651280. 2 MYLAPORE TIMES Jan 4 - 10, 2020 MYLAPORE EVENTS ONLINE. • Banis / बानी and Schools Are Aplenty
PAPER: 3 Detail Study Of Bharatanatyam, Devadasis-Natuvnar, Nritya And Nritta, Different Bani-s, Present Status, Institutions, Artists Module 18 Institutions Of Bharatanatyam Present day Bharatanatyam banis / बानी and schools are aplenty. There are many branches of main banis and some as far as in New Jersey in USA or Ukhrul in Manipur! Since Bharatanatyam has spread far and wide, each dancer is adding something to what was learnt and trying to extend its boundaries and body. Many dancers are also teachers today, so they are adding new poses or postures and calling it sub banis or schools. Schools today mean individual teaching establishments, not a generic bani or style. It means in one city itself, say small town like Mysore or Baroda, there could be ten schools of Bharatanatyam. Each teaching same dance, differently. In that, there is no standardization. In one area of a big metro like Chennai or Bangalore, Mylapore or Malleswaram, there are over a dozen teachers teaching from same bani differently. This is not to break away as much as what one learnt from a guru and how much. Schools of Bharatanatyam today within one city can be in hundreds, especially nerve centre of dance like Chennai. The Dhananjayans, Chandrasekhars, Ambika Buch, Savitri Jagannath Rao, M.V. 1 Narasimhachari and Vasanthalakshmi, Sheejith Krishna, P.T. Narendran, Shijith Nambiar and Parvathy Menon teach the Kalakshetra style. J. Suryanarayanamurthy, a disciple of the Dhananjayans, is a popular teacher. Sreelatha Vinod, Tulsi Badrinath, Radhika Surajit, Shobana Bhalchandra are ardent disciples of the Dhananjayans and faithfully follow their teachers’ teachings.

PAPER: 3 Detail Study Of Bharatanatyam, Devadasis-Natuvnar, Nritya And Nritta, Different Bani-s, Present Status, Institutions, Artists Module 27 Modern Development And Future Trends In Bharatanatyam Present day Bharatanatyam is progressing to a new avatar while partaking of old structure and substance. Each new person, educated, city-bred, global, is trying to infuse new energy and light into this form. Many have succeeded tremendously (as in the case of Malavika Sarukkai) in giving it a new dimension, while others (Alarmel Valli) have retained its classical roots and gone back in time to bring back gems of bygone era (Sangam poetry, etc.). Some have used group works (Leela Samson) to create anew and some have gone beyond the solo structure and infused it with group dynamics (B. Bhanumati). What we see are not new banis but new bodies and groups being created. Bani / बानी is now a reference point. Only few retain and guard it without alloying or diluting. While each one comes with certain historical reference point called bani/training, they have all tried to create anew. Partly due to demands of each season and what new work each capable star dancer can present and partly because of sponsors clamoring for new wine in old bottles or vice versa! But Bharatanatyam remains quintessentially the same. Its structure can be marginally changed but form is same. Bent at knee 1 legs are bent at knee legs because that’s what the style’s structure demands (called araimandi / अरैमंडी). One may make the fan of costume longer so one has to sit less! But the basic position still remains that else it can’t qualify to be called Bharatanatyam.
