The benchmark club of the Hyundai a-League against the competition's newest comer. since inception, Melbourne Victory has set the standard in the Hyundai a-League on and off the field and has established a remarkable history and folklore in this competition. one for all to aspire to. on the other hand, our club, as you all have come to learn, is not a club that sits idly by and over the course of the past 18 months has been very focussed on laying the foundations to create its own impressive history. Last season we lay witness to some truly outstanding moments on the pitch in our matches against the Victory, including three sublime goals from shinji ono to secure important wins on our way to the Premiers Plate. Today however this game is about more than just three points. Today in Wanderland we are paid visit from a team that carries the history of our nation, the socceroos. a team whose history is steeped in Western sydney traditions. over half of all socceroos have come from the Western sydney region including many who are in the team today. They come to witness what we believe is truly unique in australian sport. something that many would try to replicate but only those inside the stadium will truly understand. This match is not just about the two teams on the field, it shares with it a sense of place and time that will be etched into history books just like the performances of the socceroos and those of our forebears. Your support, singing and chanting is creating a tradition and a spectacle that is the envy of many but cherished by many more. However, today is not just about the football and comes with a serious message. one of the traditions we have already set in stone is a simple message, that we stand up for our own and stand for what we believe in. It is with this mantra that I proudly pledge our support to the White Ribbon campaign and swear an oath for this important and righteous cause. The White Ribbon Campaign is the largest global male-led movement to stop violence against women. It engages and enables men and boys to lead this social change. In australia, White Ribbon is an organisation Intimate partner VIOLENCE that works to prevent violence by changing attitudes and behaviours. The prevention work is driven through IS THE MOST COMMON social marketing, the ambassador Program, that includes TYPE OF VIOLENCE AGAINST our own ante Covic and initiatives with communities, WOMEN WORLDWIDE. schools, universities, sporting codes and workplaces. Today I urge all men in attendance to join with me and swear your oath never to commit, excuse or remain silent about violence against women. TODAY'S OPPONENTS MELBOURNE VICTORY ARE SECOND ON 19. GUARDIAN FUNERALS WANDERCREW MEMBER OF THE WEEK: TOM DANIELS Hello, my name is Tom daniels and I sing for Wanderers. I have three passions in my life; my family, teaching and football. The NRMa Insurance Western sydney Wanderers has enabled me to combine all three passions into one amazing package. I have been a school ambassador for Western sydney Wanderers since day one and this year I was given the Proudly BROUGHT TO YOU BY opportunity to volunteer on match days. My job as a Wandercrew member is Hub Leader of Pre-game Promotions. ON THIS DAY australia qualified for only its second FIFa World Cup Finals campaign, and first for 32 years, with a penalty shoot-out victory against Uruguay in 2005. In front of 82,698 spectators Western sydney had a large representation with five socceroos that day coming from the region. Tony Popovic started the match but came off injured early for Harry Kewell who played a major part in australia’s goal. Mark schwarzer, OFFICIAL Brett Emerton and Tim Cahill also started with MERCH schwarzer the hero saving two spot kicks. NOW ON ROUND WRAP-UP see how our teams faired since you've been here. I’M PLAYING FOR A ANTE COVIC CLUB NOW THat story by Josh Bennett @josh_n_bennett IS GOING TO BE A HUGE CLUB IN It is often said goalkeepers are like a fine wine, they get better with age. Wanderers shot stopper ante Covic is no exception. AUSTRALIA" Having turned 38 in June, Covic remains one of the premier goalkeepers in the Hyundai a-League. he longevity of the Wanderers custodian is quite remarkable given his professional career started in 1997 with the Marconi Tstallions in the National soccer League and while most keepers form can deteriorate late in their careers, after more than 16 years as a professional Covic remains as consistent as ever. “I’m enjoying the Wanderers, I’ve still got a huge passion for the game and I love playing it,” he told the Wanderer. “I’ve always had that competitive side of me where I go out wanting to win every game and I always want to achieve something. “I have looked after myself over the last couple of years, I want to keep playing as long as possible and the only way to keep doing that is keeping that passion for the game.” Expected to be the whipping boys of the competition the Wanderers proved the pundits wrong as they went on to win the Premiership with much of that down to the form of Covic.
