Women’s Basketball Inks Six to National Letters of Intent

OMAHA, Neb. – Head coach Jim Flanery of the Creighton women’s baskeball team has announced the signing of six future Bluejay student-athletes to National Letters of Intent. The class of six is the largest signing class for Creighton’s eighth-year head coach.

Nebraska products McKenzie Fujan (Wahoo Neumann), Alyssa Kamphaus (Seward) and Sarah Nelson (Omaha Westside) are joined by a pair of Iowa preps, Carli Tritz (Sioux City Heelan) and Riley Norman (Des Moines Roosevelt) and Jordan Garrison of Osceola, Mo.

McKenzie Fujan, 5-11, G, Wahoo, Neb. (Bishop Neumann) Fujan, who was recruited by several Big 12 and MVC schools, chose to stay close to home with the Bluejays. The guard has started on varsity since her freshman season and averaged 13.5 points, 3.1 assists and 2.5 steals per game, while draining 47 percent of her three-point field goals as a junior when she was named the honorary captain of the Omaha World-Herald’s Class C first-team. A gifted athlete, Fujan is a three-time state champion in the 300-meter low hurdles and also plays volleyball at Neumann.

Alyssa Kamphaus, 6-4, C, Seward, Neb. (Seward) Kamphaus made good on her verbal commitment which she made to the program prior to her junior season. The dominant center has ranked among state leaders in scoring and rebounding the past two seasons, earning first-team all-state honors as a junior. As a soph- omore she averaged 13.3 points and 8.0 rebounds per game, followed by a 12.8 scoring average as a junior in which she guided her team to a perfect 25-0 record and Class B state title.

Sarah Nelson, 6-1, F, Omaha, Neb. (Westside) The younger sister of current Bluejay junior center Kellie Nelson, Sarah hopes to make her own mark on the court at Creighton. Nelson earned first-team all-class all-state honors as a junior, averaging 17.6 points and 9.8 rebounds per game. The Nelson sisters will play together for one season in college, as they did in high school when the pair helped Westside to the state championship game in 2007. The younger Nelson is an athletic forward who has also earned first-team all-state honors playing soccer.

Carli Tritz, 5-10, G, Sioux City, Iowa (Bishop Heelan) Named the Omaha World-Herald’s Western Iowa Female Athlete of the Year in 2009, Tritz turned down numerous Division I offers to join the Jays. As a junior she led the team with 18.9 points, 5.3 steals and 4.6 assists per game, ranking second in the state in steals and fifth in scoring. As a sophomore she averaged 14.2 points and led the team with 4.3 assists and 3.8 steals per game. The first- team all-state guard also plays soccer and volleyball at Heelan.

Riley Norman, 6-1, F, Des Moines, Iowa (Roosevelt) Norman ranked among Class 4A leaders with a team-best 16.7 points per game, while also leading the team with 7.1 rebounds per game and in assists and steals as a junior. The second-team all-state honoree also topped the team in assists and steals as a sophomore, when she averaged 12.3 points per game.

Jordan Garrison, 5-5, G, Osceola, Mo. (Osceola) Garrison has earned first-team all-state honors as both a sophomore and a junior at Osceola High School. The guard has helped her teams to district and sectional championships in each of those two seasons as well. The long-range shooter led her 27-4 team with 22.8 points, 4.0 steals and 3.6 assists per game as a junior, draining 89 three-point field goals in 30 games.

Creighton, which finished 22-12 in 2008-09, opens its 2009-10 season as the preseason Missouri Valley Conference favorites this Friday. The Bluejays open the brand new on-campus Wayne and Eileen Ryan Athletic Center and D.J. Sokol Arena by playing host Arkansas State at 8:35 p.m.
