Sean Connery, for example, the first actor who played James Bond in the 1960s, was born in Edinburgh. Gerard Butler and James McAvoy are both from Glasgow. Butler was the main actor in the American action film “300” and McAvoy was the star of the films “The Last King of Scotland” and “Atonement”. The young actress that played Cho Chang in the Harry Potter films, Katie Lie Leung, was also born in Glasgow. A lot of young actors, like Rose Leslie, Emun Elliot, Richard Madden and Kate Dickie, have become famous on shows like “Game of Thrones”, “The Paradise”, “Dr. Who” or “Downton Abbey”. And of course there are many famous Scottish sportsmen and -women. The tennis player Andy Murray is from Glasgow. In 2012 he won the US Open and in 2013 he won Wimbledon. He is one of the top ten players in the world. Sir Alex Ferguson, coach of Manchester United F.C. for 17 years, is world famous too. Although he was born in Belfast in Northern Ireland, Kelvin taught physics in Scotland. At 22 he was already a professor at the University of Glasgow. Alexander Fleming was born in Darvel, a small town in the south-west of Scotland, and in 1945 he won the Nobel prize for discovering the antibiotic Penicillin. His invention has saved millions of lives. The first telephone was also invented by a Scotsman: Alexander Graham Bell, who was born in Alle Rechte vorbehalten. Edinburgh in 1847. The reason for Bell’s interest in hearing and speech was his family. Both his mother and his wife could not hear and Bell’s grandfather, father and brother had already done research on these topics. Puffins are sea birds that have black backs, white bellies and an orange beak. They spend the winter at sea but in the spring they make nests on the ground or on cliffs where they lay eggs. The Scottish wildcat is the only wild cat in Great Britain. It likes areas with small mountains, forests and moors and mostly lives alone. There aren’t many wildcats anymore. There are lots of grey seals at the Scottish coast. A male seal is about 3 meters long, weighs up to 300 kg and can eat about 5 kg of fish in one day. English G Lighthouse Band 3 LH-3-71 Name: Klasse: Datum: Scottish clans and tartans What is a clan? It’s a family, but also much more. Scottish clans like the MacDonalds, MacLeods, MacLarens, Murrays, Grants or Lennoxes have long family histories. They mostly live in the Highlands or on islands. The name of a clan is based on the name of its first chief. The chief of a clan represents the whole clan, and is called “The MacLeod” or “The MacGregor”. Women can be clan chiefs too! Each clan has its own tartan style, which can be seen on the men’s kilts. Tartans can have many different colours and they are often made of wool. The Royal Family has its own tartan, the Balmoral. Visitors are told that this is the seat of the “Grey Lady”, the ghost of Glamis castle. Stirling Castle stands on Castle Hill close to the city of Stirling. It is one of Scotland’s biggest castles and has cliffs on three sides. Mary, Queen of Scots lived here as a child. At the foot of the hill there is a parade ground on which open air concerts can take place. Edinburgh, too, has its own castle. It stands on Castle Rock in the old part of the city and is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Scotland. Burns Night takes place each year on the 25th of January, the birthday of Scotland’s national poet Robert Burns. In the evening many people in Scotland have a special meal with their family and friends. A typical meal on this night starts with a plate of Scottish haggis. Then they read some of Burns’ poems. St. Andrew’s Day is celebrated on the 30th of November. It is the day of Saint Andrew and the official national day of Scotland. On this holiday, everything Scottish is celebrated – food, dance, music, fashion and literature. Hogmanay is celebrated on the evening of the 31st of December and ends at midnight, the New Year. The name of the festival is Scottish and means “the last day of the year”. People eat little cakes called “black buns” and bring their neighbours small presents (whiskey, coal, salt or shortbread). This tradition is called “first-footing”. If you are the first visitor to arrive with presents, you will have good luck in the new year. CASTLE STUDIES: RECENT PUBLICATIONS – 29 (2016) By Dr Gillian Scott with the assistance of Dr John R. Kenyon Introduction Hello and welcome to the latest edition of the CSG annual bibliography, this year containing over 150 references to keep us all busy. I must apologise for the delay in getting the bibliography to members. This volume covers publications up to mid- August of this year and is for the most part written as if to be published last year. Next year’s bibliography (No.30 2017) is already up and running. I seem to have come across several papers this year that could be viewed as on the periphery of our area of interest. For example the papers in the latest Ulster Journal of Archaeology on the forts of the Nine Years War, the various papers in the special edition of Architectural Heritage and Eric Johnson’s paper on moated sites in Medieval Archaeology. I have listed most of these even if inclusion stretches the definition of ‘Castle’ somewhat. It’s a hard thing to define anyway and I’m sure most of you will be interested in these papers. I apologise if you find my decisions regarding inclusion and non-inclusion a bit haphazard, particularly when it comes to the 17th century and so-called ‘Palace’ and ‘Fort’ sites. If these are your particular area of interest you might think that I have missed some items. If so, do let me know. In a similar vein I was contacted this year by Bruce Coplestone-Crow regarding several of his papers over the last few years that haven’t been included in the bibliography.

  • AJ Aitken a History of Scots
    A. J. Aitken A history of Scots (1985)1 Edited by Caroline Macafee Editor’s Introduction In his ‘Sources of the vocabulary of Older Scots’ (1954: n. 7; 2015), AJA had remarked on the distribution of Scandinavian loanwords in Scots, and deduced from this that the language had been influenced by population movements from the North of England. In his ‘History of Scots’ for the introduction to The Concise Scots Dictionary, he follows the historian Geoffrey Barrow (1980) in seeing Scots as descended primarily from the Anglo-Danish of the North of England, with only a marginal role for the Old English introduced earlier into the South-East of Scotland. AJA concludes with some suggestions for further reading: this section has been omitted, as it is now, naturally, out of date. For a much fuller and more detailed history up to 1700, incorporating much of AJA’s own work on the Older Scots period, the reader is referred to Macafee and †Aitken (2002). Two textual anthologies also offer historical treatments of the language: Görlach (2002) and, for Older Scots, Smith (2012). Corbett et al. eds. (2003) gives an accessible overview of the language, and a more detailed linguistic treatment can be found in Jones ed. (1997). How to cite this paper (adapt to the desired style): Aitken, A. J. • THE ORIGINS of the “Mccrackens”
THE ORIGINS OF THE “McCrackens” By Philip D. Smith, Jr. PhD, FSTS, GTS, FSA Scot “B’e a’Ghaidhlig an canan na h’Albanaich” – “Gaelic was the language of the Scottish people.” The McCrackens are originally Scottish and speakers of the Scottish Gaelic language, a cousin to Irish Gaelic. While today, Gaelic is only spoken by a few thousands, it was the language of most of the people of the north and west of Scotland until after 1900. The McCracken history comes from a long tradition passed from generation to generation by the “seannachies”, the oral historians, of the Gaelic speaking peoples. According to tradition, the family is named for Nachten, Lord of Moray, a district in the northeast of Scotland. Nachten supposedly lived in the 9th century. In the course of time a number of his descendants moved southwest across Scotland and settled in Argyll. The family multiplied and prospered. The Gaelic word for “son” is “mac” and that for “children” is “clann” The descendants of Nachten were called by their neighbors, the Campbells, MacDougalls, and others the “Children of the Son of Nachten”, in Gaelic “Cloinne MacNachtain”, “Clan MacNachtan”. Spelling was not regularized in either Scotland or America until well after 1800. Two spellings alternate for the guttural /k/-like sound common in many Gaelic words, -ch and –gh. /ch/ is the most common Scottish spelling but the sound may be spelled –gh. The Scottish word for “lake” is “loch” while in Northern England and Ireland the same word is spelled “lough”. “MacLachlan” and “Mac Loughlin” are the same name as are “Docherty” and “Dougherty”.
