Burns Night takes place each year on the 25th of January, the birthday of Scotland’s national poet Robert Burns. In the evening many people in Scotland have a special meal with their family and friends. A typical meal on this night starts with a plate of Scottish haggis. Then they read some of Burns’ poems. St. Andrew’s Day is celebrated on the 30th of November. It is the day of Saint Andrew and the official national day of Scotland. On this holiday, everything Scottish is celebrated – food, dance, music, fashion and literature. Hogmanay is celebrated on the evening of the 31st of December and ends at midnight, the New Year. The name of the festival is Scottish and means “the last day of the year”. People eat little cakes called “black buns” and bring their neighbours small presents (whiskey, coal, salt or shortbread). This tradition is called “first-footing”. If you are the first visitor to arrive with presents, you will have good luck in the new year.
