MAGDALENE OF CANOSSA MAGDALENE OF CANOSSA was born at Verona on 1st March, 1774. in a noble and wealthy family, the second of five children. From her early childhood she had to face many trials like the death of her father, abandonment by the mother. In her early childhood Magdalene showed clear signs of piety and goodness. She was not selfish, deceitful or proud. She loved the poor and the suffering very much. Even as a child she always spoke the truth because she did not want to offend God who is Truth. She felt very strongly that God was calling her to a life of self-giving to needy people. In the midst of her untiring activities and heavy family responsibilities Magdalene found time for a life of prayer. From the luxurious palace Magdalene gazed on the misery of the poor, living among the squatters of Verona. faced with so many needs. Magdalene felt that she could not manage everything by herself, so she searched and found her first companions who accepted her invitation to share a life of poverty and unconditional love. In 1808, Magdalene left the Canossa Palace and all her dear ones to start the new Canossa family called the “Daughters of Charity” in order to serve Christ in the poor. Charity is an ever speading fire and Magdalene opened her heart to the needs of other countries. Magdalene died in Verona in 1835 at the age of 61. She was proclaimed “Blessed” by the Church on 8th December 1941. Magdalene was canonised (Called a saint) on 2nd October 1988 in Rome. 5 ST. JOSEPHINE BAKHITA Bakhita was born in the region of Sudan, Africa in 1869. As a little girl, this African flower, knew the anguish of slavery and kidnapping. She was stolen by slave-traders and cruelly tortured. In this traumatic experience the little girl, could not remember her name and was named BAKHITA which means ‘The Lucky One.’ After being sold and resold, She was finally bought by an Italian Consul. For the first time now Bakhita experienced being loved and cared for, as a person. At her insistent request, she went with the Italian Consul, to Italy. There she was given as a present to a couple that had a little daughter. Through them she came to know the Canossian Sisters in Venice. She asked to be baptized. Later she offered herself totally to God as a Canossian Sister. 6 Simple and humble, she was full of love for God and neighbour. On 8th February 1947, she breathed her last at the age of 78, in Italy. She was declared a Saint on 1st October, 2000. by Pope John Paul II, who gave her the title “Universal Sister”.
