ble. In the spirit of true stewardship, I pray that all of you will come to participate and contribute to our parish life. First and foremost is worship, for, in the words

of our Metropolitan Iakovos: “every ministry in the parish must lead to the al- tar”. Without an active worship and sacramental life, the church becomes just another cultural or social club. Through worship our good Lord nourishes us, blesses us, and fills us with the Holy Spirit. Then we must bring Christ out in “And what does the Lord require of the world and transform it through learning, service, and fellowship. I hope you? To act justly and to love mercy th and to walk humbly with your God.” that you will all find your voice and unique role as we begin our 100 year of ministry and service at our beloved Saint Spyridon. 4 The Voice PTA NEWS

It is with much joy that we welcome back our Greek and Sunday school families as we start the new school year! Our P.T.A board consists of a wonderful group of women that have a deep love and dedication to our school and parish: Vice President-Yianna Halikias, Secretary- Sofia Malamis, Treasurer- Helen Halikias, Treasurer- Connie Papadatos. Together we completed our first successful year and are eager for the school year ahead. Our annual Back to School retreat was a great success. Students had the opportunity to participate in fun activities, see old friends, make new ones, and receive a blessing for a start to a wonderful school year. There was excitement in the air! This year’s P.T.A board is looking forward to a year filled with new exciting projects and events. Our main goal is to contin- ue to enrich our students’ pride in our Greek culture and keep our Orthodox teachings alive. In the past few years, our P.T.A, along with the dedication and love from parishioners, families, and friends has accomplished many goals and spear- headed new community projects. This year P.T.A will continue to raise funds for the improvements to our Community Hall. Many activities and events take place here that benefit our children and community. It is the center of our school programs, athletic programs, luncheons, retreats, Metropolis events and much more. There has been a special fund already established and as P.T.A president, along with my Board, it will be our main fundraising focus for the next school year. Our first day of Greek School is on Monday September 12th at 4:30. Students will begin with an Agiasmos service and then head to their classrooms until 6:30. Please have students dress appropriately for the church service. Please join us for our first meeting on Friday, September 16th at 5pm. At this meeting, parents will have the opportunity to join the P.T.A and hear about all we have to offer this year. We have many new ideas and need your help and support to continue to provide fun activities for our students. We encourage all families to participate and get involved in their child’s spiritual and cultural upbringing through P.T.A. Often times we lack volunteers and are hoping to increase our parental support this year. All are always welcoming and have fun ourselves preparing for our school events. It is only with your love and help that our goals can be realized. Please save the date of Sunday, October 16th for our Annual Dinner Dance. The P.T.A will hold a raffle on that date. We are looking for prizes and for your support in the purchasing and selling of raffle tickets. All of our families will receive raffle tickets through their children’s classes. We thank all of the families that have already committed to donating raffle prizes! We are looking forward to this great community event. In closing, I am grateful to all our Greek School and Sunday School teachers, past P.T.A Presidents and Boards, volunteers, parents, and our beloved Presvytera Georgia Alikakos and Father Tilemahos for their tireless dedication to our school and parish. To my Board, whom I call my friends, together, we will accomplish great things. I wish you all a Blessed school year and am looking forward to my second P.T.A term as President. Demetra Mikroulis P.T.A. President

St. Spyridon Hellenic Orthodox Church 5 PHILOPTOCHOS NEWS

Dear Fellow Parishioners, I wish all our church family a blessed start of the ecclesiastical year, as we start again with love and harmony. Our church festival in July was a huge success! I would like to complement all those who worked so hard in every area. Thanks to the chairman, and those in charge of tickets, Food, Loukou- mades, Bar, Opa Café, Kitchen and Pastries. A special thank you to the donors and the bakers. Congratulations Philoptochos for all your hard work. One other highlight of the summer was the Clergy Laity Confer- ence in Nashville. Father Tilemahos,Toula Georgiopoulos and I attended. Over 1000 Clergy and Delegates were there to inform, present, teach and learn. Philoptochos celebrated 85 years of Philanthropy, Fellowship and Faith in Action. We are 25,000 strong in the United States. And have done wonders. Since 2005 we have given $48,000,000 to needy causes. A new nationwide feed the Hungry Initiative was started and we have fed over 250, 000 needy in the nation. The pioneers before us laid the groundwork by baking and cooking. Thanks to them today we have flash drives and computers as we continue to bake and cook and help the less fortunate. A presentation was given by Holy Cross College and Seminary. Our own Nick Mataragas is there and so were our own Father Aristides Garinis and Father Peter Spiro. We are very proud of them and continue to support Holy Cross. Under The guidance of our Spiritual Father, His Grace Bishop Sevastianos, presented an informative and inspiring conference. THINGS ACCOMPLISHED AND REPORTED We kept the membership year Jan 1st to December 31st. The OCMC commitment was renamed Support Orthodox Christian Missions and support a Mission Priest. The Public Relations committee report explained how we as a body are connected by press releases, newspapers and the Philoptochos web site. We were encouraged to use news media and incorporate technology to engage new and younger members. Our Patriarch is called the green Patriarch for his dedication to the environment. Following this theme, we had a presentation on water conservation. 183 gallons of water is treated per person per day: running hot water for five minutes is equal to 14 hours of light electricity: 71 percent of the earth is water but only 1 percent is fresh water. We were informed how to conserve water in our homes and environment. We were told about the Apostoli Project in Greece that helps our mother country with our assistance. The Piloptochos continues to aid Greece and Cyprus. The Department of Social Services explained how we can go to them for individuals in our parishes who are in need. They can also inform us as to agencies in our areas. We had a presentation on Human Trafficking: A mother who was a victim in the past and has turned her life around and reunited with her daughter spoke to us. An organization called Thistle Farms and Magdalene, hous- es these women and helps them .Philoptochos members gave $25 gift cards with kind words and a small icon. Throughout the country chapters presented their challenges with fund raisers and projects. St. Nicholas of Oak Lawn was honored for having a great fund raiser for a boy with neuroblastoma. The Ascen- sion Church of Libertyville made durable bags for the needy. They made different kinds of bags for the home- less, schoolbags, Veterans bags, Prison bags and children’s bags +all with the proper contents inside. St. Spyridon Hellenic Orthodox Church 9 FESTIVAL 2016

10 The Voice FESTIVAL 2016

St. Spyridon Hellenic Orthodox Church 11 THANK YOU TO ALL OUR FESTIVAL SUPPORTERS A big Thank You to goes out to all those who planned, worked and supported this year’s festival. Once again, our parish was successful in making the weekend truly enjoyable for everyone. Many thanks to our festival chairman Kosta Labrakis, and his planning committee for their efforts in making everything run smoothly. Of course, we couldn’t pull it off without all of our tireless volunteers that worked so hard to: prepare, cook and serve all of the delicious food; serve us beverages to keep us cool; make frappe after frappe in the relaxing Café Opa; sell many, many raffle tickets; offer Greek & Orthodox items for sale at the Bookstore; greet everyone with a warm smile at the Welcome Entrance. To our Philoptochos ladies, who baked and sold delectable sweets & loukoumades, we love all you do for us! To the youth of our parish, and the very talented St. Spyridon Dance Troupe, and the Neolea and Orpheus Dance Troupes, thank you for entertaining us with your beautiful dancing! We are also grateful to our generous donors for the ongoing sup- port. Και του χρόνου! St. Spyridon Hellenic Orthodox Church 13 GOLF OUTING 2016—THANK YOU TO ALL OUR GOLFERS

St. Spyridon’s 19th annual golf outing and dinner social took place on Tuesday, August 23th. The day was filled with fellowship as participants enjoyed golfing, continental breakfast, lunch, BBQ buffet dinner, and a prize- filled raffle. The hole in one contest to win a brand new Hyundai Sonata was exciting to try for all. Congratulations to Steve Loulousis and Frank Kopanis for winning the closest to the pin contests on their respective holes. Nick Skiado- poulos won the longest drive contest. Jim Korbakes, Bob Blasing, Telly Korbakes Gus Kolyvas and Dr. Chris Kolyvas won the best golf score contest. This important fundraiser helps support our St. Spyridon’s Church Building Fund. Last year’s donations helped rebuild all four of the bell tower roofs, getting us closer to hearing our old Church bell ring again. This year’s donations will help to repair damaged exterior wall bricks and roof drainage systems around the Church as well as many other projects that help maintain our Church structures. Thank you to our participants, sponsors, vol- unteers and the Odyssey Country Club that helped make this a memorable day.

Our classes begin on September 11th. Registrations are being accept- ed in the Church office, so please make sure to reg- ister your children as soon as possible to allow us to plan accordingly. Many thanks to all of you who attended the Back to School picnic on Saturday, August 27th. The retreat featured many arts and crafts, and the blessing of the backpacks. Many thanks to all the donors and volunteers. The kids all enjoyed playing games to- gether and sharing a meal provided by the PTA. Back to School Retreat 2016 We have an exciting year planned and would like to focus more on having the students participate weekly in either contributing to our food pantry or bringing a monetary donation to class. An important part of Sunday School is teaching students the importance of steward- ship and creating the habit of giving back. In the spirit of doing so, we will once again have our 8th Walk for the IOCC on November 5th at the scenic Lake Katherine. For those of you who have attended in the past, thank you and we hope to see you again this year. For any who have yet to join us please do. Lake Katherine is beautiful and as easy path to walk. All the proceeds from this event go to the IOCC (International Orthodox Christian Charities) who truly do an amazing job with getting the funds they receive to the right place—in fact 94% goes directly to where the need exists. Please con- sider joining us for a great event. Zoe Kopanis, Sunday School Director

2nd Annual Softball Game On Saturday, July 30th, Saint Spyridon and Sts. Con- stantine & Helen met for their 2nd Annual Softball game. The Saint Spyridon team, after borrowing a couple of players, came out victorious. However, eve- ryone who participated came out a winner, enjoying a fun game and excellent food, from hamburgers and hot dogs to lamb on the spit. We hope that more peo- ple will join us next year on July 29th, 2017.

CUSTODIAN WANTED The custodian is responsible for performing the cleaning, minor maintenance, and other miscellaneous duties to ensure that the St. Spyridon building complex and grounds are maintained in a safe, secure, healthy and sani- tary manner. The custodian is the go-to person for any building needs; works and interacts daily with the church clergy, church staff, and school staff. Fulfilling the responsibilities of a custodian is physically demanding. The custodian spends much of the time standing, walking, lifting, sweeping, general cleaning, and removing trash. Regular set up and take down of tables and chairs is also a regular part of the position. Work is primarily per- formed indoors, in offices, classrooms, bathrooms, kitchen, and common areas. Outside work is also required, including but not limited to grounds keeping, and snow removal. The custodian reports to the President of the Parish Council and/or the Parish Priest. The position is part-time, 20-25 hours/week. For more information, please contact Fr. Tilemahos or Mr. Korbakes at the church office at 708-385-2311.
