50th Anniversary of the Pikes Peak Ascent and Marathon Chuck Smead, 1972 Champion Ascent 2:09:30 and Marathon 3:44:21 Calvin Hansen holds the champions record for the years 1958 to 1961. Steve Gachupin reigned in 1966-1971. Steve was the first competitor to maintain a steady running pace and went on to the Olympic try-outs. Rick Trujillo held the championship title from 1973 to 1977. Matt Carpenter has reigned since the ‘80s in both the Ascent and Marathon. Women have been part of the races since the early days. Although they often only did the Ascent (which didn’t count because then only the round-trip was considered officially acceptable), it is noted that in 1959 “Arlene Pieper, with her 9:16 round-trip effort, became the first woman on record to officially finish a marathon in the United States, years before Roberta Gibb and Katherine Switzer gained massive notoriety with their unofficial Boston Marathon finishes.” From America’s Utlimate Challenge: The Pikes Peak Marathon by Harald Fricker. 21 50th Anniversary of the Pikes Peak Ascent and Marathon Karen Gorman 1993 Marathon Champion Lynn won at the age of 19 and was the first woman to break the 3-hour finish in a time of 2:44:47 J’ne Day-Lucore 1992 Ascent Champion 22 50th Anniversary of the Pikes Peak Ascent and Marathon Mar Erica Larson racing in one of her 5 wins!
