While in London we will travel to art museums and galleries, experiencing contemporary art and art history in person. Students will keep a travel journal documenting the museums and galleries we visit, as well as creating small on-site pieces of art that will serve as inspiration for future work. The trip will expand on the students' knowledge of art and how to develop their own conceptual identity and studio practice! Content: This Visual Travel Journal Class will allow students to develop research, visual studies and inspiration that they will then use to create a piece of art when they return home. Art students need to develop research and conceptual development skills to make artwork that is intellectually thoughtful and exhibit strong formal components. Inspiration for making work can come from looking at contemporary and historic artists. Not only can students gain knowledge on developing content in ones work through looking at other artists they can also learn how to compose a piece of art by looking at the formal qualities in pieces of art. London has a rich art culture and we will be visiting many of the famous museums and galleries for visual inspiration and discussion. Over the course of two weeks we would visit Museums and Galleries that specialize in Contemporary Art such as the Whitechapel Gallery, Tate Modern, Serpentine Gallery in Hyde Park, Saatchi Gallery, Barbican Art Gallery, and the Design Museum. We would also go to museums with art historical collections such as the Tate Britain, National Portrait Gallery, National Gallery, and V & A Decorative Museum. London has an active contemporary gallery district and we will go to as many galleries as time allows, such as Hayward Gallery, Saatchi Gallery, Haunch of Venison, Pace London, White Cube, and Victoria Miro. Artist can gain inspiration and reference materials from sources outside of the visual arts. With that in mind I would also consider taking students to the British Museum, the National History Museum, and Science Museum where they would be able to add to their travel journals and research for making art. Academic Goals Visit the top art Museums and Galleries in London. Compose a travel journal that documents the art, artist and other inspirational items from London that could be used in the creation of a piece of art. This journal will also document non-art related inspiration that the student is also interested in researching. Compose a small daily drawing/collage that documents students' thoughts and inspirations about the previous days experience. Participate and attend daily critiques on daily drawings, this will develop student verbal critique skills and provide feedback about the work they are making on sight. We will also discus the previous day's excursion, discussing the conceptual and formal qualities of the work viewed on exhibit. Participate and present their work in the final critique in London where students will propose their plan for the piece of art they will make upon returning. Upon return complete a piece of artwork that is based on the research and drawings done on sight. This piece is open to any 2D, 3D or 4D medium depending on the interests of the individual student. Assessment Methods: 40%: travel journal: includes documentation through writing and sketches of the museums and galleries visited, gathering and collecting ideas, formal studies, color and material studies for final project. 20%: small daily drawing and/or colleges in reflection of the information collected on excursions and travel journal. 10 drawings total. 10%: participation in group discussions and critiques on journal entries and small drawings/collages. 30%: final art project: medium and idea will be discussed in London. Upon return form the trip students will execute the project completing a finished peiece of work based on their travel journal and daily drawings/collages. 1906 College Heights Blvd – Tate Page Hall Room 104 – Bowling Green, KY 42101 – 270‐745‐4512 – [email protected] .
