  • The Indy Racing League and the Indianapolis 500
The Indy Racing League and the Indianapolis 500: Increasing Competition in Open-Wheeled Automobile Racing in the United States Robert W. White Department of Sociology and Andrew J. Baker Department of Geography School of Liberal Arts IUPUI We thank Terri Talbert-Hatch and Pete Hylton for their comments and support of Motorsports Studies. Please direct correspondence to Robert White ([email protected]), Professor of Sociology and Director of Motorsports Studies, or Andrew Baker ([email protected]), Lecturer, Department of Geography, School of Liberal Arts, Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI), 425 University Boulevard, Indianapolis, Indiana, 46202. 1 The Indy Racing League and the Indianapolis 500: Increasing Competition in Open-Wheeled Automobile Racing in the United States Abstract Over the course of its lengthy history, the popularity of open-wheeled automobile racing in the United States has waxed and waned. This is especially evident in recent years. The 1996 “split” between the Indy Racing League (IRL; later, the IndyCar Series) and Championship Auto Racing Teams (CART; later the Champ Car World Series) severely hurt the sport. Following the split there was a well-documented decline in fan interest from which the sport has not recovered. Less understood, however, is that under the Indy Racing League the Indianapolis 500, the premier event in open-wheeled racing in the United States, became more competitive. Ironically, while fan interest decreased in the Indy Racing League era, the quality of racing increased. The increased competition associated with the Indy Racing League is a historically significant development that bodes well for the future of the sport.

HELIO RETURNS TO SITE OF FIRST FENCE CLIMB: Helio Castroneves returns to Belle Isle, hoping to climb the fence at the circuit where he won his first Indy car race in 2000. TITLE FIGHT DECIDED AT SONOMA: The Verizon IndyCar Series championship has only two eligible drivers, but the championship lead has belonged to one driver since early in the season. Simon Pagenaud took control of the championship standings following a torrid start to 2016 with five finishes of first or second in the first five races and carries a 43-point advantage over Will Power into the GoPro Grand Prix of Sonoma. Pagenaud can win the title with a finish of fourth or better. Joe Skibinski/IMS Photo WHAT TO WATCH FOR THIS WEEKEND: BAY AREA IS TITLE TOWN: The Verizon IndyCar Series championship will be decided in the final race for the 11th year in a row, with Sonoma Raceway hosting the finale for the second straight season. The Verizon IndyCar Series championship will be the fourth major sports title clinched in Northern California this year alongside the NFL Championship (Denver Broncos defeated Carolina Panthers in Super Bowl 50 in Santa Clara), NBA championship (Cleveland Cavaliers defeated Golden State Warriors in Oakland) and NHL Stanley Cup Championship (Pittsburgh Penguins defeated San Jose Sharks in San Jose). TOASTING TEAM PENSKE’S SUCCESS: Team Penske looks to add to its dominance at Sonoma Raceway. The team, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2016, has won five of the last eight races at the track and won the pole position six times. One of Penske’s title-contending duo of Will Power and Simon Pagenaud will celebrate a championship. Can they or teammates Juan Pablo Montoya and Helio Castroneves also provide team owner Roger Penske more hardware this weekend? LAST CHANCE TO CLAIM A WIN IN 2016: Indy car race winners Helio Castroneves, Ryan Hunter-Reay, Tony Kanaan, Charlie Kimball, Carlos Munoz and James Hinchcliffe have finished on the podium in 2016, but they are still looking for a trip to Victory Lane.

This year will mark the Firestone brand’s 67th Indy 500 victory. Firestone has more Indy 500 wins than all other tire manufacturers combined. CAN HINCH GO FROM THE POLE TO VICTORY LANE: James Hinchcliffe wrote the latest chapter of his comeback story when he scored the pole for the 100th Indianapolis 500 last weekend. History will be on his side this weekend as the Indy 500 pole has gone on to win the race 20 times. Forty-three times, the winner has come from the front row, the last time in 2010 with Dario Franchitti. Will Hinch covert his Verizon P1 Award into the Borg-Warner Trophy? Chris Jones/IMS Photo WHAT TO WATCH FOR THIS MONTH: IT’S NOT WHERE YOU START…: The last four Indianapolis 500 winners have started outside the top 10, including Juan Pablo Montoya, who came from 15th to win in 2015. With depth throughout the 33-car field for the Indy 500, including former winners Montoya, Scott Dixon and Tony Kanaan starting from the fifth row or further back, can another star drive through the field to win the race? SECOND-GENERATION STARS HOPE TO ADD TO FAMILY LEGACY: The latest generation from two of open-wheel racing’s most familiar families comes to Indianapolis in hopes of adding to the family legacy. Marco Andretti—the grandson of 1969 winner Mario Andretti and son of Michael Andretti—has finished in the top three at Indy three times in his nine previous starts. He hopes to give his father’s team its fourth Indianapolis 500 win.
