Guide to the Flora of the Carolinas, Virginia, and Georgia, Working Draft of 17 March 2004 -- LILIACEAE LILIACEAE de Jussieu 1789 (Lily Family) (also see AGAVACEAE, ALLIACEAE, ALSTROEMERIACEAE, AMARYLLIDACEAE, ASPARAGACEAE, COLCHICACEAE, HEMEROCALLIDACEAE, HOSTACEAE, HYACINTHACEAE, HYPOXIDACEAE, MELANTHIACEAE, NARTHECIACEAE, RUSCACEAE, SMILACACEAE, THEMIDACEAE, TOFIELDIACEAE) As here interpreted narrowly, the Liliaceae constitutes about 11 genera and 550 species, of the Northern Hemisphere. There has been much recent investigation and re-interpretation of evidence regarding the upper-level taxonomy of the Liliales, with strong suggestions that the broad Liliaceae recognized by Cronquist (1981) is artificial and polyphyletic. Cronquist (1993) himself concurs, at least to a degree: "we still await a comprehensive reorganization of the lilies into several families more comparable to other recognized families of angiosperms." Dahlgren & Clifford (1982) and Dahlgren, Clifford, & Yeo (1985) synthesized an early phase in the modern revolution of monocot taxonomy. Since then, additional research, especially molecular (Duvall et al. 1993, Chase et al. 1993, Bogler & Simpson 1995, and many others), has strongly validated the general lines (and many details) of Dahlgren's arrangement. The most recent synthesis (Kubitzki 1998a) is followed as the basis for familial and generic taxonomy of the lilies and their relatives (see summary below). References: Angiosperm Phylogeny Group (1998, 2003); Tamura in Kubitzki (1998a). Our “liliaceous” genera (members of orders placed in the Lilianae) are therefore divided as shown below, largely following Kubitzki (1998a) and some more recent molecular analyses. Biologica Nyssana, 7 (2), December 2016: 107-112. Muntele Mic Mountain is located in the southwestern part of Romania and belongs to the Southern Carpathians. Although relatively small, Muntele Mic contains most of typical mountain and high-mountain habitats. The field research regarding the orchid’s family in the Muntele Mic area, have started in the summer of 2009. Owing to easy access (asphalt road that goes to the tourist center of Muntele Mic), although it is classified as part of the European Natura 2000 network (ROSCI0126 Munţii Ţarcu), the area is influenced by negative anthropogenic factors. Although considered to be a very anthropized area, the field research concluded that there are 10 species of orchids growing in this location, of which three: Gymnadenia frivaldii Hampe ex Griseb., Dactylorhiza fuchsii (Druce) Soó and Dactylorhiza saccifera (Brongn.) Soó), were not mentioned in the literature data. BACKGROUND and PURPOSE In an effort to encourage the protection of native Maine plants that are naturally reduced or low in number, the State Planning Office has compiled a list of endangered and threatened plants. Of Maine's approximately 1500 native vascular plant species, 155, or about 10%, are included on the Official List of Maine's Plants that are Endangered or Threatened. Of the species on the list, three are also listed at the federal level. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. has des·ignated the Furbish's Lousewort (Pedicularis furbishiae) and Small Whorled Pogonia (lsotria medeoloides) as Endangered species and the Prairie White-fringed Orchid (Platanthera leucophaea) as Threatened. Listing rare plants of a particular state or region is a process rather than an isolated and finite event. -

Recently discovered fossils document their existence for at least 15 Ma. The last common ancestor of all orchids has been estimated to exist about 80 Ma ago (Ramirez et al. 2007, Gustafsson et al. 2010). Orchids are cosmopolitan, distributed on all continents and a great variety of habitats, ranging from deserts and swamps to arctic regions. Two large groups can be distinguished: Epiphytic and epilithic orchids attach themselves with aerial roots to trees or stones, mostly halfway between the ground and the upper canopy where they absorb water through the velamen of their roots. -

Cypripedium parviflorum Salisb. synonym: Cypripedium calceolus L. var. parviflorum (Salisb.) Fernald yellow lady's-slipper Orchidaceae - orchid family status: State Threatened, USFS sensitive rank: G5 / S2 General Description: Perennial with showy flowers; stems 7-70 cm tall, sparsely pubescent, somewhat glandular. Leaves several, alternate, bases slightly sheathing the stem, broadly elliptic to elliptic-lanceolate, 6-17 x up to 7 cm, lightly pubescent, usually glandular. Floral Characteristics: Flower 1 (rarely 2), terminal, subtended by an erect, leaflike bract. Sepals and petals greenish or yellowish, often marked with dark reddish brown or purplish spots, blotches, or streaks. Upper sepal broadest, 19-80 x 7-40 mm; the lateral pair of sepals completely fused or with only a notch at their tip. Petals somewhat narrower and longer than the sepals, 24-97 x 3-12 mm, often wavy-margined and spirally twisted. Lip strongly pouched, 15-54 mm long, pale to deep yellow (rarely white), sometimes with reddish or Illustration by Jeanne R. Janish, purplish spots around the orifice. Flowers May to June. ©1969 University of Washington Press Fruits: Ellipsoid to oblong-ellipsoid capsules. Identif ication Tips: Cypripedium montanum has a white lip, rarely suffused with magenta. It may hybridize with C. parviflorum, resulting in individuals with very pale yellow lips. The habitat of C. montanum is typically well-drained upland, while that of C. parviflorum is wetland/riparian or the ecotone between wetland and upland. Two varieties, var. makas in and var. pubes cens , are both reported from WA ; their relative abundance and distribution is under review. Mihail Sadoveanu, nr. 3, 700490–Iaşi, Romania Corresponding author: [email protected] This second part of the paper about the vascular flora of Rarău Massif listed approximately half of the whole number of the species registered by the authors in their field trips or already included in literature on the same area. Other taxa have been added to the initial list of plants, so that, the total number of taxa registered by the authors in Rarău Massif amount to 1443 taxa (1133 species and 310 subspecies, varieties and forms). There was signaled out the alien taxa on the surveyed area (18 species) and those dubious presence of some taxa for the same area (17 species). Also, there were listed all the vascular plants, protected by various laws or regulations, both internal or international, existing in Rarău (i.e. 189 taxa). Finally, there has been assessed the degree of wild flora conservation, using several indicators introduced in literature by Nowak, as they are: conservation indicator (C), threat conservation indicator) (CK), sozophytisation indicator (W), and conservation effectiveness indicator (E). INTRODUCTION A comprehensive analysis of Rarău flora, in terms of plant diversity, taxonomic structure, biological, ecological and phytogeographic characteristics, as well as in terms of the richness in endemics, relict or threatened plant species was published in our previous note (see Oprea & Sîrbu 2012). -

NECEC Site Location of Development Application Unusual Natural Areas 9.0 UNUSUAL NATURAL AREAS 9.1 Introduction Numerous plant species in Maine are considered rare, threatened, and endangered (RTE), and that are protected under the federal Endangered Species Act of 1973 (16 U.S.C. §§ 1531 et seq.) and/or Maine’s Natural Areas Program (MNAP) statute (12 M.R.S. §§ 544, 544-B & 544- C). Under the federal Endangered Species Act there are one endangered and two threatened plant species in Maine. These plants include the Furbish’s lousewort (Pedicularis furbishiae), prairie white-fringed orchid (Platanthera leucophaea), and small whorled pogonia (Isotria medeoloides). The Official Species List, obtained through the ECOS-IPAC website, identifies the small- whorled pogonia (Federally Threatened) and its possible presence within the boundaries of the NECEC Project. The MNAP tracks a total of 347 plant species: 98 of these are listed as endangered, 75 as threatened, 105 of special concern, and 69 as “potentially extirpated” (i.e., not known recently in the state) (MNAP 2015). The MNAP has also classified natural and distinguished vegetative communities across the state and has identified rare and unusual natural community types. According to the MNAP, “A natural community is an assemblage of interacting plants and animals and their common environment, recurring across the landscape, in which the effects of human intervention are minimal. A natural community includes all of the organisms (plant and animal) in a particular physical setting, as well as the physical setting itself” (MNAP 2004). The MNAP is particularly interested in natural community types ranked S1, S2, or S3, and outstanding examples of S4 and S5 types. -

For over 35 years the flora of the Arnside and Silverdale AONB has been recorded. First by Dr Margaret Baeker and Charles Bromley Webb followed by Julie Clarke who records for the BSBI. Geoffrey Halliday recorded the Cumbrian tetrads (2km squares) and Eric Greenwood the Lancashire ones for their Floras. Ken and I first got involved when we helped Charles Bromley Webb put all his records onto a computer. Julie and I went on to follow in his footsteps as the botanical recorders for the Arnside and District Natural History Society. Aided by a willing band of amateur botanists we have tried to record every species growing in each one-kilometre square (Monad) of the AONB and to record its progress through time. I suspect that there is still plenty out there to be discovered. We have not managed to cover all the squares. This is an attempt to make some of the knowledge we have gained available to the wider public. -

Pe- culiarities of ornamental orchid viruses has become known in different countries of the world while there is nothing known about orchid virus infection in natural flora of Europe, for example in Ukraine. After extensive virus detection of natural orchids of Ukraine (Carpathians, Crimea), some viruses infecting these plants in their natural inhabitance were determined.
