Last year’s runner-up Aljaz Bedene and wild card Ramkumar Ramanathan meet. In the opening match on Stadium Court, Wawrinka and Garcia-Lopez square off the 10th time (Wawrinka leads 6-3 overall, 3-0 on hard courts). Wawrinka comes in with a nine-match winning streak and 18-0 mark in sets in Chennai. The Swiss No. 2, who also won the title in 2011, owns a 20-4 record in Chennai. Garcia-Lopez is trying to reach the semi-finals for the second time (’05) and post his first Top 4 win since beating No. 3 Wawrinka in the 1R at Roland Garros in 2014. In the second match on, last year’s runner-up, Bedene and wild card Ramanathan battle it out for the first time. Bedene has an 11-3 record in Chennai and he’s trying to reach his third semi-final (’13). The 21-year-old Ramanathan is trying to become the first Indian to reach the semi-finals since Somdev Devvarman advanced to the final in 2009 (l. to Cilic). The up-and-coming Indian is making his ATP World Tour quarter-final debut. In the third match on, Coric looks for his first win (0-2) against 2013 runner-up Bautista Agut, who won both previous meetings last year on clay in Umag and Hamburg. The 19-year-old Coric, the youngest player remaining and in the Top 50 Emirates ATP Rankings at No. 44, is aiming for his fourth career ATP World Tour semi-final. Last year he reached the SFs in Dubai and Nice. The Spaniard is coming off his second straight Top 25 finish in the Emirates ATP Rankings. He was runner-up in Moscow and Valencia. On Court 1, No. 3 Paire, who is also in the doubles semi-finals (w/Krajicek), takes on Italian qualifier Thomas Fabbiano for the first time. Paire was last year’s ATP Comeback Player of the Year after jumping from No. 118 to No. 19 in the Emirates ATP Rankings. He won a Futures, ATP Challenger Tour and ATP World Tour title during his career-best season. Coming into this week, the No. 157th-ranked Fabbiano had an 0-6 career record on the ATP World Tour.
