Primitive Recursive Functions Are Recursively Enumerable
AN ENUMERATION OF THE PRIMITIVE RECURSIVE FUNCTIONS WITHOUT REPETITION SHIH-CHAO LIU (Received April 15,1900) In a theorem and its corollary [1] Friedberg gave an enumeration of all the recursively enumerable sets without repetition and an enumeration of all the partial recursive functions without repetition. This note is to prove a similar theorem for the primitive recursive functions. The proof is only a classical one. We shall show that the theorem is intuitionistically unprovable in the sense of Kleene [2]. For similar reason the theorem by Friedberg is also intuitionistical- ly unprovable, which is not stated in his paper. THEOREM. There is a general recursive function ψ(n, a) such that the sequence ψ(0, a), ψ(l, α), is an enumeration of all the primitive recursive functions of one variable without repetition. PROOF. Let φ(n9 a) be an enumerating function of all the primitive recursive functions of one variable, (See [3].) We define a general recursive function v(a) as follows. v(0) = 0, v(n + 1) = μy, where μy is the least y such that for each j < n + 1, φ(y, a) =[= φ(v(j), a) for some a < n + 1. It is noted that the value v(n + 1) can be found by a constructive method, for obviously there exists some number y such that the primitive recursive function <p(y> a) takes a value greater than all the numbers φ(v(0), 0), φ(y(Ϋ), 0), , φ(v(n\ 0) f or a = 0 Put ψ(n, a) = φ{v{n), a). -

Ripley 2015 Abstract Undergraduate music students often experience a high learning curve when they first encounter pitch-class set theory, an analytical system very different from those they have studied previously. Students sometimes find the abstractions of integer notation and the mathematical orientation of set theory foreign or even frightening (Kleppinger 2010), and the dissonance of the atonal repertoire studied often engenders their resistance (Root 2010). Pedagogical games can help mitigate student resistance and trepidation. Table games like Bingo (Gillespie 2000) and Poker (Gingerich 1991) have been adapted to suit college-level classes in music theory. Familiar television shows provide another source of pedagogical games; for example, Berry (2008; 2015) adapts the show Survivor to frame a unit on theory fundamentals. However, none of these pedagogical games engage pitch- class set theory during a multi-week unit of study. In my dissertation, I adapt the show Survivor to frame a four-week unit on pitch- class set theory (introducing topics ranging from pitch-class sets to twelve-tone rows) during a sophomore-level theory course. As on the show, students of different achievement levels work together in small groups, or “tribes,” to complete worksheets called “challenges”; however, in an important modification to the structure of the show, no students are voted out of their tribes. -

Chapter One Pitch-Class Set Theory: An Overture A Tale of Two Continents In the late afternoon of October 24, 1999, about one hundred people were gathered in a large rehearsal room of the Rotterdam Conservatory. They were listening to a discussion between representatives of nine European countries about the teaching of music theory and music analysis. It was the third day of the Fourth European Music Analysis Conference.1 Most participants in the conference (which included a number of music theorists from Canada and the United States) had been looking forward to this session: meetings about the various analytical traditions and pedagogical practices in Europe were rare, and a broad survey of teaching methods was lacking. Most felt a need for information from beyond their country’s borders. This need was reinforced by the mobility of music students and the resulting hodgepodge of nationalities at renowned conservatories and music schools. Moreover, the European systems of higher education were on the threshold of a harmoni- zation operation. Earlier that year, on June 19, the governments of 29 coun- tries had ratifi ed the “Bologna Declaration,” a document that envisaged a unifi ed European area for higher education. Its enforcement added to the urgency of the meeting in Rotterdam. However, this meeting would not be remembered for the unusually broad rep- resentation of nationalities or for its political timeliness. What would be remem- bered was an incident which took place shortly after the audience had been invited to join in the discussion. Somebody had raised a question about classroom analysis of twentieth-century music, a recurring topic among music theory teach- ers: whereas the music of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries lent itself to general analytical methodologies, the extremely diverse repertoire of the twen- tieth century seemed only to invite ad hoc approaches; how could the analysis of 1. -

Re- cently, Harrison (1965) solved this problem, but without considering automata with initial and final states. With the aid of the Power Group Enumeration Theorem (Harary and Palmer, 1965, 1966) the entire problem can be handled routinely. The method involves a confrontation of several different operations on permutation groups. To set the stage, we enumerate ordered pairs of functions with respect to the product of two power groups. Finite automata are then concisely defined as certain ordered pah's of functions. We review the enumeration of automata in the natural setting of the power group, and then extend this result to enumerate automata with initial and terminal states. I. Introduction The Axiom of Choice states that for any family of nonempty disjoint sets, there exists a set that consists of exactly one element from each element of the family. It seems strange at first that such an innocuous sounding idea can be so powerful and controversial, but it certainly is both. To understand why, we will start by looking at some statements that are equivalent to the axiom of choice. Many of these equivalences are very useful, and we devote much time to one, namely, that every vector space has a basis. We go on from there to see a few more applications of the Axiom of Choice and its equivalents, and finish by looking at some of the reasons why the Axiom of Choice is so controversial. -

Definitions and Nondefinability in Geometry1 James T. Smith Abstract. Around 1900 some noted mathematicians published works developing geometry from its very beginning. They wanted to supplant approaches, based on Euclid’s, which han- dled some basic concepts awkwardly and imprecisely. They would introduce precision re- quired for generalization and application to new, delicate problems in higher mathematics. Their work was controversial: they departed from tradition, criticized standards of rigor, and addressed fundamental questions in philosophy. This paper follows the problem, Which geo- metric concepts are most elementary? It describes a false start, some successful solutions, and an argument that one of those is optimal. It’s about axioms, definitions, and definability, and emphasizes contributions of Mario Pieri (1860–1913) and Alfred Tarski (1901–1983). By fol- lowing this thread of ideas and personalities to the present, the author hopes to kindle interest in a fascinating research area and an exciting era in the history of mathematics. 1. INTRODUCTION. Around 1900 several noted mathematicians published major works on a subject familiar to us from school: developing geometry from the very beginning. They wanted to supplant the established approaches, which were based on Euclid’s, but which handled awkwardly and imprecisely some concepts that Euclid did not treat fully. They would present geometry with the precision required for general- ization and applications to new, delicate problems in higher mathematics—precision beyond the norm for most elementary classes. Work in this area was controversial: these mathematicians departed from tradition, criticized previous standards of rigor, and addressed fundamental questions in logic and philosophy of mathematics.2 After establishing background, this paper tells a story about research into the ques- tion, Which geometric concepts are most elementary?
