This study is the most comprehensive analysis of cucujoid taxa to date, with DNA sequence data sampled from eight genes (four nuclear, four mitochondrial) for 384 coleopteran taxa, including exemplars of 35 (of 37) families and 289 genera of Cucujoidea. Maximum-likelihood analyses of these data present many significant relationships, some proposed previously and some novel. -
Phylogenetic Systematics of the Cerylonid Series of Cucujoidea
PHYLOGENETIC SYSTEMATICS OF THE CERYLONID SERIES OF CUCUJOIDEA (COLEOPTERA) by JAMES A. ROBERTSON (Under the Direction of Joseph V. McHugh) ABSTRACT We conduct a large-scale phylogenetic investigation of the Cerylonid Series (C.S.) of Cucujoidea, a diverse group of cucujoid beetles comprising 9,600 species classified in eight families, using morphological data (76 taxa ! 147 adult and larval characters), molecular data (341 taxa ! 9 genes: 18S, 28S, H3, 12S, 16S, COI, COII, CAD and ArgK) and a combination of the two datasets. In total, our analyses suggest the following: the C.S. is a monophyletic group based on both morphological and molecular evidence; the superfamily Cucujoidea is paraphyletic with respect to the remaining superfamilies in the series Cucujiformia; the C.S. represents a unique clade within Cucujiformia and should be recognized as its own supferfamily, Coccinelloidea, within the series; Byturidae and Biphyllidae should be transferred to Cleroidea; the C.S. families Corylophidae, Coccinellidae, Latridiidae, and Discolomatidae, are monophyletic; Cerylonidae, Endomychidae, and Bothrideridae are paraphyletic. Bothrideridae is split into two distinct families comprising the former Bothriderinae (as Bothrideridae) and the other including the remaining subfamilies (as Teredidae); the cerylonid subfamily Euxestinae is included within Teredidae; the new concept of Cerylonidae includes the following subfamilies: Ceryloninae, Ostomopsinae, Murmidiinae, Discolomatinae and Loeblioryloninae (inserte sedis); the status of the putative -

Two new species of lycoperdinine Endomychidae from Philippines, Mindanao, are described and illustrated. These are a new species of Amphisternus Germar, 1843: Amphisternus alberti sp. nov., and a new species of Gerstaeckerus Tomaszewska, 2005: Gerstaeckerus rufi plagiatus sp. nov. Both species belong to Amphisternus-group of Lycoperdininae. The keys to the species of Amphister- nus and Gerstaeckerus (= Engonius Gerstaecker, 1857) originally proposed by Strohecker are modi¿ ed and updated. Key words. Coleoptera, Cucujoidea, Endomychidae, Lycoperdininae, new species, key to species, taxonomy, Philippines, Oriental Region Introduction The subfamily Lycoperdininae is the largest group of the primarily mycophagous cucujoid family Endomychidae (SHOCKLEY et al. 2009a,b). It contains over 700 described species world- wide and is regarded as well-de¿ ned and monophyletic. The monophyly of this subfamily was con¿ rmed by phylogenetic analyses based on morphology (TOMASZEWSKA 2000, 2005) and on molecular markers (ROBERTSON et al. 2008). TOMASZEWSKA (2005) recognized 38 genera divided into ¿ ve generic groups in Lycoper- dininae. Since then ¿ ve new genera of Lycoperdininae have been described: two, Stroheckeria Tomaszewska, 2006 and Humerus Chang & Ren, 2013, from the Oriental Region (TOMAS- ZEWSKA 2006, CHANG & REN 2013), and three, Hylaperdina Tomaszewska, 2012, Chileanus Tomaszewska, 2012, and Atopomychus Tomaszewska & Szawaryn, 2013, from the Neotropical Region (TOMASZEWSKA 2012, TOMASZEWSKA & SZAWARYN 2013). -

SYSTEMATICS OF LADYDIRD BEETLES (COLEOPTERA: COCCINELLIDAE) by JOSÉ ADRIANO GIORGI (Under the Direction of Joseph V. McHugh) ABSTRACT Despite the familiarity and economic significance of Coccinellidae, the family has thus far escaped analysis by rigorous phylogenetic methods. As a result, the internal classification remains unstable and there is no framework with which to interpret evolutionary events within the family. We analyzed coccinellid phylogeny using a combined dataset of seven genes: 12S rDNA, 16S rDNA, 18S rDNA, 28S rDNA, Cytochrome oxidase I, Cytochrome oxidase II, and Histone 3. The entire dataset consists of 6565 aligned nucleotide sites, 1305 of which are parsimony informative. Our study included 20% of the generic-level diversity and 80% of the tribal-level diversity and 100% previously recognized subfamilies. We analyzed the dataset using parsimony and Bayesian methods. Our study supports the monophyly of Coccinellidae; however, most of the traditional subfamilies are not supported as monophyletic. Three recently proposed, but not widely accepted, subfamilies are recognized. A new subfamily is proposed to accommodate Monocoryni. We recognize eight subfamilies of Coccinellidae: Microweiseinae, Monocorynae (new subfamily), Coccinellinae, Chilocorinae, Sticholotidinae, Scymninae, Exoplectrinae, and Hyperaspidinae. The circumscription of Hyperaspidinae (Hyperaspidini Mulsant, Brachiacanthini Mulsant and Selvadiini Gordon) is extended to accommodate Platynaspidini Redtenbacher and Aspidimerini Mulsant. The tribe Coccinellini Latreille is paraphyletic with respect to Tytthaspidini Mulsant (syn. nov.) and Halyziini Mulsant (confirmed status). The tribes Noviini Mulsant, Cryptognathini Casey, Poriini Mulsant, and Diomini Gordon are treated as incertae sedis. The relationship between some of the subfamilies and the placement of several tribes remain ambiguous. We also utilized the phylogenetic hypothesis to provide an evolutionary perspective on the feeding preferences of coccinellids. -
Morphology, Phylogeny and Classification of Adult Endomychidae (Coleoptera: Cucujoidea)

Detailed morphology of 36 exemplar genera representing 12 recently recognized subfamilies is presented. Cladistic analy- sis was accomplished based on 50 taxa (47 genera from Endomychidae and Coccinellidae the ingroup, and 3 genera from Helotidae, Brachypteridae and Protocucujidae the outgroups) coded for 40 adult, morphological characters. Based on the analysis, a phylogeny of the family is hypothesized. Results of the analysis suggest that the Endomychidae form a monophyletic taxon, which may be divided into 12 subfamilies: Danascelinae (subfam. nov.), Xenomycetinae, Endomychinae, Anamorphinae, Merophysiinae, Lycoperdininae, Stenotarsinae, Epipocinae, Eupsilobiinae, Pleganophorinae, Mycetaeinae and Leiestinae. Short diagnoses for the family and subfamilies, as well as a key to the subfamilies are provided. The following two new, sub- family synonyms are proposed: Anamorphinae Strohecker, 1953 (=Acritosomatinae Pakaluk and lipiñski, 1995) and Merophysiinae Seidlitz, 1872 (=Holoparamecinae Seidlitz, 1888). Adamia gen. nov. (type species: A. mexicana sp. nov.) and Erotendomychus lawrencei sp. nov., are described. Type species are designated for the following genera: Niteta Weise, 1890 (N. quatuordecimpunctata Weise, 1890), Oediarthrus Gerstaecker, 1858 (O. natalensis Gerstaecker, 1858) and Stenotarsoides Csiki, 1900 (S. quadrimaculatus Csiki, 1900).
