Our members continue a lifetime of learning by contributing to a program rich in content, shared interests, and life experiences. OLLI at UNLV offers special events, interest groups, and other member activities in addition to regularly scheduled study group courses. Our classes are Contents purely for enjoyment—there are no tests, grades, or credits. Prior college experience is not required, only a desire to join your peers in the joy of learning. Each of our study groups is led by OLLI members who bring a lifetime of personal and professional experience to their classrooms.     REDOUBLES & JORDAN 2NT CONVENTION by BARBARA SEAGRAM There are several uses for the word "Redouble". For now, we are only going to give you the simple version of the commonest use of the Redouble. When your partner opens the bidding, showing at least 13 points, if the guy on your right says "Double", then he also has at least 13 points. That already is a chunk of the deck's high card points accounted for. If you in that next seat (the partner of the opening bidder) have 10 or more H.C.P. it is now very important to tell partner that you have those missing points. That way she will know that the guy on your left is marked with 0-5 points only. N E S W 1H Dbl Redbl By saying "Redouble", you are really saying to partner (opening bidder) : "Partner, you opened the bidding and our opponent made a take-out double, but don't worry about them, this hand belongs to us and most of the points on this hand are held by our side." Note that you may have trump support or may not have trump support; the Redouble merely says" I have 10 or more H.C.P." Here's how it all proceeds after this: The one on your left (L.H.O. left hand opponent or West as above) is now marked with very little. He knows that his side is in trouble. He will bid if he has a 4 card suit that is not the opponents' suit. This will tell his partner that he has a four card suit which may provide a safe haven if their side has to play the hand because at least they will have lots of trumps, if not many points.

    THE LANGUAGE OF BIDDING Language is so very important. If you go to South America and ask how to get to the church ¿Dónde está la iglesia? is what you should say. If instead you ask: ¿Cuánto dinero hace usted? You have just asked someone how much money they make. If partner opens 1 Spade and you have 13 points and you now bid 2 Spades, she will think you only have 6-9 points. That is what you have communicated to her. In bridge, we bid. This is also a form of communication. We advertise what we have in our hand, using a vocabulary of only 15 words. It is imperative that we use a language that partner will understand. You both have to be on the same page! Don’t race in to play bridge at the last minute without any discussion. Partner cannot read your mind. You have to discuss style and bidding agreements. If you bid just on gut instinct (bidding by the seat of your pants), it simply cannot work. Here are some examples of how the train can go off the tracks. What would you bid with the following hands: (RHO stands for Right Hand Opponent) 1. 1S by RHO & you have Answers to quiz: AQ5 K76 A987 QJ8 1. If you were the opener, you would open with 1NT. As an overcaller, 2. 1S by RHO & you have you will now overcall 1NT. This shows 15-17 HCP (some believe 15-18 AQ5 KQ7 AQ98 QJ8 HCP…either is fine) and a stopper in opponent's suit.

You did it. So many people played at the club last year that the all-time annual attendance record was broken. We had a total of 2,292 tables, up 8 percent from the previous year. It is hard to believe but our club had the SECOND highest attendance in the state of Michigan! As was predicted in the last edition of The Shuffler, Bernadette Burkhardt and Allison White started teaching bridge lessons to Petoskey Middle School students last fall. They were ably assisted by Eva Walker, Janice Smolinski, Jeanette Aspenleiter, and Marsha Harrison. Nancy Nardizzi provided wonderful cookies and brownies which the students loved! We are grateful to all of them for their efforts in introducing a younger generation to the great game of bridge. In fact, it was so successful that lessons continued in January and February. But wait, there’s more! We were approached by the Petoskey library director, Val Meyerson (who used to play bridge at the club with her husband, Tom Johnson) to see if we would be willing to teach bridge lessons at the library. Allison immediately picked up the ball and ran with it. The concept is that the library and North Central Michigan College will offer a mini-course of beginner/refresher bridge lessons. The lessons will be taught by Allison and Bernadette at the library on Friday afternoons in May and June.
