Visual Arts: Projects / Events / Exhibitions MEDIA RELEASE / NEW EXHIBITION 'Slow Objects' 21 Woodlands Terrace, Glasgow, G3 6DF 14 October – 17 December 2017 Exhibition preview on Saturday 14 October 2017, 3-5pm Exhibition Open: Wednesday – Sunday 12 noon-5pm and until 7pm on Thursday Edith Dekyndt, 'Slow Object 02', 1997/2016. The Common Guild is delighted to announce details of the next exhibition in this, our tenth anniversary year. ‘Slow Objects’ is an exhibition that brings together the work of three outstanding artists whose work explores the relationship between material and process, time and transformation. The exhibition includes a selection of new and recent works by Vanessa Billy (CH), Edith Dekyndt (BE) and Erin Shirreff (CA) three artists seldom seen in the UK. Including video, photography, sculpture and installation, ‘Slow Objects’ examines the way we perceive objects. Vanessa Billy is known for sculptural works that utilise a wide range of familiar substances including waste materials and discarded objects that suggest human activity and our relationship with the world around us. Her practice is grounded in the physical qualities of these materials, providing a base from which to explore alchemical processes and cycles of energy and activity. Edith Dekyndt’s practice includes a wide range of materials including salt, sugar, bread, milk, lemons, earth and blood. Familiar materials are used in unfamiliar ways, testing substances through a variety of natural processes – such as fermentation, absorption, desiccation and decay. Traces of these experimental processes are recorded in the work, which ranges from video and sculpture, to performance and installation. -

Binning Gallery Vancouver, BC Nancy Holt April 19 to June 16, 2013 Alvin Balkind Gallery and off -site Raymond Boisjoly Opening receptions: Continues until June 16, 2013 Thursday, April 18, 7–10pm Window Spaces and off -site Erin Shirreff Erin Shirreff’s solo exhibition at the Contemporary Art Gallery will be the first presentation dedicated exclusively to the artist’s Pictures film and video work. It may seem a somewhat unexpected focus April 19 to June 16, 2013 given Shirreff’s definition of herself as a sculptor. And yet her B. C. Binning Gallery investigation into the language and perception of materiality has less to do with the presentation of physical objects than specifically to that of our experience of forms — how sharing the same space with a ‘thing’ varies from looking at its representation. Shirreff is known for reproducing sculpture as images or making sculpture that distils the essence of a photograph, playing these two elements against one another as a means to prompt and test the viewer’s response. In Knives (2008) for example, she modeled a variety of knife-like forms from Plasticine, subsequently presenting them as a series of black and white photographs; her most recent sculptures made from ash and cement resemble photographs, their surfaces giving way to reveal themselves as planes an inch thick as we move around them. Such preoccupation with the properties and potency of sculpture in relation to photographic reproduction grew out of Shirreff’s consideration of the work of Tony Smith; New Piece from 1966 made from black painted steel, in particular held a fascination, so much so that she made a pilgrimage to see it in person. -

Susan Hobbs Press Release For immediate release: June 3, 2015 Media contact: (416) 504.3699, [email protected] A kind of graphic unconscious Toronto, ON – opening on Saturday, 4 July from 2 to 4 p.m. and continuing through to 15 August, Susan Hobbs Gallery is pleased to present A kind of graphic unconscious, a group show organized by Moire. Taking the moiré effect as cue through the convergent practices of Liz Deschenes, Eileen Quinlan, Erin Shirreff, and Erika Vogt — this exhibition considers how a relationship between the material and immaterial becomes permissible through the crossing of singular paths. As an effect, moiré is the perception of a distinct third pattern which occurs when two similar patterns are superimposed slightly askew. By offering access to this latent pattern the immateriality of two dimensions shift to reveal a previously indiscernible three dimensional space. Due to their potential opposition to each other, these patterns can be employed to either obscure content or increase its evidence; thus moiré can be understood as “a kind of graphic unconscious: a basic condition of blur, out of which temporary effects of sharpness are occasionally won.”1 The paradox of the effect is how it uniquely exists in physical space and time, yet also in the space of representation and the image. Liz Deschenes’ work often focuses on the ethereal qualities of light, manifesting as imprints on photosensitive paper or as reflections by way of densely saturated surfaces. Her constructions, sometimes created without the use of a camera, often have a strong phenomenological component that is perhaps most evident in her Moiré series. -
