Costa Barcelona English Costa Barcelona L’Alt Penedès, El Baix Llobregat, El Garraf, El Maresme, El Vallès Occidental and El Vallès Oriental are the six regions that make up the Costa Barcelona tourism brand, an area which is defined and guided by its relationship with the sea but in which the land, plains, gentle mountain ranges and Mediterranean vegetation also form an essential part of life. Sea and mountain, cities and culture www.barcelonaesmoltmes.cat A fairly densely populated area, with numerous large cities and major transport routes, which also benefits from large expanses of lush natural landscape, as well as vineyards and other crops, and preserves numerous examples of cultural and religious heritage that stand as a testament to its long and rich history. The proximity to Barcelona has undoubtedly exerted an influence over the six regions in the past, as it continues to do today. However, each has its own unique identity, way of life and of doing things, its places of business, of leisure, commercial hubs, long-established festivals and cuisine to delight the palate, replete with local recipes and regional produce. An area that, on top of its summertime draw for those seeking sun and sea, has more than enough attractions to warrant a visit, short or long, all year round: Modernisme, or Catalan Art Nouveau, is found in abundance, be it in former summer residences, residential or industrial buildings; wine tourism, particularly in the regions of L’Alt Penedès and El Maresme (DO Alella); El Garraf, a region that tells us about those who went to make their fortunes in the Americas, Los Indianos, as well as the artists who gathered there a little over a century ago; towns where you can opt to kick back and relax or look to improve your health thanks to the spa waters found there; museums covering a wide variety of subject areas and first-rate music festivals; fairs; markets; conferences; and more.

ABSTRACT The weir of l’Estanyol of Santa Fe del Montseny was a necessary hydraulic infrastructure to develop the touristic industry in Santa Fe Valley. It was built together with the Gran Hotel. The weir was used to generate electric power by means of a pipeline that reached la Fabriqueta, the power plant station located at the tail of the Santa Fe reservoir, built downstream some time later.

PALAU DE LA MÚSICA CATALANA < BARCELONA. CASA BATLLÓ Discovering Modernisme in Catalonia The term Modernisme is used in Catalonia to refer to the large-scale artistic movement which developed at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th. Its aim was to update traditional fgurative repertories, architectural typologies and decorative elements to bring them into line with new techniques, new industrial materials and contemporary artistic feeling. During its heyday, around the turn of the 20th century, it took the form of a decorative fashion based on curved, asymmetrical lines and colourful foral ornamentation. These features were especially found in architecture, but also in the decorative and applied arts: stained glass, ceramics, iron and other metals, and furniture, as well as in other felds of design such as jewellery, posters, and printing.

Capítulo 17 Chemical elements in superficial sediment CAPÍTULO 17 CHEMICAL ELEMENTS IN SUPERFICIAL SEDIMENTS OF FIVE RESERVOIRS IN THE CATALONIA AND ARAGON REGIONS (SPAIN): IS THERE AN ANTHROPOGENIC CONTRIBUTION? Marcelo Pompêo1, Joan Pere Casas Ruiz2, Viviane Moschini-Carlos3, Rafael Marcé4, Paula Yuri Nishimura1, Joan Armengol2, Pilar López2 1 University of São Paulo, Institute of Biology, Department of Ecology, São Paulo, Brazil 2 University of Barcelona, Department of Ecology, Barcelona, Spain 3 State University of São Paulo (UNESP), Sorocaba Campus, Sorocaba, Brazil 4 Catalan Institute for Water Research (ICRA), Girona, Spain E-mail: [email protected] ABSTRACT Evaluation was made of the sediments of five Spanish reservoirs, four in the Catalonia region (the Sau, Susqueda, Foix, and Santa Fe reservoirs), and one in the Aragon region (the Barasona reservoir). The sediments were collected in 2011. At the Barasona, Sau, and Foix reservoirs, the sediments were obtained at three sites, one in the upper region of the reservoir, at the entrance of the main river, one in the zone near the dam, and another in the central region, between the river and dam regions. At the Santa Fe and Susqueda reservoirs, the sediments were obtained only near the dam. The superficial sediment was sampled with a 400 cm2 Lenz type dredge. In the laboratory, the sediment samples were dried at 60 oC and ground in a glass mortar. The concentrations of different chemical species were determined by X-ray fluorescence and by a microwave digestion procedure (using Teflon bottles with HCl and HNO3). Measurements were made of the following species: Al2O3, P2O5, K2O, CaO, SiO2, TiO2, MnO, Fe2O3, MgO, Na2O, Ag, As, Ba, Br, Cd, Ce, Co, Cr, Cs, Cu, Ga, Hf, I, La, Mo, Nb, Nd, Ni, Pb, Rb, Sb, Sc, Se, Sm, Sn, Sr, Ta, Te, Th, Tl, U, V, W, Y, Yb, Zn, and Zr.

She began her scientificcareer studying the bryoflora of the Montseny massif Abstract – An annotated check-list of the bryophytes of the Montseny massif (northeastern Iberian Peninsula) is presented, based on literature and herbarium records revision as well as collections made by the authors. Atotal of 352 taxa were recorded, out of which three were hornworts, 80 liverworts and 269 mosses. Intensive surveys of original locations of threatened, extinct and protected species in the massif were carried out. Species whose local populations became extinct were those with astrong preference for wet and oligotrophic habitats, such habitats have been severely damaged in recent decades. We discuss possible strategies for effective conservation of those bryophytes whose local population have suffered adecline, like targeted legistation and establishing specificprotected areas. Biodiversity /conservation /hornworts /liverworts /mosses /Mediterranean INTRODUCTION The Montseny massif is located in the northeastern Iberian Peninsula, Catalonia, Spain, 41°43’-41°51’N latitude, 2°14’-2°33’E longitude.
