TADASHI KAWAMATA B. 1953, Hokkaido, Japan Lives and works in Tokyo and Paris. Over the Influence and kamel mennour are pleased to present Nest and Tree Hut, an exhibion of two dozen works from the internaonally renowned arst Tadashi Kawamata. The exhibion, which marks Kawamata's debut solo show in Hong Kong, will open on March 26 and remain on view through May 4, 2018. An opening recepon for the arst will be held on March 25, from 5 to 7PM. Since the early 1980's, the Japanese-born Tadashi Kawamata's ambious site-specific public installaons have temporarily transformed buildings around the world. Derived from simple jeVsoned materials, such as reclaimed lumber and old chairs, his in situ wooden orchestraons alter viewers' percepons of their well-known surroundings. Over the past decade, his always unexpected construcons include an ongoing series of nests and tree huts, small wooden structures which may evoke childhood memories or suggest transient shelters built by the homeless. Exhibited for the first me, Nest and Tree Hut will feature a considerable selecon of Kawamata's exquisitely craYed maqueZes from the celebrated series. Born in 1953 in Hokkaidō, Japan, Tadashi Kawamata lives and works in Tokyo and Paris. His work has been widely shown in major internaonal instuons such as Made in Cloister, Napoli (2017), the Thurgau Art Museum, Switzerland (2014), the Centre Pompidou in Paris (2010) and Metz (2016), the Toyosu Dome, in Tokyo (2010-2013), the HKW in Berlin (2009), the Art Tower Mito in Mito (2001), the Serpenne Gallery in London (1997), the Artpace San Antonio (1998), the MACBA in Barcelona (1996); and also during numerous art biennales such as the Venice Biennale (1982), the documenta 8 and IX (1987; 1992), the internaonal Biennale of São Paulo (1987), the Contemporary Art Biennale in Lyon (1993), the Skulptur Projekte Münster (1997), the Sydney Biennale (1998), the Jerusalem Biennale (1999), the Echigo-Tsumari Art. -

Artist‟s simple clean-look installations demonstrate his solid expertise in the field of architecture, reconstructing all sorts of everyday places into a baffling and deceptive visual maze. Viewers can walk into a horizontally built elevator shaft, stay dry in a swimming pool or spot a window up in the air. Artist employs his sophisticated design and technical devices to achieve impossible movie-like surrealistic scenes in real life, challenging our common sense and further delivering an altered reality. Erlich likes to delude his viewers with usually the very familiar scenes, such as an open window, staircase, subway, hair salon, changing room and living room etc. that everybody would come cross in their daily routine. However, confronted by artist‟s highly manipulated space, viewers are amazed, physical laws are suspended, and surprises are intermitted with a sense of humour. One of his most acclaimed projects, the Swimming Pool, extensively exhibited in many prestigious venues like MoMA PS1and the 49th Venice Biennale etc, exemplifies his borrowing the very commonplace. Erlich constructed a full-size swimming pool including a deck and ladder, horizontally divided by a large piece of acrylic suspending water above it. Viewers approaching from the upper level would be astonished by the scene of others beneath the surface of the water standing, walking and breathing as freely as on the ground. -

LEANDRO ERLICH Leandro Erlich, born to an Argentine architectural family in 1973, is widely known for his intriguing optical illusions that lure his befuddled viewers to explore. His staged spaces can always turn the most assured situation upside down. With a single gesture to the architectural structure, Erlich transforms all sorts of everyday places into a baffling and deceptive visual mazes, challenging people’s common sense, delivering the viewer into an alternative reality. The uncanny and sinister aesthetics of film directors Alfred Hitchcock, Roman Polanski, Luis Buñel and David Lynch directly influence Erlich’s artistic rendering, while the fictional world of the Argentine writer Jorge Louis Borges is thoroughly absorbed into the artist’s imagination. Leandro Erlich has exhibited in many prestigious institutions and Biennales, such as MoMA P.S.1 and the Whitney Biennial in New York, Museo de Arte Contemporanea in Rome, Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, Tsumari Triennale in Japan, Centre George Pompidou and Palais de Tokyo in Paris, and the 49th and 51st Venice Biennale, among many others. Erlich was awarded the Eliza Prize in 1998, and the Joan Mitchell Foundation Award Unesco Prize during the 2001 Istanbul Biennial. Erlich’s works have entered numerous private and public collections, including the Museum of Modern Art, Buenos Aires; The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; Tate Modern, London; Musee d’Art Moderne, Paris; 21st Century Museum of Art Kanazawa, Japan; MACRO, Rome; FNAC, France, and more.
