Have administrative responsibility of overseeing the largest sequence in the School of Journalism, including handling magazine internships and advising the campus magazine, burntORANGE. 1993 – Present Lecturer in Journalism Teach classes on magazine management, reporting, writing and feature writing. Oversee the multi-section basic news writing and editing class and spearhead the development of a uniform syllabus each semester. 1989 - 1993 Magazine Consultant Specialize in media management / operations and consult on strategies for established and startup publications, including reviewing business and operational plans, publishing viability, etc. 1988 – present Entrepreneur Founded and launched prototype city/family magazine as test market for possible national launch. Oversaw editorial, advertising and production. Handled budgets, finance and personnel matters. 1985-1988 Vice President and Editorial Director Executive Business Media, Westbury, N.Y. 1 Day-to-day editorial and overall corporate managerial responsibilities for international magazine publishing firm producing wide variety of specialized hard- news publications in the U.S., Europe and Asia. 1973-1984 U.S. Military Edited SASCOM Sentinel, military newspaper for soldiers and officers of the Special Army Support Command in Frankfurt, Germany. 1970 – 1972 2 Significant consulting, media work (1998-present) (More comprehensive list highlighted elsewhere in Vita) Have done management and/or full evaluations for many magazines, such as Texas Highways, Texas Parks and Wildlife, Texas Music, Southwest Passages, etc. Devised magazine course book, instructor’s guide and instructional material for Global Workshop for Tenaris University in Buenos Aires, Argentina. 2009 – 2010 Taught classes on writing as part of University of Texas multi-college workshops (journalism, advertising, business school) for ExxonMobil corporate communication personnel. 2010 Gave keynote talk, “Can Journalism be Saved,” for Society of Professional Journalists in Austin at the AT&T Conference Center at UT. 2010 Serve as official or informal advisor for several Austin magazines, including: AUSTIN WOMAN and TEXAS MUSIC (Serve as advisory board member 1999 • present) Served as expert witness and prepared trial reports for national cases involving Ladies’ Home Journal and Sun World. Gave seminar on strategic planning to top management of one of nation’s largest circulation daily papers, the San Antonio Express-News. Gave keynote talk for International Regional Magazine Association annual convention in San Antonio. Co-presented a series of “How to Start Magazines” seminars over several years for SPJ, with John Mack Carter, president of Hearst Magazines. Co-presented seminar on “Starting a Magazine on a Shoestring” with John Mack Carter at Stanford University’s Professional Publishing Course. Presented seminar on magazines and newspapers at City and Regional Magazine Association conference in San Antonio. Presented two-day seminar on writing, reporting and overall magazine content for Vance Publishing Corporation of Kansas City. Served as consultant to D Magazine’s Custom Publishing group. Gave two day comprehensive workshop on reporting, writing, interviewing, etc., for Granite Publications, a Texas newspaper publisher. Have spoken on media skills to numerous newspaper and magazine groups over the years, including regional and national Conventions of Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) and Folio: Magazine. Moderated panel of top journalism authors during Texas Book Festival at State Capitol Senate Chamber: Bob Rivard, Seth Mnookin, Rob Boynton, John Friedman. 3 Served as a national judge for Freedom Communication’s newspaper editorial evaluations. Acquired $50,000 in funding from the University (of Texas) Co-op from 2002 – Present for burntORANGE magazine. Acquired $3,000 in funding from the University (of Texas) Co-op to pay winning designers for 40 ACRES. 4 UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS Courses taught Journalism 131K/ Magazine Internship course Journalism 315/ News Media Writing and Editing. Introductory consent writing class with intensive writing lab required of all students. Journalism 320 / Intermediate Reporting Basic reporting class required of all students. Journalism 331K/ Magazine Internship course Journalism 327/ Feature Writing Emphasis on reporting and writing features and finding markets for publishable articles. Journalism 347 / Magazine Management Required class for graduation. Designed and implemented new course in 1989 and have taught it ever since. Class requires students to study all aspects of magazine operations --- including the business side, advertising, circulation, production and finance --- and prepare a full business plan, with financials for a proposed new magazine of their own choice. Class also produces award-winning campus magazine, burntOrange. Journalism 349 / Magazine Production Actual lab-type class that works on actual publications and projects, including burntOrange. Class also studies local and national magazines and produces projects for the School. Journalism 349 / Writing for Magazines and Specialty Publications Journalism 374 / Advanced Feature Writing Class focuses on longer-form writing with heavy emphasis on getting published. Journalism 379/ 389 Independent Study Selected individual topics for both graduate and undergraduate students taught one-on-one outside of regular class schedule to enlarge departmental offerings. Other classes Senior Fellows Class / Investigative Reporting Techniques Taught class for the College Honor’s program on how investigators (including journalism, law enforcement, FBI, Secret Service, private detectives, etc.) are able to acquire information on the public: 2001 Journalism 348/ Writing For Public Relations Required consent introductory writing course with intensive writing lab 5 component and teaching assistant. (Public Relations Sequence) Journalism 331K/Internship course (Public Relations Sequence) 6 Journalism-related activities (college or school) burntORANGE Serve as main faculty adviser for 48-page, four-color magazine for University of Texas students: 2000 – present Future of Magazines Panel Developed and set-up magazine panel in LBJ Room --- The Future of Magazines: The View From The Top--- featuring Evan Smith, president and editor of Texas Monthly, and Wick Allison, founder and CEO of D Magazine. (Dallas). Panel drew 50-60 local and UT magazine editors and students: March 2009 Explore UT Oversee yearly “How to be a Magazine Cover Boy or Girl” as part of College of Communication program for Explore UT: 2005- present. Fresh Thoughts Served as Faculty Editorial Adviser for magazine idea from Dean Rod Hart, focusing on the college’s research function: 2008 Ideas@Work Served as Faculty Editorial Adviser and helped with copy editing and rewrite for new college magazine idea from Dean Rod Hart, focusing on people who have come back to UT to teach: 2010. Faculty Internship meetings Took part in mid-semester internships meetings with faculty, students and CCS personnel: 2007- present. Faculty Contact UT Career Exploration Center: 2009 Magazine Sequence Brochure Magazine Production class produced brochure as class project for magazine sequence: Spring 2009 Fader magazine National music magazine, based in NYC, used my Magazine Management class to review one of their current issues and then mentioned UT’s role in an issue: January/February 2009 Eyes of Texas alma mater story 7 Story that ran in burntORANGE magazine was picked up by the ABC Campus Bureau: Spring 2009 Media Management Panel Judge for Prof. George Sylvie’s Media Management class poster competition: December 2008 Spring Break in NYC Periodically advise College of Communication’s Career Services Division on setting up magazines for students to visit during their Spring Break trip. Accompanied group in March of 2006. 40 ACRES Served as faculty adviser for twice-yearly campus entertainment newsletter written and designed by journalism students: 1990 - 1997 40 ACRES OF FUN Served as adviser for four-page campus newsletter written and designed by J-320 / Reporting students. Funded by Campus Copies: 2002 ABA Litigation Panel Class students took part, plus covered a litigation task force on Justice in America at the Law School: 2006 8 Town Hall Meetings Have represented the Magazine Sequence each semester for School of Journalism Town Hall meetings for at least 15 years.
