Background A nomination under the title “Mining Cultural Landscape Erzgebirge/Krušnohoří Erzgebirge/Krušnohoří” was submitted by the States (Germany/Czechia) Parties in January 2014 for evaluation as a cultural landscape under criteria (i), (ii), (iii) and (iv). The No 1478 nomination dossier was withdrawn by the States Parties following the receipt of the interim report. At the request of the States Parties, an ICOMOS Advisory process was carried out in May-September 2016. Official name as proposed by the States Parties The previous nomination dossier consisted of a serial Erzgebirge/Krušnohoří Mining Region property of 85 components. The countryside in the Czech-German-Polish Triangle at the begin- ning of the 1990s was seriously damaged by a high concentration of mining and industry sites (dumps, mine shafts, extensive erosion from surface mining) as well as suffering from one of the highest emission densities in Europe. The con- sequences for nature were se-vere (forest damages, water contamination etc.). In view of these problems, cross-border development concepts were drawn up, helping to signiﬁ cantly improve the environ-mental situation. The IOER is cur- rently evaluating the development of the environ-mental situation from 1990 to 2006, looking at such issues as landscape and nature pro-tection and the effects of the cross-border collaboration. Some results are presented in this article. It sends visitors on a long, winding underground route that for the most part looks and feels like an actual mine. The exhibit casts a wide net: early modern mining, coal mining, lignite open-pit mining, and mining for ores and salt are all part of the tour, with ore processing and refining making for the grand finale. It is not an exhibit for the claustrophobic, as the path is rather narrow at times, and visitors are expected to complete the entire tour—there are only emergency exits between entrance and finish. However, most visitors enjoy the exhibit, and employees of the Deutsches Museum are accustomed to inquiries as to when they last took the tour.

International Mine Water Association Annual Conference 2012 Remediation strategy for a waste rock dump at a former uranium leach operation Marcus Frenzel, Andrea Schramm, Carsten Wedekind, Michael Paul, Ulf Jenk Wismut GmbH, 09117 Chemnitz, Jagdschänkenstraße 29, Germany Abstract The Schüsselgrund mine waste dump at Wismut’s Königstein mine site (Saxony, Germany) has been in operation since 1965. Due to the acidity of the leached mine waste as well as the acid generation potential of the sulfide bearing non-leached low-grade ore, the dump shows acidic seepage. Since the dump does not contain a liner at its base, groundwater monitoring shows significant influence of the dump at the underlying cretaceous aquifer regarding radio nuclide and trace metal concentrations. With regard to the remediation strategy neither relocation nor construction of a simple cover system turned out to be appropriate remediation options for the dump. Therefore, an optimized cover approach was chosen in order to both minimize the infiltration rate and improve the seepage quality. First measurement results of soil moisture and hydrochemical observation systems at the cover show positive effects regarding both the water balance and the seepage quality. Introduction The Schüsselgrund mine waste dump at Wismut’s Königstein mine site is located in the Elbe Sandstone Mountains in the immediate vicinity of the Saxon Switzerland National Park. Established upon development of the Königstein uranium deposit in 1965 and extending across two dry valleys, the dump holds a total of some 4.5 million m³. In the area of valley fill its maximum thickness amounts to ca. 45 m. The dumped material inventory includes waste rock, low- grade ore both acid-leached and non-leached, as well as water treatment sludges, both dewatered and undewatered.

The first official definition of “Brownfield” is from U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. In General, "Brownfield site" means real property, the expansion, redevelopment, or reuse of which may be complicated by the presence or potential presence of a hazardous substance, pollutant, or contaminant”(Agency, 2011). In the United Kingdom and Australia, the term applies more generally to previous used land. No matter what’s the difference among these definitions, how to reuse the contaminant land is crucial for limited constructive lands nowadays. We should value every inch of land we have. Especially in contemporary China, many cities are facing the dilemma of lacking constructive land, but on the other hand, most “Brownfield Land” emerging with the economic structural transformation is still in abandon. Therefore the research of the Brownfield Land redevelopment in China should be of great significance. 2 Germany experience In recently years, Germany does lots of effort to reduce land consumption, which is important for low-carbon development. It indicates that Germany has proficient experience in Brownfield Land reuse, hence this paper will take a case study in East Germany, where the past Uranium mine now served as a leisure site for surrounding people. 2.1 Introduction The studied case was a former Uranium mine located in Ronneburg, which is a town in the district of Greiz, Thuringia, Germany.

The extended mine workings are to a large extent abandoned and flooded. Flooding of the Uranium Mine at Königstein/Saxony – Current Status and Monitoring Conducted

Paul Wismut GmbH, Jagdschänkenstraße 29, 09117 Chemnitz, Germany Abstract From 1984 on, at the Königstein site uranium was exclusively mined by in-situ leaching, in response to ever more decreasing ore grades. As a consequence of the applied sulfuric acid leach technology the affected geological formation exhibits a high acid potential, associated with high concentrations of easily soluble contaminants (metals, uranium included) in the mine water. In order to mitigate the environmental impact of the mine along the water pathway, remediation requires a controlled mine flooding scheme. Due to the specific hydro-geological and hydro-chemical conditions, monitoring of the groundwater quality is a key element of water monitoring at the site. The paper describes the approach of hydrochemical groundwater monitoring during mine flooding and presents solutions for representative groundwater monitoring under challenging sampling conditions in monitoring wells with depths down to 350 m below surface. The current status of mine flooding is outlined and selected monitoring results are highlighted. Altstandorte des Uranbergbaus in Sachsen Peter Diehl 28.8.2003 Seit der Wende ist die Wismut mit der Stillegung und Sanierung ihrer Uranbergbau-Standorte im Süden der ehemaligen DDR befaßt - einige Standorte bleiben jedoch außen vor. Bis zum Ende der DDR war das Uranbergbau-Unternehmen Wismut eine Sowjetisch-Deutsche Aktiengesellschaft (SDAG) gewesen, je zur Hälfte im Besitz der UdSSR und der DDR. Im Zuge der Deutschen Einheit hat die Deutsche Bundesregierung das Uranbergbau-Unternehmen Wismut AG komplett übernommen. Damit übernahm die Bundesregierung auch die Verpflichtung, für die Stillegung des unrentablen Unternehmens aufzukommen, da die Vorbesitzer keinerlei Rückstellungen dafür gemacht hatten. In der Folge stellte der Gesetzgeber die erforderlichen Mittel bereit - die Gesamtkosten wurden auf 13 Mrd. DM veranschlagt. Die Bundesregierung übernahm allerdings nur die Verantwortung für die Standorte der Wismut, die sich nach 1962 noch in deren Besitz befanden. Einige Alt-Standorte waren aber schon vorher von der Wismut nicht mehr benötigt und an die jeweiligen Gemeinden bzw. Kreise zurückgegeben worden. Für deren Sanierung mit geschätzten Kosten von insgesamt 900 Mio. DM sollten nun nach dem Willen der Bundesregierung die betroffenen Gemeinden bzw. Bundesländer - also insbesondere Sachsen - aufkommen. Jene sahen sich jedoch überwiegend nicht in der Lage, diese Verpflichtung zu übernehmen, so daß auch heute noch - 13 Jahre nach der Einheit - nach wie vor offen ist, ob, wann und von wem diese Standorte saniert werden. Die Alt-Standorte sind durchweg ausschließlich für die Uranversorgung für das sowjetische Atombombenprogramm genutzt worden und somit als Altlast des kalten Krieges einzustufen. Auch wenn diese Standorte heute den Gemeinden gehören, kann sich der Bund hier nicht aus seiner Verantwortung stehlen.
