Over the graveyard and through the tombs, Humphrey the Blue-Nosed Just hear the dreadful cries, Pumpkin The banshees howl, (Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer) The black cats yowl, Their shrieking fills the skies. Humphrey the blue-nosed pumpkin had a very obvious nose. Over the graveyard and through the tombs, And if you ever saw it, Where all the goblins meet, You may even say it shows. Witches and ghouls All of the other pumpkins, They are no fools, used to laugh and call him names. They all yell, “Trick or Treat.” They never let poor Humphrey play in any pumpkin games Over the graveyard and through the tombs, The jack-o-lanterns gleam. Then one foggy Halloween Eve, Bats fill the skies, the Great Pumpkin did say, With glowing eyes, “Humphrey, with your nose so blue, Horray! It’s Halloween! you’ll make all the ghosts say BOO!” (Repeat Last Two Verses) Then all the pumpkins loved him, and they shouted out with glee, Humphrey, the blue nosed pumpkin, You’ll go down in history!     The Great Pumpkin (Gene Narsete) Today is the Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed, aka All Souls Day. It is traditionally associated with the three days of “Allhallowtide” – which includes All Saints Day, Halloween (its vigil) and All Souls Day (the day after). For some, these days signal the beginning of the “Holiday Season.” Which brings us to tonight’s reflection. I often suggest that people consult their dictionaries, and meditate upon the similarities and differences among four words: ‘Faith’ and ‘Hope’ versus ‘Trust’ and ‘Belief’. The main difference between these pairs of terms is that one group is physically observable and measurable, while the other is not. Let’s look at them through an iconic autumn ritual: Halloween Night – when Linus awaits the arrival of the Great Pumpkin. At first glance, Linus is simply confusing the anticipation of one great icon (Santa Claus) with another (the Great Pumpkin). As Linus explains it, “Each year, the Great Pumpkin rises out of the pumpkin patch that he thinks is the most sincere. He’s gotta pick this one. He’s got to. I don’t see how a pumpkin patch can be more sincere than this one! You can look around and there’s not a sign of hypocrisy. Nothing but sincerity as far as the eye can see.” Did you catch Linus’ faith in the Coming, and the hope of its Reward? He is a virtuoso at every endeavor- at least in his daydreams atop his doghouse. He regards his master, Charlie Brown, as "that round-headed kid" who brings him his supper dish. He is fearless though prudently cautious about "the cat next door." He never speaks- that would be one human trait too many- but he manages to convey everything necessary in facial expressions and thought balloons. A one-man show with superior intelligence and vivid imagination, he has created such multiple personalities as: Joe Cool, World War I Flying Ace, Literary Ace, Flashbeagle, Vulture, Foreign Legionnaire, etc. Lucy Lucy Van Pelt works hard at being bossy, crabby and selfish. She is loud and yells a lot. Her smiles and motives are rarely pure. She's a know-it-all who dispenses advice whether you want it or not--and for Charlie Brown, there's a charge. She's a fussbudget, in the true sense of the word. She's a real grouch, with only one or two soft spots, and both of them may be Schroeder, who prefers Beethoven. As she sees it, hers is the only way. The absence of logic in her arguments holds a kind of shining lunacy. When it comes to compliments, Lucy only likes receiving them.     Yard and Garden ―10-07-2017 ―Ted Griess / Extension Horticulture Assistant Soon it will be time for another airing of the animated television special It’s the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown. For fifty-one years, viewers have been delighted watching the Peanuts comic strip kids visit the great pumpkin patch awaiting the rise of the Great Pumpkin on Halloween, and as Linus believes, to watch him fly through the air with his bag of toys for all the children. This past weekend, Rita and I felt like Lucy and Linus. We spent time visiting the great pumpkin patch, but this one was for real ― the Nielsen Kids U-Pick Pumpkin Patch located at 838 33 Rd, Minden, Nebraska. This thirty-plus acre pumpkin patch is mostly the brainchild of Anson Nielsen, a young Minden farmer. Anson’s passion for horticulture and agriculture dates back to his youth growing up on the family farm. I readily recall Anson joining our local garden club as a teenager in high school. At the time, our club was comprised mostly of older gardeners, including yours truly. We were all impressed when the club visited young Anson’s garden and witnessed his enthusiasm for growing assorted produce. It is obvious that through the years his enthusiasm has grown. With the help of his entire family, including four generations, this great pumpkin patch rivals Charlie Brown’s. Here is what we experienced. At no charge, a Nielsen family member welcomed us when we entered the pumpkin patch. We were given a map of the patch, a description of the many varieties available (over 100) and a price list (extremely reasonable) based mostly on the sizes of the pumpkins.
