The University of Tokyo and Todai In English we are known as the University of Tokyo and in Japanese as Tokyo Daigaku (東京大学), which literally translated is "Tokyo University." In Japanese, however, compound words are often abbreviated to just the first character of each component. Abbreviating Tokyo Daigaku leaves Todai (東大), which is how most people refer to us in Japan. 02 Mission 03 About the University Todai is Japan's top university, a world-class center for research, and a vibrant academic community.
