  • Michael Smith Is a Legend in Folk Music Songwriting, Having Been Recorded by Hundreds of Artists Across the World Today
The Folk Club of Reston-Herndon Preserving the traditions of Folk Music, Folk Lore, and Gentle Folk Ways Volume 22, Issue 4 April 2006 April 11 Showcase – Mike Haley by Dan Grove Michael Francis Haley was born in North Carolina, but had settled in Manassas in time to go to Stonewall Jackson High School, where his ability on the violin first drew notice. He was playing fiddle tunes in the school talent show when a member of the audience, a local auctioneer, heard him and offered him a job as a strolling violinist for a dinner gala. As a senior, he was the recipient of the Prince William County Public Schools Music Achievement Award. Since then, Mike has been a violinist in the George Mason Symphony Orchestra (he also got a degree in Speech Communication there) and the Prince George's Philharmonic. Influences on violin have been Luis Garcia, a teacher in Triangle, VA, and Henry Kashinski, Concert Master of the Prince William Symphony, plus videos, recordings, and books by Jascha Heifetz, Vassar Clements, Nigel Kennedy, Itzhak Perlman, Bobby Hicks, and others. Mike also went through a rock phase (what he jokingly calls his musical “deviation period”). In high school he idolized Angus Young, the AC/DC guitarist, and from 1988-1991 he first sang in a “metal hair band” called the Backstreet Kidz, and then played guitar with a group called Discovery. He has composed and played lead electric rock violin, too, including making a music video. With the musical “deviation” over (but with the hair surviving), Mike now performs exclusively as a solo violinist.

2011 FARM GATHERING PROGRAM www.farmfolk.org PAGE 1 PAGE 2 www.farmfolk.org 2011 FARM GATHERING PROGRAM WELCOME to FARM 2011! If this is your first FARM Gathering, welcome home! We’re so happy to have you here. The past three years in Bolingbrook, IL have brought us more and more first-timers along with all the FARM regulars who never miss a gathering. Everyone’s an old friend, the minute you walk in the door. We hope it will be obvious that a lot of love goes into creating this conference as each year a small band of volunteers works extremely hard to bring you an event which raises the bar from the previous. This year is no exception. We’ve got another stellar batch of artists - including those on stage under the bright lights and those playing their hearts out in every corner of the hotel. Luminaries and emerging artists, world travelers and hometown favorites – we’ve got’em all. For the first time this year, FARM has opened a small number of rooms for Private Showcases. Along with our Official Showcases, DJ Showcase and Performance Lane, there will be no shortage of great music being heard. Our Planning Committee this year was the tops! Cindy Morgan, VERY Special Thanks to our our volunteer coordinator, works for weeks in advance to 2011 FARM Gathering Sponsors: ensure we have enough help to make everything run smoothly. We’ve got ‘greeters’ and ‘enforcers’ and who will be on hand to make sure you have what you need. Just look for the folks Wheatland Music Organization wearing a black FARM T-shirt.

  • ASCAP/BMI Comment
Stuart Rosen Senior Vice President General Counsel November 20, 2015 Chief, Litigation III Section Antitrust Division U.S. Department of Justice 450 5th Street NW, Suite 4000 Washington, DC 20001 Re: Justice Department Review of the BMI and ASCAP Consent Decrees To the Chief of the Litigation III Section: BMI recently alerted its community of affiliated songwriters, composers and publishers to the profound impact 100% licensing would have on their careers, both creatively and financially, if it were to be mandated by the U.S. Department of Justice. In a call to action, BMI provided a letter, one for songwriters and one for publishers, to which their signatures could be added. The response was overwhelming. BMI received nearly 13,000 signatures from writers, composers and publishers of all genres of music, at all levels in their careers. Some of the industry's most well- known songwriters added their names, including Stephen Stills, Cynthia Weil, Steve Cropper, Ester Dean, Dean Pitchford, Congressman John Hall, Trini Lopez, John Cafferty, Gunnar Nelson, Lori McKenna, Shannon Rubicam and Don Brewer, among many others. Enclosed you will find the letters, with signatures attached. On behalf of BMI, I strongly urge you to consider the voices of thousands of songwriters and copyright owners reflected here before making a decision that will adversely affect both the creators, and the ongoing creation of, one ofAmerica's most important cultural and economic resources.
