Socio-linguistic groups throughout China have traditionally used plants as fermentation starters (or koji) for brewing traditional rice wine. The objective of this study was to evaluate traditional knowledge, diversity, and values regarding plants used as starters for brewing glutinous rice wine in the Dong communities in the Guizhou Province of China, an area of rich biological and cultural diversity. Methods: Semi-structured interviews were administered for collecting ethnobotanical data on plants used as starters for brewing glutinous rice wine in Dong communities. Field work was carried out in three communities in Guizhou Province from September 2017 to July 2018. A total of 217 informants were interviewed from the villages. Results: A total of 60 plant species were identified to be used as starters for brewing glutinous rice wine, belonging to 58 genera in 36 families. Asteraceae and Rosaceae are the most represented botanical families for use as a fermentation starter for rice wine with 6 species respectively, followed by Lamiaceae (4 species); Asparagaceae, Menispermaceae, and Polygonaceae (3 species respectively); and Lardizabalaceae, Leguminosae, Moraceae, Poaceae, and Rubiaceae (2 species, respectively). -

CHANG PING-CH'UAN (Institute of History and Philology, Taipei) ON THE FU HAO INSCRIPTIONS ABSTRACT: Both the paper and the author's presentation. The paper deals with the oracle-bone inscriptions referring to Fu Hao (or Zi), indirectly addressing the question whether this Fu Hao is the same person as the one mentioned in the bronze inscrip tions from M5 at Anyang. The combined researches of Shima Kunio and Yen I-p'ing have already established that all but one of the 262 Fu Zi oracle inscriptions so far known are from Tung Tso-pin's Period I. The only doubtful instance remaining is Jiabian 668, dated by Shima to Tung's Period IV. The main reason for this dating was the shape of the graph used for the character w_u b^- . On Jiabian 668, this graph is rendered as -£ , whereas according to the received opinion it should, in Period I, have been | , or W . Chang Ping-ch'lian, however, had also observed the graph ~% in Period I oracle bones. Therefore he agreed with Hu Houxuan's opinion that Jiabian 668 ought to date from Period I. -

The Mills College Art Museum is pleased to present Hung Liu: Offerings a rare opportunity to experience two of the Oakland-based artist’s most significant large- scale installations: Jiu Jin Shan (Old Gold Mountain) (1994) and Tai Cang—Great Granary (2008). Hung Liu: Offerings will be on view from January 23 through March 17, 2013. The opening reception takes place on Wednesday, January 23, 2013 from 6:00–8:00 pm and free shuttle service will be provided from the MacArthur Bart station during the opening. Recognized as America's most important Chinese artist, Hung Liu’s installations have played a central role in her work throughout her career. In Jiu Jin Shan (Old Gold Mountain), over two hundred thousand fortune cookies create a symbolic gold mountain that engulfs a crossroads of railroad tracks running beneath. The junction where the tracks meet serves as both a crossroads and 1 terminus, a visual metaphor of the cultural intersection of East and West. Liu references not only the history of the Chinese laborers who built the railroads to support the West Coast Gold Rush, but also the hope shared among these migrant workers that they could find material prosperity in the new world. The Mills College Art Museum is excited to be the first venue outside of China to present Tai Cang— Great Granary. -

MSTCM Course Descriptions Acupuncture AC211 Acupuncture I (4.0 units) Acupuncture, a core part of traditional Chinese medicine, consists of 6 courses and provides students with a thorough theoretical and practical knowledge of meridian theory and modern clinical applications of traditional Chinese acupuncture. The courses comprise an introduction of meridian theory, point location, functions and indications, different types of needle manipulation, therapeutic techniques and equipment, clinical strategies and methodologies in acupuncture treatment. Acupuncture I covers the history of acupuncture and moxibustion, meridian theory, basic point theory, point location, functions and indications of the first 6 channels (the lung channel of hand Taiyin, the large intestine channel of hand Yangming, the stomach channel of foot Yangming, the spleen channel of foot Taiyin, the heart channel of the hand Shaoyin, and the small intestine channel of hand Taiyang). The lab sessions focus on accurate point locations for each of these channels. INTRODUCTION For centuries, traditional healers worldwide have practiced methods of energy healing, viewing the body as a complex energy system with energy flowing through or over its surface (Rakel, 2007). Until recently, the Western world largely ignored the Eastern interpretation of humans as energy beings. However, times have changed dramatically and an exciting and promising new branch of academic inquiry and clinical research is opening in the area of energy healing (Oschman, 2000; Trivieri & Anderson, 2002). Scientists and energy therapists around the world have made discoveries that will forever alter our picture of human energetics. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) is conducting research in areas such as energy healing and prayer, and major U.S. academic institutions are conducting large clinical trials in these areas. RESEARCH ARTICLE Energies Alterations and Chakras’ Energies Deficiencies as one of the Causes of Psoriasis Huang Wei Ling Infectious Diseases, General Practice, Nutrition, Acupuncture, Pain management, Medical Acupuncture and Pain Management Clinic, Franca, São Paulo, Brazil ABSTRACT Introduction: Psoriasis is an inflammatory and proliferative condition of the skin characterized by plaques covered by silvery scales mainly in the exterior surfaces, lumbar region, and scalp. In traditional Chinese medicine, psoriasis is caused by the internal Heat generating a Fire, caused by emotional factors leading to a blocked in the Qi movement. This Fire can enter the Blood circulation or stagnate due to improper diet or due to exogenous Fire. Purpose: the purpose of this study is to demonstrate that patients with psoriasis symptoms have energies alterations and chakras’ energies deficiencies and the balance of this internal energies using Chinese dietary counseling, auricular acupuncture associating with apex ear bloodletting and replenishing the chakras’ energies meridians using homeopathies medications according to the theory Constitutional Homeopathy of the Five Elements Based on Traditional Chinese Medicine are important tools to treat this kind of patients. Methods: Two cases report of patients with history of psoriasis symptoms during years using topical medications and other treatments without any success. They both began treatment using Chinese dietary counseling avoiding dairy products, raw foods, sweets, cold water and also, fried foods, chocolate, honey, coconut, alcoholic beverages, and melted cheese. The radiesthesia procedure was done and reveled that all chakras’ energies were in the lowest level of energy, rated one out of eight and the treatment replenishing the chakras’ energies meridians using homeopathies medications according to the theory created by the author entitled Constitutional Homeopathy of the Five Elements based on Traditional Chinese Medicine. -

Difference Between Hypersensitivity and Autoimmunity www.differencebetwee.com Key Difference – Hypersensitivity vs Autoimmunity Autoimmunity is an adaptive immune response mounted against self-antigens. In simple terms, when your body is acting against its own cells and tissues, this is called an autoimmune reaction. An exaggerated and inappropriate immune response to an antigenic stimulus is defined as a hypersensitivity reaction. Unlike autoimmune reactions that are triggered only by the endogenous antigens, hypersensitivity reactions are triggered by both endogenous and exogenous antigens. This is the key difference between hypersensitivity and autoimmunity. What is Hypersensitivity? An exaggerated and inappropriate immune response to an antigenic stimulus is defined as a hypersensitivity reaction. The first exposure to a particular antigen activates the immune system and, antibodies are produced as a result. This is called sensitization. Subsequent exposures to the same antigen give rise to hypersensitivity. Few important facts regarding the hypersensitivity reactions are given below They can be elicited by both exogenous and endogenous agents. They are a result of an imbalance between the effector mechanisms and the countermeasures that are there to control any inappropriate execution of an immune response. The presence of a genetic susceptibility increases the likelihood of hypersensitivity reactions. The manner in which hypersensitivity reactions harm our body is similar to the way that the pathogens are destroyed by immune reactions. Type I- Immediate Type/ Anaphylactic Mechanism Vasodilation, edema, and contraction of smooth muscles are the pathological changes that take place during the immediate phase of the reaction. -

China, a country with a long history and a specific culture, has also a long and specific astronomy. Ancient Chinese astronomers observed the stars, named and distributed them into constellations in a very specific way, which is quite different from the current one. Around the Zodiac, stars are divided into four big regions corresponding with the four orientations, and each is related to a totem, either the Azure Dragon, the Vermilion Bird, the White Tiger or the Murky Warrior. We present a general pattern of the ancient Chinese constellations, including the four totems, their stars and their names. Keywords. China, constellations, mansions 1. Introduction Three enclosures, four symbols and twenty-eight mansions characterise the ancient Chinese constellations. This division of the starry sky began to appear in China before the Zhou and Qin dynasties. The three enclosures refer to three areas around the North celestial pole: the Purple Forbidden enclosure, the Supreme Palace enclosure and the Heavenly Market enclosure. The four symbols are distributed near the ecliptic Zodiac and the lunar orbit and are represented by four totems: the Azure Dragon of the East, the Vermillion Bird of the South, the White Tiger of the West and the Black Tortoise of the North. Every symbol was divided into seven sections which were know as mansions.
