Hamilton Tracy Wilson Wayne Croley William Ross 1 Christopher Denman Ancestor of Compatriot Bradley T. Reardon, Ph.D., #184959 Christopher Denman was a 4th Generation American. His Great Grandfather settled in Dorchester, Massachusetts in 1635. His family lived in Salem and Long Island before his grandfather moved to Westfield, New Jersey. Christopher was born on 5 March 1741. In 1766 he married Abigail Hendricks. They had 9 children between 1772 and 1792. Christopher served the American Cause in Captain Benjamin Laing's Company under Col Moses Jaques of the New Jersey Militia. He also furnished supplies to the government. His service is recorded in the New Jersey Revolutionary War Slips and in the NJ DOD Materials Roll #30, MSS #244, #355, #4453, #4459. Christopher returned home after the war and died 21 Oct 1808 in Westfield, New Jersey. Christopher Denman and Abigail Hendricks Denman are buried in the Presbyterian Church Burial Grounds at Westfield, Essex, NJ. Christopher Denman's father-in-law was Isaac Hendricks. Isaac provided Patriotic Service by furnishing supplies recorded in Stratford & Wilson, Certs & Receipts of Rev NJ, pp 86, 109. Isaac Hendricks is buried in the Presbyterian Church grounds at Westfield, Union, NJ. Christopher Denman's daughter, Susan, married Jonathan Corey.

Originals of some of the documents referred to are transcribed below from rejected claims in the Library of Virginia.] ISAAC S. BOWMAN [son of Isaac Bowman] & GEORGE BRINKER, Surviving Executors of ISAAC BOWMAN, deceased, v. THE UNITED STATES. Judge BLACKFORD delivered the opinion of the court. This claim was presented to the Treasury Department in 1834, and was rejected by the Secretary, Mr. Woodbury, on the ground that the evidence was not deemed sufficient in the absence of all record proof of the testator's services. In March, 1853, the case was submitted to Mr. Heath, the Commissioner of Pensions, and the claim was rejected. In September, 1853, the case was submitted to Mr. Waldo, the Commissioner of Pensions, and the claim was again rejected. In October, 1853, the decision of Commissioner Waldo was affirmed by the Secretary of the Interior, Mr. McClelland. A petition was afterwards presented to Congress in favor of the claim. On the 13th of February, 1854, the Senate Committee on Pensions made a favorable report, submitting the following resolution : "Resolved, that the claim of Isaac Bowman, legal representative of Isaac Bowman, deceased, for half-pay due his father under the act of the general assembly of Virginia of May, 1779, be referred to the Secretary of the Interior for liquidation, under the act of Congress of July 6, 1832, and that the Committee on Pensions be discharged from the further consideration of the case." That resolution was adopted by the Senate.

Since I knew nothing about the school, Myrtle Neff Smith was invaluable for sharing with me the academy's history. She was the typing teacher at the time. Her grandfather Abraham C. Neff was a charter member of the New Market church when it was organized (1876), the first ordained minister in the state (1883), and the first Virginia Conference president (1883).

Colonel John Bowman was the first county­ lieutenant and mi1itary governor of Kentucky; Colonel Abraham Bowman commanded the 8th Virginia Regiment, one of the out­ standing fighting units of the Revolution; Major Joseph Bowman was a captain in Dunmore's War and the efficient leader, with George Rogers Clark, in the conquest of the Northw-~st (Illinois) Territory, an achievement without parallel in the buUding of our nation; Captain Isaac Bowman was Master of Horse in the Illinois Campaign, a captive three years among the Indians, and an im­ portant man of affairs in Kentucky and Virginia.

One who was born in the Shenandoah Valley, who has dwelt there during the greater portion of his life to the present, and who is by blood three-fourths German or German-Swiss, may doubtless be excused for writing about the German Ele- ment in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. He may also be excused, perhaps, for regarding such a subject as naturally attractive, and for believing that it is well worthy of careful investigation. As a matter of fact, the field has proved most fruitful : so much so that the writer has been surprised at the abundance and wealth of material that may be secured for historical, economical, sociological, political, religious, linguis- tic, and even literary studies. He hastens to say, however, for the reassurance of the reader, that he has not attempted to follow out all these lines of investigation in the present treatise : what he has attempted is merely a plain, unvarnished picture of the people in their homes, in their churches, in their schools, in their fields and workshops, and in the larger re- lations of church and state as affected by peace and war.

District of Kentucky Sct: On this first day of June 1818 before me the subscriber, one of the Judges for the Comm’lt afsd personally appeared Richard Bennett, aged 56 years resident in Scott County and District afores’d, who being by me first duly sworn according to Law, doth on his oath make the following Declaration in order to obtain the provision made by the late act of Congress entitled “an act to provide for certain persons engaged the land and naval service of the United States in the Revolutionary war: That he enlisted in the year 1777 in August in the company commanded by Capt George Slaughter [W8729] in the 8th Virginia Regiment commanded by Colo. Jno Bowman [sic: Abraham Bowman W396] in the State of Verginea for 3 years and served out the same and then reenlisted during the war and served till its close and was honorably discharged at Philadelphia. That he was in the battles of Germantown [4 Oct 1777], and Monmouth [28 Jun 1778] and several skirmishes – that he is in reduced circumstances and stands in need of the assistance of his country for support and that he has no other evidence now in his power of his said services. [Punctuation partly corrected.] State of Kentucky } Fayette County } I Abraham Bowman aged seventy nine years, ten months & twenty days, do, upon oath, testify, and declare that in the winter of 1775 or spring of 1776, I was appointed by the Legislature of Virginia, Lieut Colonel of the [blank] Virginia State Regiment, and Peter Muhlenburgh [sic: Peter Muhlenberg BLWt1495-850]], Col of the same, that in the month of May or June 1776 the said Regiment was taken into Continental establishment, that upon the promotion of Col Muhlenburgh to a Brigadier General, I was promoted to the command of said Regiment, and that I continued to serve in the said regiment from the time of my appointment until after the battle of Monmouth in June 1778 [28 Jun 1778], when a consolidation of regiments took place [at White Plains NY, 14 Sep 1778], and many of the junior officers became supernumary, at that time I was ordered by my Brigadier General Scott [Charles Scott BLWt2055-850] to return to Virginia and call upon the Governor of Virginia for money to recruit the regiment, and having called upon him, he told me that the states quota had been given out before I had made the application, and certified it upon my orders. I then remained an officer during the War without being again called into service. I further declare that I have never at any time received a warrant from the United States for the bounty land due me as an officer aforesaid, nor have I ever at any time transferred or sold the same to any person.
