York Symphony 2014-2015 Educational Opportunities Dear Music Educator, Listed below are six of our Educational Opportunities that students can participate in. We have ordered them chronologically to align with the school year. Sultner Wells Scholarship Deadline for Application: August 1st A scholarship program which is intended to assist York County students who are majoring in music. Applications are accepted and reviewed by a committee of three who submit their recommendations to the YSO Board of Directors for approval.

Song Writing Contest Deadline for applications: October 10, 2014. Performance of first place entries: Young Person’s Concert, Thur. Nov. 13th & Fri. Nov. 14th, 2014 This program is an opportunity for budding composers to showcase their song writing talents and compete in three age categories – grades 3-5, 6-8 and 9-12. Recognition and cash awards will be given to three winners in each category. First place winning compositions in each age category will be or- chestrated and performed by the YSO at the Young Persons’ Concerts or similar venue.

Open Dress Rehearsal Timeframe: Generally the Friday before a Saturday performance. Families, students, and educators are invited to attend Dress Rehearsals where they have an oppor- tunity to get a first hand look at the concert preparation process. No cost for attendance. No pre- registration—however always check the YSO website before attending, if Dress Rehearsal is closed there will be a notification on our website. Attendees are asked to sign a guest book.

Guest Artist Educational Performances/Master Classes Timeframe: Throughout the concert season when Guest Artists are in town When world-class artists come to York to perform with the YSO, we frequently take these musical role models to local schools for mini-concerts and lectures. Master classes with guest artists also may be held at the Strand-Capitol or an area school. Targeted to high school and college age students. De- pendent upon the guest artists and the possible cost and their schedule.

In School Performances—Collaboration with “Stage the Page” Timeframe: Late winter/early spring Elementary students from kindergarten thru third grade are given a chance to see professional York Symphony musicians in action right in their schools. Dialogue about the music and instruments and time for questions are all a part of this invaluable education experience. This program is one aspect to the Stage The Page Program.

My Opus Magnum: Summer Composition Camp Timeframe: Usually second or third week in July This is a weeklong intensive music composition camp held for 1 week in July. Students of various ages and musical abilities are led through the process of creating their own master work by highly qualified composition instructors and music educators. The use of computer software and integration of their personal performing abilities enhances this invaluable experience.
