Seafood Watch® defines sustainable seafood as originating from sources, whether wild-caught or farmed, which can maintain or increase production in the long-term without jeopardizing the structure or function of affected ecosystems. Seafood Watch® makes its science-based recommendations available to the public in the form of regional pocket guides that can be downloaded from the Internet (seafoodwatch.org) or obtained from the Seafood Watch® program by emailing [email protected]. The program’s goals are to raise awareness of important ocean conservation issues and empower seafood consumers and businesses to make choices for healthy oceans. Each sustainability recommendation on the regional pocket guides is supported by a Seafood Report. Executive Summary Three king crab species are of commercial importance around the world: red king crab (Paralithodes camtschaticus); blue king crab (Paralithodes platypus); and golden king crab (Lithodes aequispinus). They are generally distributed from the Sea of Japan to the Bering Sea, Aleutian Islands, and Gulf of Alaska. The red king crab has also been introduced into the Barents Sea. The U.S. (49%) and Russia (45%) are the primary sources of king crab in the U.S. market. In the U.S., the Bristol Bay red king crab fishery and the Aleutian Islands golden king crab fishery comprised 60% and 32% of the U.S. landings, respectively. In Russia, king crab is caught in the Russian Far East and the Barents Sea. King crabs are moderately vulnerable to fishing pressure due to a moderate age at first maturity and sexual segregation during feeding periods. The Bristol Bay red king crab and Aleutian Islands golden king crab stocks, which comprise the majority (~92%) of the U.S. king crab fishery, are healthy. The Bristol Bay red king crab stock is not experiencing overfishing and biomass is above 100% BMSY. Estimates of biomass for the Aleutian Islands golden king crab stock is unknown and therefore it is unknown if the stock is overfished; however, CPUE has increased since the early 2000s. In addition, the stock is not experiencing overfishing and the size/sex/age distribution is normal. Given this information, the status of the Bristol Bay red king crab and Aleutian Islands golden king crab stocks are considered to be healthy according to Seafood Watch®. Moderate levels of king crab bycatch relative to landings occur in the directed Bristol Bay red king crab fishery (~16%) and the Aleutian Islands golden king crab fishery (~11%). This current level of bycatch has little impact on population levels. The crab pots used in the fishery are known to have moderate impacts to habitat. In addition, the fishery occurs over a moderate spatial scale. Management of the U.S. fishery is considered to be highly effective. The National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) and the Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADF&G) regularly conduct stock assessments, collect fishery-dependent and independent data, and have implemented and enforced a suite of management measures, including guideline harvest levels (GHLs), size and sex limits, gear restrictions, fishing seasons, and observer coverage. In addition, ADF&G implemented a bycatch reduction plan and is responsive to changes in the fishery. Due to the moderate inherent vulnerability of king crabs to fishing pressure, healthy stock status, moderate levels of bycatch, moderate habitat impacts, and highly effective management, the U.S. king crab fishery is given an overall seafood recommendation of Good Alternative. In the Russian Far East, most king crab stocks are at historically low abundance levels, including the western Kamchatkan stock of red king crab, which had been the largest stock in the region. Overfishing and illegal fishing are regularly occurring and deteriorating the stocks, making the stock status for king crab in this region a critical conservation concern. The large amounts of illegal fishing also mean that management is highly ineffective. Regulations are ignored, resulting in exceeded catch quotas, ineffective bycatch measures, and failing stock productivity. Due to the critical conservation concerns of stock status and ineffective management, the Russian Far East king crab fishery is given an overall seafood recommendation of Avoid. 3 Seafood Watch® King Crab Report August 23, 2010 In the Russian Barents Sea, the red king crab is a quickly spreading invasive species that is causing substantial ecosystem impacts, including adverse impacts on lumpsucker recruitment and health of the native cod and sea urchin populations. The fishery is managed using methods that would traditionally be deemed as highly effective, but because the fishery is based on a non- native, invasive species, existing management is not desirable. In addition, attempting to maintain or enhance abundance through management of a non-native species is a violation of Article 8(h) of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), which states that “Contracting parties to the Convention should, as far as possible and appropriate, prevent the introduction of, control or eradicate those alien species which threaten ecosystems, habitats, or species” (Hansson 2002). Until the fishery is managed as an eliminated fishery, Seafood Watch© deems the management of the Barents Sea fishery to be a high conservation concern. Due to the high conservation concerns of the ineffective management regime and the non-native, invasive species’ effects on the habitat and ecosystem, the Russian Barents Sea king crab fishery is given an overall seafood recommendation of Avoid Table of Sustainability Ranks Conservation Concern Sustainability Criteria Low Moderate High Critical

Stock: Pribilof Islands (Pribilof District) golden king crab Lithodes aequispinus 2. Catches: Commercial fishing for golden king crab in the Pribilof District has been concentrated in the Pribilof Canyon. The fishing season for this stock has been defined as a calendar year (as opposed to a “crab fishery year”) following the close of the 1983/84 season. The domestic fishery developed in the 1982/83 season, although some limited fishing occurred at least as early as 1981/82. Peak harvest occurred in the 1983/84 season with a retained catch of 0.856-million pounds (388 t) by 50 vessels. Since then, participation in the fishery has been sporadic and annually retained catch has been variable, from 0 pounds in the nine years that no vessels participated (1984, 1986, 1990–1992, 2006–2009) up to a maximum of 0.342-million pounds (155 t) in 1995, when seven vessels made landings. The fishery is not rationalized. There is no state harvest strategy in regulation. A guideline harvest level (GHL) was first established for the fishery in 1999 at 0.200-million pounds (91 t) and has been managed towards a GHL of 0.150- million pounds (68 t) since 2000. No vessels participated in the directed fishery and no landings were made during 2006–2009. One vessel landed catch in 2010 and two vessels landed catch in 2011; directed fishery catch cannot be reported in those two years under the confidentiality requirements of Sec.

Gravid females were captured in Prince William Sound, Alaska, and juveniles were reared in the laboratory at 3°–10°C to obtain information on growth per molt and intermolt duration. The equation describing the increase in CL for crabs 2 to 35 mm CL was: New CL mm = Initial CL (1.25) + 0.14; r2 = 0.99, n = 76. The average increase in CL after molting was 28% (SD = 8%), and the corresponding value for chela height (CH) was 33% (SD = 17%).   • Sustainable Seafood Campaign
    Sustainable Seafood Campaign Overfishing and destructive fishing are among the most significant threats facing our oceans. The UN reports that three-quarters of global fish stocks are either fully exploited or overexploited. Scientists estimate that 90% of top marine predators such as tuna and sharks are already gone. Pirate fishing, estimated to account for up to a third of the global catch, is notorious for targeting at-risk populations and using highly destructive methods. Destructive fishing indiscriminately kills “non-target” species, including marine mammals and seabirds, and destroys habitats that marine species depend on for survival. In addition to the direct and cascading effects on marine ecosystems, overfishing and destructive fishing make our ocean ecosystems more vulnerable to global warming. If current trends continue, scientists predict global fisheries will collapse in forty years. U.S. consumers buy half their seafood at supermarkets, to the tune of $16 billion every year. As consumer interest in sustainable products has grown, so have retailer efforts to promote their eco-friendly initiatives. Yet, few supermarkets have made significant efforts to improve their seafood sustainability. Greenpeace is calling on supermarkets to sell only sustainable seafood and to support positive reforms in fisheries management. By doing so, supermarkets will do their part to help avert the crisis facing our oceans while ensuring their customers quality fish from sustainable fisheries for years to come. Supermarkets have enormous purchasing power, and are well positioned to influence the way the fishing industry operates. What You Can Do! Greenpeace needs your help monitoring supermarket seafood policies and practices. The information you gather will be used to update our supermarket scorecard.

Recent records of lithodid crabs in deeper waters off the Antarctic continental slope raised the question of the return of crabs to Antarctic waters, following their extinction in the lower Miocene ;15 million years ago. Antarctic cooling may be responsible for the impoverishment of the marine high Antarctic decapod fauna, presently comprising only ®ve benthic shrimp species. Effects of polar conditions on marine life, including lowered metabolic rates and short seasonal food availability, are discussed as main evolutionary driving forces shaping Antarctic diversity. In particular, planktotrophic larval stages should be vulnerable to the mismatch of prolonged development and short periods of food avail- ability, selecting against complex life cycles. We hypothesize that larval lecithotrophy and cold tolerance, as recently observed in Subantarctic lithodids, represent, together with other adaptations in the adults, key features among the life-history adaptations of lithodids, potentially enabling them to conquer polar ecosystems. The return of benthic top predators to high Antarctic waters under conditions of climate change would considerably alter the benthic communities.
