Poppe INTRODUCTION The publication of Philippine Marine Mollusks, Volumes 1 to 4 has been a revelation to the conchological community. Apart from being the delight of collectors, the PMM started a new way of layout and publishing - followed today by many authors. Internet technology has allowed more than 50 experts worldwide to work on the collection that forms the base of the 4 PMM books. This expertise, together with modern means of identification has allowed a quality in determinations which is unique in books covering a geographical area. Our Volume 1 was published only 9 years ago: in 2008. Since that time “a lot” has changed. Finally, after almost two decades, the digital world has been embraced by the scientific community, and a new generation of young scientists appeared, well acquainted with text processors, internet communication and digital photographic skills. Museums all over the planet start putting the holotypes online – a still ongoing process – which saves taxonomists from huge confusion and “guessing” about how animals look like. Initiatives as Biodiversity Heritage Library made accessible huge libraries to many thousands of biologists who, without that, were not able to publish properly. The process of all these technological revolutions is ongoing and improves taxonomy and nomenclature in a way which is unprecedented. All this caused an acceleration in the nomenclatural field: both in quantity and in quality of expertise and fieldwork. The above changes are not without huge problematics. Many studies are carried out on the wide diversity of these problems and even books are written on the subject. -

^^ FIELDIANA • ZOOLOGY 3 Published by CHICAGO NATURAL HISTORY MUSEUM Volume 39 October 17, 1958 No. 20 MARINE MOLLUSKS FROM BOUGAINVILLE AND FLORIDA, SOLOMON ISLANDS Alan Solem Assistant Curator, Division of Lower Invertebrates My checklist of the Solomon Island marine and fresh-water mol- lusks (Solem, 1953) was based on a large collection donated to Chicago Natural History Museum by Captain J. M. Ross and sup- plemented by a series of records in the literature. Two small collec- tions of marine shells given to the University of Michigan Museum of Zoology add to our knowledge of the fauna, and the additional data are reported below. I did not communicate with Dr. C. E. Fox, who presented the shells to Captain Ross, until after the checklist had been published. Dr. Fox then informed me that all the shells he gave to Captain Ross were found near Guadalcanal and Malaita Islands. The local- ity "Solomon Islands" cited by me (Solem, 1953) for the Fox col- lection should be restricted to "Guadalcanal and Malaita." Since September, 1952, when my manuscript (Solem, 1953) was submitted, the checklist of Kuroda and Habe (1952), the semi-pop- ular book of Kira (1955), and the ecological study of Demond (1957) have brought to my attention a number of nomenclatural changes affecting the names used by me (Solem, 1953) . These changes in no way alter the taxonomic position of the genera and species—only the names applied to the units. Both below, and in a report on the New Hebridean marine fauna (Solem, in press), a number of nomen- clatural changes are recorded. -

Beaulieu* INTRODUCTION It is the purpose of th is publi cation to provide a concise , yet comprehensive discussion of the for mations of western Oregon. It is the further aim that the data for each of the formations be as current as possi ble. Consequently, the emphasis has been placed on th e recent literature . Although this paper should not be viewed as a discussion of the historical development of each of the fo rmations, the original reference for each of the units is given . Also, in cases where the historical development of the formation has a direct bearing on present-day problems it is included in the discussion . A wide variety of published literature and unpublished reports , theses, and dissertations was con sul ted and several professional opin ions regarding specific problems were so licited . In recent years re search has been concentrated in the Klamath Mountains and the southern Coast Range and for these regions literature was volumi nous. -

Herpetopoma eboreum n. sp. is described and compared with similar eucyclinid species from the Indo-Pacific area. A new combination is proposed for Agathodonta townsendiana (Melvill & Standen, 1903). RESUME. Herpetopoma eboreum n. sp. est décrite et comparée avec des espèces analogues d'Eucyclinae provenant de la zone Indo-Pacifique. Corcoran State Geologist FOREWORD This is the second in a series of pu blications of the State of Oregon Department of Geology and Mi neral Industries that discusses the petroleum potential in various parts of Oregon . The first report, published in 1963, covered part of the Snake River basin along th e eastern border of the state near Vale and Ontar io, where several test wells encou ntered large bu t discontinuous "shows" of gas. The present report is concerned with northwestern Oregon, particularly th e lower Columbia and Wi llamette basi ns . The northwestern part of Oregon has been an area of petroleum exploration for more than 40 years, but most of th e important dri lling activity has been confined to two brief periods -- the middle 1940's dur ing and shortly after World War II and the late 1950's and early 1960's , resulting from the gas and oi I showings in the Barr No . 1 wel l near Lebanon . Although no commercial production developed after th is explorational effort, the work has shown that th ick sections of marine rocks exist in this region and that in some areas porous and permeable sands are present . -

The Stratigraphy and Depositional Setting of the Spencer

Title: The Stratigraphy and Depositional Setting of the Spencer Formation, West-central Willamette Valley, Oregon; a Surface-subsurface Analysis Abstract approved: Redacted for Privacy Dr. Kieth F. Oles The late Eocene Spencer Formation crops out in the low hills on the western edge of the central Willamette Valley, Oregon.Surface exposures in eastern Benton and southeastern Polk Counties and oil/gas well records and cuttings in Polk, Marion and Linn Counties were studied to determine Spencer stratigraphy, regional lithologic variations, and depositional environment. Methods used include: study of outcrops, petrography, texture, and well cuttings, as well as the correlation of well logs and microfossil data of McKeel (1984, 1985). The distribution of the underlying early-late Eocene Yamhill Formation is also briefly considered. The Yamhill Formation consists of the Miller sandstone member enclosed between mudstones. The lower and middle Yamhill record shoaling from bathyal to marginal marine depths, and they are overlain by bathyal upper Yamhill mudstones. The Miller sandstone is lens-shaped, trends parallel to the Corvallis fault, and reaches a maximum thickness of approximately 2,000 feet on the east side of the fault. The Miller sandstone grades westward into bathyal mudstones, and eastward into volcanic tuffs and flows. Thinning of the Miller sandstone and upper Yamhill mudstone along the Corvallis fault suggests movement during early late Eocene. The absence of Yamhill strata along the outcrop belt to the southwest may be related to this tectonic activity. -

Grace Wilmarth, published in 1938 and reprinted in 1951 and 1957, met a long standing need and continuing demand for a compilation of geologic names. Plans made for future compilations as new names and revisions appeared were interrupted during the years of World War II. In 1952 a sustained effort was begun toward review of geo logic publications necessary to furnish a background for preparation of a new edition. After the review was brought up to date in 1956, the present compilation was prepared in order to furnish to the geo logic profession, as quickly as possible, some of the essential data concerning the new names that have appeared since 1935. -
