The Bottom Shelf Review Wilson College 2009
The Bottom Shelf Review Wilson College 2009 Edited by: Jessica Carnes and Jess Domanico Advised by: Dr. Michael G. Cornelius Review Staff: Kayla Chagnon, Suzanne Cole, and Nicole Twigg My Mother’s Hands Debbie Arthur I think of my mother and I think of her hands; Why? When looking back over my life, all of the things that I seem to remember about her, she was using her hands I remember when those hands patched walls with plaster. They took off rooms and rooms of wallpaper; painted every wall in our home with every color of the rainbow. They carried coal to the furnace to keep us warm in the winter; and dug out the cellar to store that coal. Those hands took care of her children, digging stones out of our knees, putting bandage upon bandage on so many cuts and bruises to make them better. They smacked us when we disobeyed and marched us to church 3 times a week. They took care of us when we were sick, patting our hot little heads; feeding us when we were too sick to eat, and with all those kids that was a lot of feeding. They tucked warm blankets around each of her children to keep out the cold at night. They folded in prayer each and every day to talk to God. You would think they would be worn out with all that work they have done over the years for so many of us. But they are not. When I walk into that house today, stressed or upset, those hands on my face and wrapped around me give me peace, it flows through those hands into me and they don’t let go till I am calm. -
Creating the Change Competition
Entries - Creating the Change Competition 1st place: Chris Pow - Holding On. Chris this piece spoke to me on every level. The pain captured was palpable. You play and sing beautifully. A true original piece of expressive art. It reminded me of Oasis and “Don’t hide your light away” - because there is a whole world waiting to hear you sing. Well done. Amazing! Other contributions and judges comments The level of quality for this ‘Creating the Change’ competition was astounding. We have had everything from drawing, music, poetry to musical renditions. Thank you to everyone that has taken the time to submit, it was thoroughly enjoyed and appreciated. Such bravery, honest and integrity spoken from places of hurt and experience. We have collected all your work and with your permission - we have amazing plans for it. Your voice and or creative expression will be heard. Feel empowered and appreciated for your contribution because it was wonderful, heartfelt and passionate - these key ingredients are what is required to make a change. Email entrants My community dream - Kerry Marshall I have walked the walk, so feel I can talk the talk This competition, strangely found its way to me It asked the question, how community mental health care should be? I have suffered in the past, with my mental health The positives I found, is the experience of wealth On a subject I am, most passionate about It’s great to share it with others, and get it all out I’ve spent time on a ward, time with the community team I have visions for both, lots of ideas I dream! -
A Phenomenological Study of Traditional Public High School
A PHENOMENOLOGICAL STUDY OF TRADITIONAL PUBLIC HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATES’ EXPERIENCES WHILE TAKING THEIR FIRST ONLINE COURSE IN COLLEGE by David Warner Liberty University A Dissertation Presented in Partial Fulfillment Of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Education Liberty University 2020 2 A PHENOMENOLOGICAL STUDY OF TRADITIONAL PUBLIC HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATES’ EXPERIENCES WHILE TAKING THEIR FIRST ONLINE COURSE IN COLLEGE by David Warner A Dissertation Presented in Partial Fulfillment Of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Education Liberty University, Lynchburg, VA 2020 APPROVED BY: Kenneth Tierce, EdD, Committee Chair Kelly Bingham, EdD, Committee Member 3 ABSTRACT The purpose of this phenomenological study was to understand the shared lived experiences of traditional high school graduates while taking an online course for the first time. Many colleges and universities provide online courses as part of their regular instructional program. Some colleges and universities require students to take an online course early in their post-secondary education. However, there are a limited number of k-12 public-school districts in the United States that provide opportunities for high school students to take online courses as part of the regular curriculum. This phenomenological study was designed to investigate the perceptions of traditional high school graduates while taking an online course for the first time as university undergraduate students, related to the quality of the learning experiences, challenges faced, and learner satisfaction. Participants for the study included 11 undergraduate college students from a university in the Northeast. Data were gathered via a screening questionnaire, individual interviews, a single focus group interview, and reflective journals. -
Thesis, the Songs of 10 Rappers Were Analyzed
ABSTRACT Get Rich or Die Tryin’: A Semiotic Approach to the Construct of Wealth in Rap Music Kristine Ann Davis, M.A. Mentor: Sara J. Stone, Ph.D. For the past 30 years, rap music has made its way into the mainstream of America, taking an increasingly prominent place in popular culture, particularly for youth, its main consumers. This thesis looks at wealth through the lens of semiotics, an important component of critical/cultural theory, using a hermeneutical analysis of 11 rap songs, spanning the last decade of rap music to find signification and representation of wealth in the rap song lyrics. The research finds three important themes of wealth - relationship between wealth and the opposite sex, wealth that garners respect from other people, and wealth as a signifier for “living the good life” - and five signifiers of wealth – money, cars, attire, liquor, and bling.
