Dr. Scott Hahn Dr. Scott Hahn is the author (or editor) of over forty books, including best-selling titles like Rome Sweet Home, Te Lamb’s Supper, Hail Holy Queen, A Father Who Keeps His Promises, Lord Have Mercy, First Comes Love, Swear to God, Understanding Our Father, Scripture Matter, Spirit and Life, Understanding the Scripture, Catholic Bible Dictionary, Many Are Called, Signs of Life, Reasons to Believe, Answering the New Atheism, Ordinary Work Extraordinary Grace, and Living the Mysteries. His academic publications include Kinship by Covenant: A Canonical Approach to the Fulfllment of God’s Saving Promises (Anchor Yale Bible Reference Library), Te Kingdom of God as Liturgical Empire: A Teological Commentary on 1-2 Chronicles, Covenant and Communion: Te Biblical Teology of Pope Benedict XVI, Letter and Spirit: From Written Text to Living Word in the Liturgy, along with a forthcoming title, Politicizing the Bible: Te Roots of Historical Criticism and the Secularization of Scripture (1300- 1700). An exceptionally popular speaker and teacher, Dr. Scott Hahn has delivered thousands of popular talks and academic lectures, nationally and internationally, on a wide range of topics related to Scripture, Teology and the Catholic faith. Hundreds of these presentations have been recorded and distributed by Catholic Lighthouse, Te St. Paul Center for Biblical Teology, and St. Joseph Communications. He has appeared on hundreds of television programs on the Eternal Word Television Network (EWTN), where he has also been the regular host and presenter on several popular 13-week series (including Our Fathers Plan, Te Lamb’s Super, and Genesis to Jesus). In 2012, Dr. Hahn was awarded the Fr. Michael Scanlan Chair of Biblical Teology and the New Evangelization at the Franciscan University of Steubenville, where he has taught since 1990. He is the founder and president of the St. Paul Center for Biblical Teology. In 2005, he was awarded the Pope Benedict XVI Chair of Biblical Teology and Liturgical Proclamation at St. Vincent Seminary (Latrobe PA), which he held through 2011. In 2002, he was awarded Pio Cardinal Laghi Chair of Catholic Teology at the Pontifcal Seminary Josephinum (Columbus OH), which he held through 2004. Scott graduated from Grove City College in 1979 with his BA in Teology, Philosophy and Economics (magna cum laude). He graduated from Gordon-Conwell Teological Seminary in 1982 with his M.Div (summa cum laude). Scott received his Ph.D. in Teology from Marquette University in 1995 (summa cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa). He has ten years of youth and pastoral ministry experience in Protestant congregations in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Massachusetts, Kansas and Virginia (1975-85), and is a former Professor of Teology at the Dominion Teological Institute (Dominion, VA, now Chesapeake Teological Seminary). He was ordained in 1982 at Trinity Presbyterian Church (Fairfax VA). He entered the Catholic Church at the Easter Vigil, 1986. G o r m a n St. M ary’s Seminary and U niversity Abstract — Building on renewed interest in theosis generally, and par- ticularly with respect to Paul, this essay argues that Romans is the first Christian treatise on theosis, an elaboration of the embryonic passages about theosis, including the “interchange” (Morna Hooker) texts, found in 2 Corinthians. Earlier work on theosis in Paul suggests that it means transformative participation in the kenotic, cruciform character of God through Spirit-enabled conformity to the incarnate, crucified, and resur- rected/glorified Christ. This essay traces Paul’s soteriology of restoring human dikaiosynë and doxa—fundamental elements of theosis—in Ro- mans. For Paul, this restoration is accomplished by participation in the death and resurrection of the obedient and faithful Son. Morrow N ITS DECREE ON PRIESTLY TRAINING, Optatam Totius, the Second Vatican Council urged that the “scientific exposition” of moral theology be “nourished more on the teaching of the Bible” I(no. 16). In the decree’s context, this desire emerges from within the broader concern for the study of Scripture serving as “the soul of all theology” (no. 16). Has this been accomplished? Or is there room for improvement? We might pose a further question: What is the relevance of Optatam Totius, no. 16, outside of the seminary context? After all, most Catholic moral theologians teaching in the U.S., as with most Catholic theologians teaching in the U.S., are no longer clergy nor teaching in a seminary. In the U.S., professional Catholic theologians (moral or otherwise) increasingly come from among the laity. Yet, the conviction that Catholic moral theology—and all of Catholic theology for that matter—should be nourished by Scripture transcends the boundaries of seminary education. In fact, it is a notion that predates the Second Vatican Council. Most of the time St. Thomas Aquinas spent teaching was on Scripture, and his biblical commentaries were among his most important works. For St. Thomas, to be a theologian was to be a commentator on the sacred page.1 This was not unique to St. Thomas. In his Breviloquium, St. Bonaventure used “theology” as another term for “Scripture,” and he intended his Breviloquium to be a guide for advancing “through the forest of Sacred Scripture, hacking with an ax and thus laying it open.”2 In his apostolic exhortation Evangelii Gaudium, Pope Francis exhorts that all Catholics should study Scripture: “The study of the sacred Scriptures must be a door opened to every believer” (no.
