OFFENSE: TE HEATH MILLER, PITTSBURGH STEELERS • Pittsburgh’s first-round pick HEATH MILLER from Virginia (No. 30 overall) caught 17 passes from his tight end position for 184 yards (10.8 avg.) and five TDs during the month and caught a season-high two TDs in the Steelers’ 20-19 Monday Night win against Baltimore in Week 8. Miller leads all Steelers with six touchdowns, already accounting for the most in a season by a Steelers tight end since MARK BRUENER recorded six in 1997. Miller’s six TD catches are tied for the most by an AFC tight end, helping Pittsburgh go 3-1 (.750) in the month. His 36 points lead all rookie non-kickers on the year. Miller has an active streak of four consecutive games (all in October) with a TD reception, tying the team record for tight ends set by ERIC GREEN in 1991. Miller is only the third rookie tight end in NFL history to catch six TD passes in his first seven games, joining RAYMOND CHESTER (Oakland Raiders, 1970) and Green (Steelers, 1990). -

The 2006 NFL Draft class – though new to the league -- matches up well with the experienced veterans when it comes to dedication to their mothers. For instance, Houston Texans rookie defensive end MARIO WILLIAMS -- the first overall selection in the draft – told his mother MARY that she did not have to play the newly launched North Carolina lotto anymore. “I’m going to be your lottery now,” he told her with a smile. Quarterback VINCE YOUNG is so proud of his mom FELICIA, he brought her to the podium with him in the interview room right after he was chosen with the third overall pick in the draft by the Tennessee Titans. “We're very close,” Young said. “We've been through a lot together and I feel like the world should see where I came from. That’s why I brought her up here.” Another first-round quarterback – the Arizona Cardinals’ MATT LEINART – may be performing some unexpected Mother’s Day chores. -

PATS MONDAY NIGHT At the mid-point, only one is perfect. “Perfect” as in undefeated. And the Indianapolis Colts – the NFL’s lone unbeaten team at 7-0 as the season hits the halfway mark – want to keep it that way in Week 9 after a bye. But wouldn’t you know it? Their opponent this Monday night is their chief tormentor of the past several years – the Super Bowl XXXIX champion New England Patriots. More on that later. For now, let’s put the Colts’ accomplishment in its due perspective. This is only the 36th time in the NFL’s 86-year history that a team has started a season at 7-0 (the Colts’ best start ever). To put that “36” in context, since the NFL’s inception in 1920, there have been 1,705 clubs that have played at least seven games in a season (counting the number of teams each season). That 36 who went 7-0 computes to .02 – two percent of all NFL teams. So the Colts’ 7-0 is rare indeed. The number of teams to begin a season 7-0 and beyond: SOME START! 2005 NFL Draft Recap: Our Report Card by MATTHEW HATFIELD
2005 NFL Draft Recap: Our Report Card BY MATTHEW HATFIELD Each year after the draft I like to hand out my report card on how each team did on draft weekend. As I’ve said before, drafting is an inexact science since you don’t know how many of these players are going to turn out. However, we like to breakdown which teams addressed their need areas and got football players who can make their team better. Also, which teams failed to do so, bringing their overall grade down compared to the other teams. Without furthermore, here are my team grades for the 2005 NFL Draft… Arizona Cardinals (6-10): By far, the best draft in the entire NFL for 2005. No, not a misprint, nor have I finally gone off the deep end! Dennis Green showed why once again why he’s not only one of the best talent evaluators in the National Football League, but possibly the very best. As we correctly projected ,Green took Miami (FL) corner Antrel Rolle (121Tack. 3Int. last two seasons). An exceptional corner blitzer and wonderful in run support, Rolle is a guy teams throw away from and Arizona also has the luxury of using him at free safety if need be. I really love their second round pick, JUCO transfer J.J. Arrington of Cal, a 5-8 tailback that ran for over 2000 yards last season. Compact runner with the ability to catch the ball out of the backfield and get good yards per carry (7.0YPC last season). Then you get to the state of Virginia where the Cardinals took Hokies corner Eric Green, UVA OLB Darryl Blackstock, and 6-4 329 pound Cavs guard Elton Brown.
