Another Kind of Life: Photography on the Margins
Another Kind of Life: Photography on the Margins Barbican Art Gallery, Barbican Centre, UK 28 February – 27 May 2018 Media View, Tuesday 27 February, 10am – 1pm The exhibition is supported by The Great Britain Sasakawa Foundation and The Swiss Arts Council Pro Helvetia. Media Partner: AnOther Magazine #AnotherKindofLife Another Kind of Life: Photography on the Margins looks at the continuing fascination of artists with those on the margins of society through the photographic medium. Some of the most powerful images of the 20th and 21st century are the result of a determined and often prolonged engagement with communities seemingly at odds with, or on the fringes of, the mainstream. Another Kind of Life explores photography’s relationship with this compelling subject through the work of 20 exceptional image-makers, including Bruce Davidson, Paz Errázuriz, Casa Susanna, Larry Clark, Mary Ellen Mark, Boris Mikhailov, Daido Moriyama and Dayanita Singh. Part of the Barbican’s 2018 season The Art of Change, which reflects on the dialogue between art, society and politics, the exhibition directly – and at times poetically – addresses difficult questions about what it means to exist in the margins, the role artists have played in portraying subcultures and the complex intermingling between artistic and mainstream depictions of the outsider. Another Kind of Life opens at Barbican Art Gallery on 28 February 2018. Jane Alison, Head of Visual Arts, Barbican, said: ‘Barbican Art Gallery has always championed groundbreaking photography, placing it at the heart of our programme with recent highlights including Constructing Worlds: Photography and Architecture in the Modern Age (2014) and Strange and Familiar: Britain as Revealed by International Photographers(2016). -

SAVOY COMMUNICATIONS Jim Van Slyke Releases New Studio Recording the Sedaka Sessions Neil Sedaka Duets on Two Cuts
SAVOY COMMUNICATIONS Jim Van Slyke Releases New Studio Recording The Sedaka Sessions Neil Sedaka Duets on Two Cuts Los Angeles – August 4- LML Music is excited to announce the August 9th release of award winning performer Jim Van Slyke’s new recording, The Sedaka Sessions. The disc is a joyful, powerful tribute to one of pop music’s living legends, featuring two duets with Neil Sedaka himself. The CD showcases music from Van Slyke's critically acclaimed Sedaka Show, which Mr. Sedaka first saw him perform at the Laurie Beechman Theater in New York City. Impressed and touched, Sedaka offered his assistance and a ringing endorsement: “Jim Van Slyke is something quite special. I’ve heard others sing my songs, but nobody has moved me more than Jim. The voice, the stage presence…just brilliant. He is a songwriter’s dream!” – Neil Sedaka, 2011 The Sedaka Sessions repertoire was culled from 50+ years of Sedaka’s legendary collaborations with Howard Greenfield and Phil Cody (the single exception being “Workin’ on a Groovy Thing” which was written with Roger Atkins). Van Slyke's fresh readings of the timeless tunes make you wonder why you don’t hear brilliant songs like “The Hungry Years”, “Laughter in the Rain” and “Solitaire” more often. The icing on the cake is Mr. Sedaka’s appearance the CD, with duets on “Brighton” and “The Immigrant.” Van Slyke worked extensively on the repertoire of the live Sedaka Show with co- creator, Brian Lane Green, and then musical arranger, Tim DiPasqua, sharing hundreds of song possibilities and ideas about pacing, tempos, lyrics etc. -

This Book Is a Compendium of New Wave Posters. It Is Organized Around the Designers (At Last!)
“This book is a compendium of new wave posters. It is organized around the designers (at last!). It emphasizes the key contribution of Eastern Europe as well as Western Europe, and beyond. And it is a very timely volume, assembled with R|A|P’s usual flair, style and understanding.” –CHRISTOPHER FRAYLING, FROM THE INTRODUCTION 2 artbook.com French New Wave A Revolution in Design Edited by Tony Nourmand. Introduction by Christopher Frayling. The French New Wave of the 1950s and 1960s is one of the most important movements in the history of film. Its fresh energy and vision changed the cinematic landscape, and its style has had a seminal impact on pop culture. The poster artists tasked with selling these Nouvelle Vague films to the masses—in France and internationally—helped to create this style, and in so doing found themselves at the forefront of a revolution in art, graphic design and photography. French New Wave: A Revolution in Design celebrates explosive and groundbreaking poster art that accompanied French New Wave films like The 400 Blows (1959), Jules and Jim (1962) and The Umbrellas of Cherbourg (1964). Featuring posters from over 20 countries, the imagery is accompanied by biographies on more than 100 artists, photographers and designers involved—the first time many of those responsible for promoting and portraying this movement have been properly recognized. This publication spotlights the poster designers who worked alongside directors, cinematographers and actors to define the look of the French New Wave. Artists presented in this volume include Jean-Michel Folon, Boris Grinsson, Waldemar Świerzy, Christian Broutin, Tomasz Rumiński, Hans Hillman, Georges Allard, René Ferracci, Bruno Rehak, Zdeněk Ziegler, Miroslav Vystrcil, Peter Strausfeld, Maciej Hibner, Andrzej Krajewski, Maciej Zbikowski, Josef Vylet’al, Sandro Simeoni, Averardo Ciriello, Marcello Colizzi and many more. -

As he has done for every edition of The Americans , Frank changed the cropping of many of the photographs, usually including more information, and two slightly different photographs were used. Much of the criticism Frank faced was as well related to his photojournalistic style, wherein the immediacy of the hand-held camera introduced technical imperfections into the resulting images. It could seem as if Frank threw his Leica into the world and let it catch what it could, which happened, without fail, to be something exciting—fascination, pain, hilarity, disgust, longing.
