März 2020 – Nach dem ersten Spieltag in der Qualifikationspartie um die Teilnahme an den Davis Cup-Finals steht es zwischen Deutschland und Weißrussland 1:1. Jan-Lennard Struff bezwang zum Auftakt im Düsseldorfer Castello zunächst Ilya Ivashka mit 6:4, 6:4, ehe Philipp Kohlschreiber mit 6:4, 5:7, 6:7 (3:7) Egor Gerasimov unterlag. Im Eröffnungsmatch der Davis Cup-Begegnung zwischen Deutschland und Weißrussland erwischte die deutsche Nummer eins Jan-Lennard Struff (ATP 34) einen guten Start gegen Ilya Ivashka (ATP 138). Bei 3:3 schaffte er das für den ersten Durchgang vorentscheidende Break. Im zweiten Satz gelang es Struff früh, seinem Gegner den Aufschlag abzunehmen. Das vierte Spiel war hart umkämpft und ging sechs Mal über Einstand, ehe der 29-jährige Warsteiner mit einem Ass auf 3:1 davonziehen konnte. Nach einer konzentrierten Leistung verwandelte er nach 1:20 Stunden gleich den ersten Matchball zum 6:4, 6:4-Sieg und dem 1:0 für Deutschland. „Ilya hat heute sehr gut gespielt und beim Return viel Druck gemacht, aber ich habe gut dagegengehalten. Auch wenn der erste Aufschlag bei mir heute nicht so gut gekommen ist, konnte ich das Match aktiv und aggressiv gestalten“, so Struff. „Als Nummer eins der Mannschaft in ein Heimspiel zu gehen, ist sehr schön, aber ich wollte unbedingt ein gutes Match zeigen und den ersten Punkt für das Team und für Deutschland holen. Es war also eine gewisse Nervosität vorhanden, aber das ist okay und ich bin damit gut umgegangen.“ Anschließend ging Philipp Kohlschreiber (ATP 73) auf den Center Court im Castello.
