    Theological Studies 61 (2000) THE ORDINATION OF WOMEN IN THE EARLY MIDDLE AGES GARY MACY [The author analyzes a number of references to the ordination of women in the early Middle Ages in light of the meaning given to ordination at that time and in the context of the ministries of early medieval women. The changing definition of ordination in the twelfth century is then assessed in view of contemporary shifts in the understanding of the sacraments. Finally, a brief commentary is presented on the historical and theological significance of this ma- terial.] N HER PROVOCATIVE WORK, The Lady was a Bishop, Joan Morris argued I that the great mitered abbesses of the Middle Ages were treated as equivalent to bishops. In partial support of her contention, she quoted a capitulum from the Mozarabic Liber ordinum that reads “Ordo ad ordin- andam abbatissam.”1 Despite this intriguing find, there seems to have been no further research into the ordination of women in the early Middle Ages. A survey of early medieval documents demonstrates, however, how wide- spread was the use of the terms ordinatio, ordinare, and ordo in regard to the commissioning of women’s ministries during that era. The terms are used not only to describe the installation of abbesses, as Morris noted, but also in regard to deaconesses and to holy women, that is, virgins, widows, GARY MACY is professor in the department of theology and religious studies at the University of San Diego, California. Because the women deliberately break Canon Law—and specifically c. 1024, which reads, “Only a baptized man can validly receive sacred ordination”—RCWP acknowledges that its ordinations are illegal, but the group claims nonetheless to perform valid ordinations because they stand in the traditional line of apostolic succession. They retain the modifier “Roman” to signal their lineage within Roman Catholic tradition, yet RCWP’s stated goal is not simply to insert women into the existing Church structures, but rather to “re-imagine, re-structure, and re-shape the priesthood and therefore the church.” This dissertation investigates the

    THE ORDINATION OF WOMEN: THE EXPERIENCE OF FOUR EUROPEAN CHURCHES by Aulikki Nahkola Newbold College, England October 1987 INTRODUCTION The intention of this paper is to look at the experience of some European churches with the ordination of women. Four churches, repre- senting three denominations, have been chosen for study. The Baptist Union of Great Britain and Ireland portrays a church where the ordination of women has been "around" for decades already and where the interest has shifted from theological debates to evaluating the church's experience with its women clergy. The Lutheran world communion, that has to a large extend opted for women in priesthood, is represented by two Nordic state churches: in the case of the Church of Sweden we will try to look at some of the causes contributing to the painful "Swedish problem", while in the Lutheran Church of Finland we will trace a recently made, more hopeful decision, to ordain but also to stay together as a church. Finally, the Church of England will be looked at in the context of - even in comparison to - the Anglican world communion and and will be seen as a church that is still right in the middle of making its decision for or against the ordination of women. I BAPTISTS - The Baptist Union of Great Britain and Ireland Women in ordained ministry has been an established fact for almost 30 years in the Baptist Union of Great Britain and Ireland. The interest within the church is now focusing on how the transition has taken place. 1 2 Has it been smooth? How have women adapted to their clerical roles and the churches to their clergywomen? In this section, after looking briefly at how ordination came about among British Baptists, we will focus on the current discussion and self-evaluation of the church's experience with women in ministry.

    Reasons for Questioning Women’s Ordination in the Light of Scripture The Rev. Dr. Rodney A. Whitacre © 20141 What guidance does the Bible give us for whether or not women should be ordained? The answer seemed clear until developments in the past century or so as women’s roles have changed in society. These developments have helped us look at Scripture with new eyes. It now seems clear that the Church has not always been faithful to the fullness of the biblical witness to the dignity of women and the ministry God would have them exercise. Certainly the chief honor God has given woman as bearer and nourisher of life has been affirmed, but this is not the full extent of how we see women serving God in the Scriptures. The increasing role of women in society, as they have jobs and positions of leadership formerly reserved for the most part for men, raises the question of whether the same should be true in the Church.2 Pentecostal churches have ordained women for over a century, and many of the mainline Protestant churches have begun to do so, especially since the 1970s. But other Protestant churches, as well as the Roman Catholic Church and the Eastern Orthodox churches, have not followed suit.     REASON AND THE ORDINATION OF WOMEN TO THE PRIESTHOOD AND EPISCOPATE INTRODUCTION First impressions can be very powerful, but they can also be quite mistaken. When the ordination of women to the priesthood and episcopate emerged as a significant issue and serious possibility in the Episcopal Church, USA, the concept was accepted prima facie as reasonable by most Episcopalians. Opponents of the practice of the ordination of women to the priesthood and episcopate cited its lack of consistency with the thrust of Holy Scripture, its incompatibility with holy tradition and its deleterious effects on ecumenical relations. However, there was a general willingness, even by those who doubted or disputed its validity, to concede that reason appeared to support the notion. After all, it could be argued, if a woman could be a head of state or hold any number of other leadership positions, why should her gender restrict her from the presbyterate or the episcopate? Regarding this part of the argument traditionalists could cite only a vague, intuitive unease with the idea. These reservations were dismissed by its proponents as either simply a reflexive resistance to change or as an expression of paternalistic bigotry. It was assumed that the passage of time, the retirement and death of clergy who questioned the validity of women's ordination, and the experience of encountering women successfully acting in priestly and episcopal ministry would eventually sweep aside these objections. However, now that the Episcopal Church has had 25 years of experience of the practice, a more measured assessment of the relationship between theological reason and women's ordination to the priesthood and episcopate can now be made.

Acts 17:20-22 ASV We sit at the beginning of the third millennium. It is a time of new things. The world around us is changing in myriad ways. Like it or not, it is a new age, a time of innovation and reinvention. As an example, in this new age we are supposed to embrace a new way of referring to the present time. Use of the term A.D. (“in the year of our Lord”) is discouraged; instead, C.E. (meaning “the Common Era”) is the new preferred way of speaking of the present age. Culturally and socially we are more and more in an environment that cares nothing for the things of the Church Catholic. In a time of new things, the Episcopal Church has embraced a number of “new things” of her own, not the least of which is the admittance of women into the ranks of the ordained ministry, specifically to the priesthood and episcopate. How new is it, and how did we get here? In the early church there did appear to be an order of women ministers set apart for servant ministry in the Church, primarily for the purpose of ministering to women.
