Newsletter/Pānui 19 04 December 2017 Newsletter/Pānui 19 04 December 2017 Kia ora whanau We are having such a lovely run of fabulous weather as the end of the school year draws to a close. It is certainly sun screen and sunhat weather. This week there are lots of celebratory events on so lets hope the weather holds. Reports will be sent home on Wednesday this week. Class lists for 2018 and stationery lists will follow on Friday. Thank you all so much for your awesome support of the MegaFair. We were delighted with the turn out and the positive vibe that was around. It was lots of fun and we raised around $15,000!!! WOW! A massive thank you to the PTA who put in a huge amount of work to make sure it was a success – THANK YOU! Check out the photos on the following pages. School survey - The 2016 Community Survey supported the adoption of a Māori name to work alongside Hoon Hay School. This year the whānau hui, with help and advice from Corban Te Aika (Mana Whenua facilitator for Grow Waitaha) and David Perenara- O'Connell, decided on two options, for consideration, which reflect the geographical and historical story of the Hoon Hay Area. We are asking your preference through the school survey this year. Here is the link - https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/VKPXSNF A bit of background for you. Cultural Narrative for Te Reo Name for Hoon Hay School - Historically, the area that Hoon Hay Primary sits on would have been a mix of swampy marsh amongst Kahikatea forest. Along Hoon Hay Road was sandbank/dry plain ridge that extended out towards Wigram where it joined up with another historic dry plain which extended from Westlake to South Halswell. Between these dry plains and the Port Hills was a large swampland, often referred to today as the Henderson Basin. This description of the historic natural environment of the area has formed the basis for the two options from which to decide on a te reo name for Hoon Hay School. OPTION 1 : Te Kura Kōaka Translated means The School of the Kōaka (Ngāi Tahu name for kahikatea/white pine). This name recognises the presence of the stands of kōaka that were once present in the area. The kōaka tree is noted for their need to grow together, interlacing their root systems in order to grow strong and tall within a swampy environment. The way the kōaka develops can be compared to the way our Hoon Hay students grow, learn and support each other to be the best each can be while also contributing to an overall strong school community. Use of the word Kura also makes a direct connection to Te Iringa o Kahukura (Sugarloaf) which is a prominent mountain seen from the school and features in the kōwhaiwhai design on the school kapa haka uniforms. OPTION 2: Te Motu Raupō Translated means the Bullrush Promenade/Island. This name reflects on the abundance of raupō (bull rush) that populated the swampy areas found near the school. Raupō was an important resource for Ngāi Tahu. It was used to build whare (houses), mōkihi (rafts for crossing lakes and traveling on rivers), clothing, sandals and flour was produced from the seed head. The versatility and resilience of the raupō are attributes that can be found in our Hoon Hay students, each applying themselves in different ways and ultimately choosing career paths that make the best use of their knowledge and skills. The school, as a motu/island, provides a haven for students and a gathering place for families of the surrounding community. Some sad news – Judy McNeil passed away last week. She was William McNeil’s grandmother and a treasured volunteer here at the school, and we loved the opportunity to get to know her. Our thoughts are with the McNeil family. Congratualtions to Evie McL who came 1st place in the Hoon Hay Fiesta talent quest Fair Photos Fair Photos MIGHTY MINNOWS ATHLETICS DAY - What a wonderful morning the junior level of our school had, taking part in lots of sporting athletic activities. Senior students help run the day and it was awesome to see Rm 19 children doing such a great job inspiring and helping the younger students. Check out the smiles on these faces. More photos from the day can be found in the media gallery on the sports page of our school web site. CENTRAL ATHLETICS - 6TH DECEMBER - Good luck to the following children; Jamie P, Sophie Y, Sam H, Keira R, Austin MS, Eliza G, Tabi C and Rhiannon M who are competing next week at the Ashburton Domain. The children will be competing against 2000 competitors from the wider Canterbury area and the West Coast. Good luck children. You have been training hard andwe hope your efforts are rewarded with some personal best results. Our team is competing in sprints, discus, shot put and long distance events. GOOD LUCK - GO HOON HAY!!!! CRICKET & TOUCH RUGBY - Our two cricket teams have now completed their short season. The children have learnt some new skills and enjoyed playing against other schools. While we may not have scooped a cricket win this season, the children’s knowledge and cricket skills have grown. Our touch teams have two more games to play with the last game being played on the 14th December. WEET-BIX KIDS TRYATHLON - The Weetbix kids TRYathlon takes place at Jellie Park Pool on Sunday 25th February 2018. This is a very popular event. Entries for this are now open online and will close when full. You are eligible for a school discounted rate when entering.     St Peter’s, Upper Riccarton, is the graveyard of owners and trainers of the great horses of the racing and trotting worlds. People buried here have been in charge of horses which have won the A. J. C. Derby, the V.R.C. Derby, the Oaks, Melbourne Cup, Cox Plate, Auckland Cup (both codes), New Zealand Cup (both codes) and Wellington Cup. Area 1 Row A Robert John Witty. Robert John Witty (‘Peter’ to his friends) was born in Nelson in 1913 and attended Christchurch Boys’ High School, College House and Canterbury College. Ordained priest in 1940, he was Vicar of New Brighton, St. Luke’s and Lyttelton. He reached the position of Archdeacon. Director of the British Sailors’ Society from 1945 till his death, he was, in 1976, awarded the Queen’s Service Medal for his work with seamen. Unofficial exorcist of the Anglican Diocese of Christchurch, Witty did not look for customers; rather they found him. He said of one Catholic lady: “Her priest put her on to me; they have a habit of doing that”. Problems included poltergeists, shuffling sounds, knockings, tapping, steps tramping up and down stairways and corridors, pictures turning to face the wall, cold patches of air and draughts. Witty heard the ringing of Victorian bells - which no longer existed - in the hallway of St. Luke’s vicarage. He thought that the bells were rung by the shade of the Rev. Arthur Lingard who came home to die at the vicarage then occupied by his parents, Eleanor and Archdeacon Edward Atherton Lingard. In fact, Arthur was moved to Miss Stronach’s private hospital where he died on 23 December 1899.

The story of the foundation and early growth of Canterbury was first told to me, bit by bit, more than thirty years ago, some of it by men and women who had actually taken part in the founding of the settlement, and shaping its destiny, and some by late-comers, who had followed closely on the heels of the pioneers. There were many people then living who delighted in talking of their strenuous life in the pioneering days, " when all the world was young," and in telling of events which are now passing into silent history. Many of the stories I heard then are still vivid in my memory, little episodes illustrating the daily life of a community which had to do everything for itself survey, settle, stock and till the land, build its own roads, bridges and railways, form its own religious, educa- tional, political and social institutions, and construct its own local government. It is no wonder that coming from the valley of the Thames, where the results of centuries of civilisation had come to be accepted as the natural condition of nineteenth century existence, I found the contrast interesting and inspiring. My wife and I were received with the kindly hospi- tality so typical of the time and country. Amongst our immediate neighbours at Upper Riccarton were many old settlers. Mr.
