  • Attukal Pongala Campaign Strategy
Attukal Pongala Campaign Strategy Attukal Pongala 2019 Attukal Pongala is a 10-day festival celebrated at the Attukal Temple, Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, India, during which there is a huge gathering of millions of women on the ninth day. This is the lighting of the Pongala hearth (called Pandarayaduppu) placed inside the temple by the chief priest. The festival is marked as the largest annual gathering of 2.5 million women by the Guinness World Records in 2009. This is the earliest Pongala festival in Kerala. This temple is also known by the name Sabarimala of women. Mostly Attukal Pongala falls in the month of March or April. Trivandrum Municipal Corporation successfully implemented green protocol for the third time with the help of the Health Department and Green Army International. The need of Green Pongala About 4 years back the amount of waste collected at the end of Attukal Pongala used to measure around 350 tons. Corporation took steps to spread messages of Green Protocol to the devotees and food distributers more effectively with the help of the Green Army. In 2016 Corporation brought this measure down to about 170 tons. Corporation continued to give out Green Protocol messages and warnings throughout the year. And the measure came down to 85 tons in 2017 and 75 tons in 2018. After the years of reduction in waste, Presently, this year, in 2019 the waste has reduced as much as 65 Tons. The numbers show the reason and need for Green Protocol implementation for festivals. It could be understood that festivals or huge gatherings of people anywhere can bring about a huge amount of wastes in which the mixing of food wastes and other materials makes handling of wastes difficult or literally impossible.

Known to be the largest congregation of women in the world, the festival is celebrated in the Malayalam month of Kumbham to invoke and seek the blessings of Goddess Parvati or Attukal Bhagavathy, the presiding deity of the temple. Women prepare offerings on hearths on the Pongala day to please the Goddess symbolising balance of the five elements of nature. Legend has it that the festival is celebrated to commemorate the hospitality that the local children and people extended to the Goddess while at Attukal. There are stories that associate her to Kannagi, the central character of the famous Tamil epic ‘Silapathikaram.’ Kannagi is said to have stopped over at Attukal for a short while after avenging the unjust death of her husband. Kannagi is believed to be an incarnation of Goddess Parvati. The Goddess hence epitomises power, courage and destruction of evil even as devotees look up to her as the Supreme Mother.

  • Draft Industrial Potential Survey
DRAFT INDUSTRIAL POTENTIAL SURVEY DISTRICT :THIRUVANANTHAPURAM Introduction Thiruvananthapuram District is the southernmost district of the coastal state of Kerala, in south India. It came into existence in the year 1957. The headquarters is the city of Thiruvananthapuram (Trivandrum) which is also the capital city of Kerala. Thiruvananthapuram city and several other places in the district loom large in ancient tradition, folklore and literature. In 1684, during the regency of Umayamma Rani, the English East India Company obtained a sandy spit of land at Anchuthengu near Varkala on the sea coast about 32 kilometres (20 mi) north of Thiruvananthapuram city, with a view to erecting a factory and fortifying it. The place had earlier been frequented by the Portuguese and later by the Dutch. It was from here that the English gradually extended their domain to other parts of Travancore. Modern history begins with Marthanda Varma, 1729 CE – 1758 CE, who is generally regarded as the Father of modern Travancore. Thiruvananthapuram was known as a great centre of intellectual and artistic activities in those days. "Thiruvananthapuram" literally means "City of Lord Anantha". The name derives from the deity of the Hindu temple at the center of the Thiruvananthapuram city. Anantha is the mythical thousand hooded serpent- Shesha on whom Padmanabhan or Vishnu reclines. The temple of Vishnu reclining on Anantha, the Sri Padmanabhaswamy temple, which dates back to the 16th century, is the most-recognizable iconic landmark of the city as well as the district. Along with the presiding deity of SriPadmanabha, this temple also has temples inside it, dedicated to Lord Krishna and Lord Narasimha, Lord Ganesha, and Lord Ayyappa.

Editors' Introduction Schüssler Fiorenza, Elisabeth, 1938-, Pui-lan Kwok Journal of Feminist Studies in Religion, Volume 21, Number 1, Spring 2005, pp. 1-4 (Article) Published by Indiana University Press DOI: https://doi.org/10.1353/jfs.2005.0006 For additional information about this article https://muse.jhu.edu/article/183427 [ This content has been declared free to read by the pubisher during the COVID-19 pandemic. ] Editors’ Introduction The contributions to this dynamic and variegated issue focus for the most part on issues in feminist political analysis and practice. They explore how the political shapes feminist scholarship and women’s position in religion. The first three articles investigate in different ways how the political and the quest for power have an effect on women’s position and work in different religious con- texts: Judaism, Hinduism, and Christian Roman Catholic biblical scholarship. These three articles are followed by a review essay, “The Christian Right’s Dis- course on Gender and the Bible,” which analyzes the political strategies of the Christian Right in the United States. The different responses to the lead-in ar- ticle of the roundtable discussion titled “Feminist Studies in Religion and The*logy In-Between Nationalism and Globalization” focus on how the politi- cal discourse of nationalism affects and influences feminist theological work in different social-geographical locations. We conclude the issue with a Living It Out article that critically reflects on the author’s experience and work to bring about political change. These essays, which explore the power play between politics and religion, are deepened in the section In a Different Voice by a rich range of poetry that continues to sound the same melody of struggle, gender, and power.
