The Catholic Church in the Czech Lands During the Nazi
STUDIA HUMANITATIS JOURNAL, 2021, 1 (1), pp. 192-208 ISSN: 2792-3967 DOI: https://doi.org/10.53701/shj.v1i1.22 Artículo / Article THE CATHOLIC CHURCH IN THE CZECH LANDS DURING THE NAZI OCCUPATION IN 1939–1945 AND AFTER1 LA IGLESIA CATÓLICA EN LOS TERRITORIOS CHECOS DURANTE LA OCUPACIÓN NAZI ENTRE LOS AÑOS 1939–1945 Y DESPUÉS Marek Smid Charles University, Czech Republic ORCID: 0000-0001-8613-8673 [email protected] | Abstract | This study addresses the religious persecution in the Czech lands (Bohemia, Moravia and Czech Silesia) during World War II, when these territories were part of the Bohemian and Moravian Protectorate being occupied by Nazi Germany. Its aim is to demonstrate how the Catholic Church, its hierarchy and its priests acted as relevant patriots who did not hesitate to stand up to the occupying forces and express their rejection of their procedures. Both the domestic Catholic camp and the ties abroad towards the Holy See and its representation will be analysed. There will also be presented the personalities of priests, who became the victims of the Nazi rampage in the Czech lands at the end of the study. The basic method consists of a descriptive analysis that takes into account the comparative approach of the spiritual life before and after the occupation. Furthermore, the analytical-synthetic method will be used, combined with the subsequent interpretation of the findings. An additional method, not always easy to apply, is hermeneutics, i.e., the interpretation of socio-historical phenomena in an effort to reveal the uniqueness of the analysed texts and sources and emphasize their singularity in the cultural and spiritual development of Czech Church history in the first half of the 20th century. -
Mission: Apostolic Nuncio in Prague Or More Precisely Czech, Perception of the Holy See
Marek Šmíd Marek In this book, the author gets to the heart of Czechoslovak-Vatican relations, the personalities of the apostolic nuncios, and their further activities. Thanks to Vatican records—in as far as they allow—the author has been able to penetrate the minds, attitudes, and moods of the relevant apostolic nuncios. The richness and diversity of Czech Cover archives has enabled him to understand the | difficult relations between the Vatican and the Czechoslovak state, and the Czechoslovak, Prague in Nuncio Apostolic Mission: or more precisely Czech, perception of the Holy See. Finally, the available German and Austrian archives offer an interesting perspective on Czechoslovak-Vatican relations from the outside—from the point of view of non-participating and yet involved parties. Religious Freedom in the Papacy of Pope Benedict XVI. Seven Years of Interventions Before the UN
K O S ´ CIELNE PRAWO PUBLICZNE __________________________________________________________ KOS ´ CIÓ Đ I PRAWO 2(15) 2013, s. 157-206 Alfonso Riobó RELIGIOUS FREEDOM IN THE PAPACY OF POPE BENEDICT XVI SEVEN YEARS OF INTERVENTIONS BEFORE THE UN In this text I would like to present the most important aspects of the interventions made by the representatives of the Holy See before the United Nations dealing with religious freedom, in the seven years since Benedict XVI was called to the Papal throne. Joseph Ratzinger was named Pope on the 19 th of April 2005; since then, in many parts of the World, difficulties with regard to religious freedom have increased or acquired new forms, as can be seen in the issues and the approach taken by the Mission of the Holy See; the spe- cific aim of this paper is to highlight those aspects considered of most importance. As a date of reference for this study I have chosen the month of April 2012, exactly seven years into the papacy of Benedict XVI: indeed, the last document examined for this paper is an inter- vention made precisely on the 19 th of April, the seventh anniversary of the election, made by the Apostolic Nuncio and Permanent Observer at the UN, Msgr. Chulikatt, which, significantly, addressed the notion of religious freedom as part of the work of the Pontifical Mission. The present paper aims to approach the issues dealt with by the de- legation of the Holy See and offer an overall view. To this end, I have studied the texts, grouped them into categories and added a systema- tic order which, for obvious reasons, the statements of the Papal Mis- sion do not have, given their nature and aim. -
St Peter and St Paul's Cathedral in Tallinn
St Peter and St Paul’s Cathedral in Tallinn The History of Catholicism in Tallinn If you ask a passer-by in Tallinn where the Roman Catholic cathedral of St Peter and St Paul is, the chances are that you may not get an answer. Many people who live in Tallinn do not know that there is a Catholic church in Tallinn and likewise many Estonians do not know that there are Catholics in Estonia. Catholicism seems to belong to the distant past, to the romantic Middle Ages: after all, Lutheranism has been the dominant religion in Estonia for centuries! However, Catholicism has a centuries-long history in Estonia and it is alive and well today. Catholicism was prevalent in North Estonia, from 1227 to 1561, and in South Estonia even longer, from 1227 to 1626, until that territory also fell under Swedish rule. All surviving medieval chapels and churches in Estonia were once Catholic places of worship. The recorded history of Catholicism in Tallinn goes back to the year 1219, when the Danish King Valdemar II arrived in Tallinn with a large army and established a stronghold for subjugating North Estonia. He was accompanied by Andreas Sunesen, the Archbishop of Lund, the Estonian bishop Theoderich and other two bishops, together with a number of priests, who were to Christianise the people to be subdued. Immediately, the construction of a church began at Toompea, which preceded the present Dome Church. In 1229 monks belonging to the Dominican Order arrived in Tallinn from Denmark who founded their monastery at Toompea. Soon after the brothers were forced to leave, but they were able to return to Toompea in 1246, and they resumed their activities in 1260’s in the place where today the Cathedral of St Peter and St Paul is located. -
