I have learned not only from my teachers but even more from my peers, the ever-inspiring IUDD Bubble. I am also thankful that this journey led me to this thesis topic, which has been an eye-opening experience in many terms. First of all, I would like to thank my supervisors Prof. Sven Schneider and Prof. Sigrun Kabisch for their insightful comments at every junction and express my gratitude towards Raphael Karutz for guiding me throughout the entire project since its inception. I am also thankful to Pune-based NGO MASHAL for helping me connect to the interviewees and I am grateful to the interviewees for giving their valuable time, especially during this tough time of the COVID pandemic. The thesis would not have been possible without their help. Last but not the least, I can’t thank enough my family, Gagan, and Poi who have supported me during this journey, through the many ups and downs. Subhashree Nath 3 Abstract Liveability studies are mostly limited to formal settlements, whereas in emerging economies like India, a large proportion of the population lives in informal settlements. Lack of liveability studies for informal settlements often lead to the assumption that ensuring safer housing structure and providing basic services like household-level water, sanitation, and electricity, inevitably leads to an improved living experience. Consequently, slum upgrading schemes rarely consider improvement in liveability as one of the criteria. The research paper addresses this knowledge gap by studying the change in liveability perceptions of residents when they move to upgraded housing. It hypothesises that liveability indicators related to community ties are most influential and despite improvement in housing quality and basic services, community ties are lost when up-gradation is done through relocation or redevelopment to a multi-storey housing. The goal of the study is to develop a method to understand residents’ perception of the quality of life and the influence of individual liveability indicators on one another, to find the most central indicator which can work as performance leverage for improving overall liveability. The method developed includes interviewing residents to elicit the causal relationship between each indicator and analysing it through Fuzzy Cognitive Maps to find the most influential (central) indicator. Three residents each from four settlement types were interviewed: Slums with no intervention, Slums in-situ upgraded through retrofitting, Slums Rehabilitated through resettlement in a new location, and Slums upgraded in-situ by redeveloping a multi-storey housing. The result of the analysis highlights the applicability of the method in highlighting areas of improvement which can act as a leverage for a better liveability in the upgraded settlement. 4 Slum FOR OFFICE USE ONLY GOVERNMENT OF MAHARASHTRA WATER RESOURCES DEPARTMENT HYDROLOGY PROJECT (SW) ANNUAL REPORT WATER QUALITY LABORATORY LEVEL-II PUNE YEAR 2011 SUPRINTENDING ENGINEER DATA COLLECTION, PLANNING & HYDROLOGY CIRCLE, NASHIK EXECUTIVE ENGINEER, HYDROLOGY PROJECT DIVISION, PUNE-1 PREFACE India is rich in water resources, being endowed with a network of rivers and blessed with snow cover in the Himalayan range that can meet a variety of water requirements of the country. However, with the rapid increase in the population of the country and the need to meet the increasing demands of irrigation, human and industrial consumption, the available water resources in many parts of the country are getting depleted and the water quality has deteriorated. Indian rivers are polluted due to the discharge of untreated sewage and industrial effluents. There are thirteen major river basins (area more than 20,000 square kilometer) in the country, which occupy 82.4% of total drainage basins, contribute eighty five percent of total surface flow and eighty percent of the country's population. Major river basins are Brahmaputra, Ganga, Godavari, Krishna, Mahanadi, Narmada, Cauvery, and Tapi. This report includes water quality data in Rivers Krishna, Bhima and its Tributaries for the period of June 2010 to May 2011 by the agency M/s. Mahabal Enviro Engineers Pvt. Ltd. as awarded a contract towards Operation and Maintenance of Water Quality Lab Level-II, Pune for the said period. The data has been interpreted to known the affected locations.
