Cast: Christopher Lambert, Roxanne Hart, Clancy Brown, Sean Connery. Summary: Action/fantasy set in sixteenth century Scotland and contemporary New York City. A race of immortals battles each other over the centuries, fighting to be the sole survivor and win ‘The Prize’ of mortality. The Highlander, Connor MacLeod (Lambert), has been alive since 1536 where he fought for his clan against his nemesis, Kurgan. The only way an immortal may be killed is to lose his head to a sword stroke. MacLeod, now living as an antiques dealer in Manhattan, is discovered by a woman police sword expert who eventually becomes the captive of Kurgan in order to lure MacLeod to a final confrontation. One of the characters who confronts Kurgan along the way is a Vietnam veteran. Attanasio, Paul. “Movies: ‘Highlander’: Terminal technique” Washington post (Mar 19, 1986), p. B9.

  • FORT WILLIAM to MALLAIG Experience the Breathtaking Beauty of the Scottish Western Highlands Aboard the World-Famous Jacobite Steam Train and Its Vintage Carriages
West Coast Railways Presents FAMOUS STEAM TRAIN 2021 Season FORT WILLIAM TO MALLAIG Experience the breathtaking beauty of the Scottish Western Highlands aboard the World-famous Jacobite Steam Train and its vintage carriages. “The World’s Greatest Railway Journey” THE JOURNEY Fort William to Mallaig Described as the greatest railway journey in the world, this 84 mile round trip takes you past a list of impressive extremes. Starting at the highest mountain in Britain, Ben Nevis, it visits Britain’s most westerly mainland railway station, Arisaig; passes close by the deepest freshwater loch in Britain, Loch Morar and the shortest river in Britain, River Morar, finally arriving next to the deepest seawater loch in Europe, Loch Nevis! The Train stops en route to Mallaig at the village of Glenfinnan. Beyond Glenfinnan are the beautiful villages of Lochailort, Arisaig, Morar and Mallaig. You may alight at Arisaig by request to the guard. From here, on a clear summer’s day, you can see the “Small Isles” of Rum, Eigg, Muck, Canna and the southern tip of Skye. The train continues on from here passing Morar and the silvery beaches used in the films “Highlander” and “Local Hero”. Come and join us and find out why! THE ROAD TO THE ISLES Following Harry Potter.... West Coast Railways, operators of ‘The Jacobite,’ provided the steam engine and carriages for the ‘Hogwarts Express’ as seen in ‘Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone’ and others in this wonderful series of films. Some of the carriages of ‘The Jacobite’ are similar to those used in the ‘Harry Potter’ films.

  • One Story, One Reader and Two Decades of Ongoing Appeal
Narrative Attraction: One Story, One Reader and Two Decades of Ongoing Appeal Warren Maynes and Margaret Mackey University of Alberta His wellbeing appears to need spectral entities to oppose it, figures of his own invention whom he can defeat. McEwan, Saturday, 2005, 78 Margaret: Imaginative commitment is an active energizer of our mental economy, but our understanding of how that process works is amorphous and cloudy. What is it that “captures” one person’s imagination while leaving another cold? What matrix of memories, desires, terrors and needs finds expression in a particular story or even in a particular turning point of a story, so that this story plays a significant role in the shaping of someone’s ways of responding to the world? Language and Literacy 1 Volume 8 Number 2 2007 Language and Literacy This article will explore the ramifications of these questions through the lens of one young man’s ongoing response to a single story, told through multiplying media. The story is Highlander, which first appeared as a movie in 1986 and has been retold and expanded through a variety of vehicles: novelizations, sequel movies, a lengthy television series, a card game, and so forth. The fan is Warren Maynes, a recent graduate of the School of Library and Information Studies at the University of Alberta, who made a class presentation on the subject of Highlander and its ongoing hold on his own imagination for nearly twenty years. I was the instructor of that class and I was intrigued at his insider perspective on questions of narrative fascination and connection that are often completely opaque to outsiders.

  • Video Killed the Radio Star«
in: Positionen. Beiträge zur Neuen Musik, 1994, 18, 7ff, © Autor von There is nothing in it, it's just a video. Peter Buck, R.E.M.

  • From Popular Music to Film and Digital Media
MUSC 499: The Music Video: From Popular Music to Film and Digital Media University of Southern California, Fall 2014 Tuesday, Thursday, 2:00-3:20 UUC B2 Instructor: Dr. Richard Brown Office: MUS 310 (Office Hour: T/Th 1-2pm) [email protected] www.richardhbrownjr.com Course Description: Since its emergence in the late 1970s, the music video has become the dominant means of advertising popular music and musicians, as well as one of the most influential multimedia genres in history. Music videos have affected aesthetic style in a wide range of film and television genres, introducing experimental and avant-garde techniques to a mass audience. Because most music videos last only a few minutes, it is difficult to make sense of their often-conflicting images, sounds, and messages. This course challenges participants to read music videos as texts by engaging with their visual and auditory materials. We will explore how the gender, race, and class of video participants shapes meaning, as well as how pacing and editing contribute to (or detract from) a narrative flow. We will also consider the music video in relation to notions of stardom and celebrity, and will speculate on the future of the music video amid drastic changes in the production and marketing of media. The second portion of the course applies these analytical skills to a wide variety of media, including video games, live concert films, film and television music placements, television title sequences and end credits, user generated content, YouTube, remixes and more. Course Materials: There is one required textbook available for free via USC’s electronic Ebook access: Carol Vernallis’ Experiencing Music Video: Aesthetics and Cultural Context (New York: Columbia University Press, 2004).

  • 5 Day Highlands, Isle of Skye and Inverness Tour
5 day Highlands, Isle of Skye and Inverness Tour Day 1 ➢ Our first stop is the mighty Stirling Castle and Wallace Monument. This commanding position at the foot of the Highland boundary has been fought over for thousands of years as a strategic point to control the entire country. ➢ We continue north/west into the Stirling Castle mountain wilderness to visit Etive Mor, an extinct super volcano known locally as “the Shepard of Glencoe”. Here we turn off the beaten path into Glen Etive for spectacular scenery and hopefully spot Red Deer in their native habitat. ➢ Next stop is Scotland’s most desired spot, Glencoe. Towering mountains on all sides and a bloody history make this an unforgettable experience to all who visit Glencoe ➢ Our final port of call is the town of Fort William at the foot of Britain’s highest mountain, Ben Nevis, where we stop for the evening. (Fort William will be our overnight stop). Day 2 ➢ We start the day with a visit to Thomas Telford’s engineering masterpiece, Neptune’s staircase. Constructed 200 years ago it’s part of the Caledonian Canal system. This series of 8 locks lifts boats some 70 ft from the sea level to Loch Lochy above. ➢ We then head west to Glenfinnan and Loch Shiel for one of Scotland’s finest views. Here we will see the Glenfinnan and Loch Sheil Glenfinnan viaduct which featured in Harry Potter and the Jacobite memorial. ➢ We continue along the spectacular road to the Isles and catch a ferry for the short journey from Mallaig to the Isle of Skye.
