Headmaster Deputy Headmaster Head of Senior School Head of Junior School Director of Studies Director of Sport & Activities Director of Boarding Director of Performance Library From the Library Cadets Careers Counsellor What a wonderful start to the year. It has been great to see so many students visit the library right from day one and using it well. Each TGS Boarder Parents’ Support Group day it is great to see our boys using the library space, working hard, School Notices playing chess and reading, all engaged in purposeful activity. As I tell the boys, they are incredibly lucky to be here, in a place that values and encourages reading. Reading is a life skill, so much deeper than simply enjoying a story. It opens the reader to other worlds and experiences, develops our brains and helps us interact with the world around us. I am privileged to have the opportunity to work with our boys and create an environment that will build these skills. Reading lessons are in full swing with all our Year 7 and 8 classes. Our first sessions involve becoming acquainted with the library facilities where we will be working on study and reading skills to prepare them for the year ahead. Later, these lessons will introduce the boys to new authors and genres and provide opportunities for the boys to discover the purpose of and encourage enjoyment in reading. Manga (Japanese Graphic Novels) are proving a popular choice among our readers to start the year. Readers are often attracted to Manga for the expressive artwork and rich storytelling. For those readers who have never seen them, the text is translated to English, but the reading order is right to left, backward compared to western texts. This provides an interesting hurdle for the boys when they first begin, however it also encourages them to think about ‘how’ they read, and it’s not long before they are comfortably reading through the collection. Some of the more popular titles have been My Hero Established 1875 Academia, Legend of Zelda, Nisekoi and the Dragon Ball series. I look forward to seeing what the rest of the year brings.
