Monday, Jun 13, 2016 OU Alumna Jayne Houdyshell wins 2016 Tony Award Oakland University Alumna Jayne Houdyshell has earned a 2016 Tony Award for Best Performance by an Actress in a Featured Role in a Play for her work in The Humans. Houdyshell’s nomination for the character of Deirdre Blake was one of six total nominations for The Humans, a play that began off-Broadway at its inception and has been playing at the Helen Hayes Theatre since February. The play revolves around a family’s Thanksgiving dinner in New York City. Houdyshell was in Tony Award competition in that category along with Pascale Armand and Saycon Sengbloh, from Eclipsed and Megan Hilty and Andrea Martin from Noises Off. OU alumna Jayne Houdyshell won her first Tony Award in the category of Best It was the third nomination and first win for Performance by an Actress in a Featured Role in a Play at the 2016 Tony Awards. Houdyshell, who was nominated in 2012 for Best Performance by an Actress in a Featured Role in a Musical for Follies and in 2006 for Best Featured Actress in a Play for her work in Well. The Humans was nominated for six awards overall and won four of them, including Best Play for author Stephen Karam, Best Performance by an Actor in a Featured Role in a Play for Reed Birney, Best Performance by an Actress in a Featured Role in a Play for Houdyshell and Best Scenic Design of a Play for David Zinn. The 70th annual Tony Awards was hosted by James Corden and broadcast live on CBS from New York's Beacon Theatre on June 12. This was Corden’s first time hosting the Tony Awards. He won a Tony in 2012 for Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Play for his performance in One Man, Two Guvnors. BROADWAY BOUND: Mezer’s Modest Proposals This piece comes to you compliments of ACREL Fellow Steve Mezer of Becker & Poliakoff who has a front row view of Broadway for several reasons. He is on the Board of the Straz Performing Arts Center in Tampa that invests in and presents Broadway shows. He is also a theater aficionado who spends his free time in NYC with his wife Karen bingeing on Broadway and Off Broadway musicals. Broadway theater is a unique American cultural experience. Other cities have vibrant theater scenes, but no other American venue offers Broadway’s range of options. I recommend that you come a day early and stay a date later for our Fall meeting in New York and take in a couple of Broadway shows. I grew up 90 miles outside of New York City; Broadway was and remains a family staple. I can neither sing nor dance, but I have a great appreciation for musical theater. So here are my recommendations: Musicals: 2016 was one of Broadway’s most successful years as it presented many original works and attracted unprecedented attention with Hamilton and its record breaking (secondary market) ticket prices. October is a transition month, an exciting time to see a new Broadway show. Holiday Inn, an Irving Berlin musical, begins previews September 1, and opens on October 6 at Studio 54. Jim (played by Bryce Pinkham) leaves his farm in Connecticut and meets Linda (Laura Lee Gayer) a school teacher brimming with talent. Together they turn a farmhouse into an inn with dazzling performances to celebrate each holiday.

AN EMPIRICAL STUDY OF THE DETERMINANTS OF THE RUN-TIMES OF BROADWAY MUSICALS A THESIS Presented to The Faculty of the Department of Economics and Business The Colorado College In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Bachelor of Arts By Katie Ferguson May 2011 AN EMPIRICAL STUDY OF THE DETERMINANTS OF THE RUN-TIMES OF BROADWAY MUSICALS Katie Ferguson May 2011 Mathematical Economics Abstract With an economic impact of $9.8 billion in the 2008-09 season alone, Broadway as an industry which should be economically studied. Currently there is a large gap in scholarly literature about Broadway with only three quantitative studies having been performed. This thesis aims to help fill this gap by building off of these three studies to determine which factors influence the success- measured as total days on Broadway from opening to closing night- of a Broadway musical. This thesis focuses specifically on musicals as they have been shown in all three empirical studies to have longer runs and a larger economic impact than Broadway plays. The econometric analysis finds many variables- such as a movie version of the musical being released, and winning the Tony for Best Musical- that are predictive of loner run times. Revivals are found to have substantially shorter run times than original runs and over time, musicals are lasting longer. Nederlander or “Jimmy,” Chairman of The Nederlander Organization, was the visionary theatrical impresario who built one of the largest private live entertainment companies in the world known for producing and presenting world-class entertainment since 1912.
