    © Copyrighted Material Chapter 9 ‘Across the Evening Sky’: The Late Voices of Sandy Denny, Judy Collins and Nina Simone Richard Elliott In 2006, shortly before her 67th birthday, the American singer-songwriter Judy Collins undertook a tour of Australia and New Zealand, her first visit to the region in forty years. A number of press features and interviews accompanied Collins’s visit, several of which were still featured at the top of the ‘Press’ section of the artist’s website at the time of writing this chapter. One of the features, entitled ‘Who Knows Where the Time Goes?’ after one of Collins’s 1960s hits, presented a reflection on the artist’s career alongside observations on age and assertions of continued vitality.1 Another, entitled ‘Gem of a Voice Shines On’, described some of Collins’s most successful performances, including her recording of Joni Mitchell’s ‘Both Sides Now’. ‘Its harpsichord tinkling has dated’, wrote the journalist, ‘but Collins’ voice, warm and wise beyond its years, renders the song timeless.’2 I use these examples because they provide a foretaste of the themes of age, time and experience with which I wish to engage in this chapter, as well as a reference to the song upon which I will base my observations. The first aspect to note is the way in which an artist of Collins’s longevity can afford to leave her website out of date in terms of publicity; the fact that the featured stories are seven years old at the time of access matters little when considering an artist whose performing career spans more than five decades.

Samara Scott IN CONVERSATION WITH GAVIN WADE 114 — SAMARA SCOTT — Rasbs Blubs Strawbs Glee is the exuberant title of one of Samara Scott’s exotically prosaic ar- tworks, the words borrowed and adapted from an enthusiastic café menu sign. The work itself appears like a close up of biological cells, squashed fruit or sexual organs but is in fact a jigsaw of Styrofoam wrapped in ladies tight toes and crotches. This transformative mirroring of lan- guage and materials is typical of Scott’s atypical artworks that sit and dance around the edge of digital and material seduction and consumption. The London based artist is being commissioned to develop more and more ambitious bodies of work with her first solo show in a publicly fun- ded gallery at Eastside Projects in the UK in May, with a simultaneous commission for Chiltern Railways from London to Birmingham. Scott’s works contain all the passages which follow the first contact of the consumer experience, from touch to mastication to assimilation and finally dispersal. The elements that constitute her work appear in a spontaneous configuration, slipping between infusions of nature and artificial imitation, antiquity and plasticity, synthetic import and organic craft class. The materiality of her imagery and her installations mish-mashes a trickled down Art History into an interior lan- guage of disposable nostalgia and melancholy. Scott’s worlds are constructed of acid, gels, soft drinks, toilet paper, takeaway containers, scented waxes, noodles, blinds, carpets, eye shadow and toothpaste, rallied together in a sophisticated chaos of making. Scott’s practice of processed chaos and refined, near animate, creation may ultimately be a vivacious, irrepressible questio- ning of our own contemporary pleasures.

    Some back ground info (source: The internet). Dennis Bryon and Blue Weaver first met in the mid sixties in a group called Brother John & The Witnesses. In 1966 Blue Weaver and Dennis Bryon joined a group from Cardif called Amen Corner. This septet, complete with saxes, was led by Andy Fairweather-Low, who at that time was only 16 years old. The group got a recording contract with Deram Records in 1966 and had many big hits during the next four years. These included "Gin House Blues," "Bend Me, Shape Me," and "High In The Sky" for Deram, after signing with Immediate Records they had further hits such as "(If Paradise Is) Half As Nice". During the four years of their existance they recorded three albums. After the end of Amen Corner, Andy Fairweather-Low founded a new, more progressive group, which he simply called Fairweather. The musicians of the new group were the same musicians that made up Amen Corner except for the horn section, which was missing. The first single release "Natural Sinner" was a big hit. After only one year the group broke up in 1971. After the failure of "Life In A Tin Can" the Bee Gees started to restructure the group and their sound. At first they found a new drummer. Dennis Bryon had previously played with Amen Corner and now joined the group. The next step for the Bee Gees was to find a new sound. Together with Atlantic producer Arif Mardin they worked on a modern form of rhythm'n'blues music. At first they added more rock'n'roll to their music.
