Poincar´ePrize 2015 Alexei Borodin I am very pleased and honored to give the laudatio for Alexei Borodin on his winning the Poincar´ePrize for 2015. Alexei was born and went to school in Donetsk in the Ukraine. In 1992 he was accepted into the famous \mech-mat" Department at Moscow State University, graduating in 1997. At Moscow State he began working with Grigori Olshanski in a marvelous collaboration that continues to this day. He received his PhD under Alexander Kirillov from the University of Pennsylvania in 2001. He was a professor at Caltech from 2003 to 2010, and since then he has been at MIT. I met Borodin about 15 years ago when he was a student at UPenn, and I have been following his career closely since then. His mathematical interests lie in the circle of ideas which connect the representation theory of \big" groups, combinatorics, integrable interacting particle systems and random matrix theory. When I met Borodin I was struck immediately by the freshness of his approach, combined with a professional maturity well beyond his years. He seemed to know and understand everything and I had to keep reminding myself that I was speaking to a young PhD student and not a seasoned colleague of many years standing. Borodin's mathematical and professional maturity was recognized with his very first academic appointment as a full Professor at Caltech in 2003. Following on earlier work of Kerov, Olshanski and Vershik, the key observation of Borodin and Olshanski in the representation theory of \big" groups, such as the infinite symmetric group and the infinite unitary group, is that the characters for the group are naturally associated with stochastic point processes. -

Press release 13 August 2014 Two Fields Medals 2014 awarded to ERC laureates The 2014 Fields Medals were awarded today to four outstanding mathematicians, of whom two are grantees of the European Research Council (ERC): Prof. Artur Avila (Brazil-France), an ERC Starting grant holder since 2010, and Prof. Martin Hairer (Austria) has been selected for funding under an ERC Consolidator grant in 2013. They received the prize respectively for their work on dynamical systems and probability, and on stochastic analysis. The other two laureates are Prof. Manjul Barghava (Canada-US) and Prof. Maryam Mirzakhani (Iran). The Medals were announced at the International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM) taking place from 13 – 21 August in Seoul, South Korea. On the occasion of the announcement, ERC President Prof. Jean-Pierre Bourguignon, a mathematician himself, said: “On behalf of the ERC Scientific Council, I would like to congratulate warmly all four Fields Medallists for their outstanding contributions to the field of mathematics. My special congratulations go to Artur Avila and Martin Hairer, who are both brilliant scientists supported by the ERC. We are happy to see that their remarkable talent in the endless frontiers of science has been recognised. The Fields Medals awarded today are also a sign that the ERC continues to identity and fund the most promising researchers across Europe; this is true not only in mathematics but in all scientific disciplines.” EU Commissioner for Research, Innovation and Science, Máire Geoghegan-Quinn, said: “I would like to congratulate the four laureates of the Fields Medal announced today. Department of Mathematics The Department of Mathematics seeks to maintain its top ranking in mathematics research and education in the United States. The department is a key part of MIT’s educational mission at both the undergraduate and graduate levels and produces the most sought-after young researchers. Key to the department’s success is recruitment of the best faculty members, postdoctoral associates, and graduate students in an ever more competitive environment. The department strives to be diverse at all levels in terms of race, gender, and ethnicity. It continues to serve the varied needs of its graduate students, undergraduate students majoring in mathematics, and the broader MIT community. Awards and Honors The faculty received numerous distinctions this year. Professor Victor Kac received the Leroy P. Steele Prize for Lifetime Achievement, for “groundbreaking contributions to Lie Theory and its applications to Mathematics and Mathematical Physics.” Larry Guth (together with Netz Katz of the California Institute of Technology) won the Clay Mathematics Institute Research Award. Tomasz Mrowka was elected as a member of the National Academy of Sciences and William Minicozzi was elected as a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Alexei Borodin received the 2015 Loève Prize in Probability, given by the University of California, Berkeley, in recognition of outstanding research in mathematical probability by a young researcher. Alan Edelman received the 2015 Babbage Award, given at the IEEE International Parallel and Distributed Processing Symposium, for exceptional contributions to the field of parallel processing. Bonnie Berger was elected vice president of the International Society for Computational Biology. -

Department of Mathematics The Department of Mathematics continues to be the top-ranked mathematics department in the United States. The department is a key part of MIT’s educational mission at both the undergraduate and graduate levels and produces top sought- after young researchers. Key to the department’s success is recruitment of the very best faculty, postdoctoral fellows, and graduate students in an ever-more competitive environment. The department aims to be diverse at all levels in terms of race, gender, and ethnicity. It continues to serve the varied needs of the department’s graduate students, mathematics majors, and the broader MIT community. Awards and Honors The faculty received numerous distinctions this year. Professor Emeritus Michael Artin was awarded the National Medal of Science. In 2016, President Barack Obama presented this honor to Artin for his outstanding contributions to mathematics. Two other emeritus professors also received distinctions: Professor Bertram Kostant was selected to receive the 2016 Wigner Medal, in recognition of “outstanding contributions to the understanding of physics through Group Theory.” Professor Alar Toomre was elected member of the American Philosophical Society. Among active faculty, Professor Larry Guth was awarded the New Horizons in Mathematics Prize for “ingenious and surprising solutions to long standing open problems in symplectic geometry, Riemannian geometry, harmonic analysis, and combinatorial geometry.” He also received a 2015 Teaching Prize for Graduate Education from the School of Science. Professor Alexei Borodin received the 2015 Henri Poincaré Prize, awarded every three years at the International Mathematical Physics Congress to recognize outstanding contributions in mathematical physics. He also received a 2016 Simons Fellowship in Mathematics. -

Overview This has been another excellent year for the Heilbronn Institute, which is now firmly established as a major national mathematical research centre. HIMR has developed a strong brand and is increasingly influential in the UK mathematics community. There is currently an outstanding cohort of Heilbronn Research Fellows doing first-rate research. Recruitment of new Fellows has been most encouraging, as is the fact that many distinguished academic mathematicians continue to work with the Institute. The research culture at HIMR is excellent. Members have expressed a high level of satisfaction. This is especially the case with the Fellows, many of whom have chosen to continue their relationships with the Institute. Our new Fellows come from leading mathematics departments and have excellent academic credentials. Those who left have moved to high-profile groups, including several to permanent academic positions. We currently have 29 Fellows, hosted by 6 universities. We are encouraged by the fact that of the 9 Fellows joining us this year, 5 are women. The achievements of our Fellows this year again range from winning prestigious prizes to publishing in the elite mathematical journals and organising major mathematical meetings. -
